.>unsub Reading
Danke :D
Oh I though it was group something
leave
ja
Where do I find the text?
it's pinned in this channel
Ah, thanks
durch/hinein dringen = to get through/into
ein Leck is a leak
z as hard z (tz)
Ist lange her (seitdem/dass wir uns das letzte mal gesehen haben.)
S is is z sound
natürlich mit ü
Stehen
also Weile, not veile
Wie schtehen
den Tod holen - to catch death
zurück, not zürück
to muster is also a thing btw
isn't that more in a military context?
yeah but it's used like that in German too ^^ just wanted to point out the similarity
Backen means Wangen here btw
die Backen (pl) - Cheeks
ziehen - to pull
der Besucher - visitor
es eilig haben - to be in a hurry
@flint cape you want to read?
Side note: why is er in that last sentence the door?
He is pulling the door
"Dann zog er die Tür hinter sich zu" (shortened sentence)
entkommen - to escape
I read it english first as a teen and it was odd then lol. Excited for the turns of phrase that were odd in English in a language I am worse at.
schicken - to send
schlüpfen - to slip in
wünschte mit ü
fortschwemmen - to wash away
Tür, not Tur
same with hoffe
Thank youuuuu
Thank you for coming everyone!
Apologies about my sick voice, makes it a bit hard to offer pronunciation, itll be better by next week 😄
Hey, sorry, what was the lesson about? I just joined in the #botchannel but I'm completely confused about the schedule
and this channel seems a bit hectic
Its a reading lesson
We take turns reading and translating a passage from a book
Oh, okay.
You can ask for assistance when a phrase is a but hard to decypher
Well, I could have taken a part and tried to read a bit.
Itll happen again at the same-ish time next week
Im making a poll to pick a better time
cool
okay guys pick that time for reading that suits you best (all times are Central European UTC+2):
8am saturday
12pm (midday) saturday
2pm saturday
11pm Saturday
11pm Friday
The votes are for this time by the looks of it 😄
Ill try to stick to it, but we sometimes have dinner late or have guests so ill do my best
Keen to have you there
<@&526087863339843585>
Hi everyone! Starting this coming weekend, I'm going to try to do a series of beginner grammar sessions, starting with the topics of noun gender and present tense verb conjugation. Anyone is welcome to join, but the content will be aimed at complete beginners. This week, the time will be Saturday 4pm GMT/UTC (6pm CEST) and it will run for 1-2 hours.
Also, if anyone is interested in helping run these sessions, check out my post in #community-discussion here: https://discordapp.com/channels/221708975698083841/676090288275587072/724931404261228565
will these lessons be recorded for all that cant make it cause of timezone differences?
No.
No, probably not. But I will most likely be using powerpoint slides and various other resources and I'll make sure to make them all available somewhere (I'll update on that after the first session).
How come?
it’s hardly plausible to shift the whole thing around for one person, presumably others will be busy on those other suggested days instead
you’d have to at least ask when’s best for a majority (among those times the lecturer has time)
I guess I'll just do a poll.
JX#2702 asks: Which day do you prefer for the beginner lesson? (You can vote for more than one)
1⃣: Friday (4pm UTC)
2⃣: Saturday (4pm UTC)
3⃣: Sunday (4pm UTC)
4⃣: Monday (4pm UTC)
<@&526087863339843585>
Literally anything other than Saturday afternoon
Given the general poll results I won't reschedule the lesson. I will hold it on Saturday as written in the original announcements.
what's your timezone jakey?
CET but I got a birthday party during the lesson time
I guess I'll manage with skipping one 😄
What's the lesson gonna be about? There's some areas I've covered alone
Ich wohne momentan in Kalifornien, das heißt es gibt ein neun Stunden unterschied zwischen mir und der Central Europe (UTC + 2) Zeit. Ich hatte mich darüber gefreut, dass am Samstag eine Lesegruppe stattfindet, allerdings kann ich ihr nicht anschließen. Vielleicht andere interessieren sich für eine ähnlich Gruppe, die entweder später am Tag geschehen oder um eine Uhr, die PST / EST Zeit passt.
@maiden abyss As mentioned in the announcement, it's noun gender and present tense verb conjugation.
Thanks, I've covered that myself actually using Schenke's but I'll definitely go through your resources you said you'll post.
👌
I've been going through Schenke's grammar, although in no specific order. I've done the Nominative case, haben/sie & present tense. I wanna do word order next since that's where I get confused with when answering practice questions
@wooden gale The lesson should be at around 9am PST and 12pm EST, which should be suitable for most people. Is there a specific reason why you feel this isn't suitable?
@Basementality, I was interested in attending the reading group that @BluhutrotBottletop posted. I'm mistaken then about the 9 hour difference at least, it's 7 hours instead? 9am PST would work well for me, but that's for the beginner lesson correct?
Yes, but you didn't really specify so I assumed you meant the last thing discussed.
Trotzdem das ist gute Nachrichten. Ich werde der Gruppe, der von @BluhutrotBottletop organisiert, anschließen. 7 Uhr morgens ist nicht so schlecht, mindestens besser als fünf.
danke
Bitte.
<@&526087868079144961>
Hey everyone, i know there's a lot of lessons happening right now so lets get this time into your diaries!
Time: 12pm (midday) Saturday: Central European time
what: reading Tintenherz: Cornelia Funke
where: in the lessons channel!
the pdf copy is pinned to this channel, so make sure youve got it downloaded and ready to go before Saturday
See you then!
Oh wow I thought it was rn, so late!
When I was your age I used to get up at 5. 😔
I have some plans so this will be the first thing I do lol
I like staying up late @tranquil escarp, I'm a night owl
There was a vote soz guys if the time is uncomfortable
Also 7am is doable! It nice getting up early!
Wake your brain up with German studies and chances are it won't be during something else for the early people lol
I wasn't alerted of any vote @delicate vortex
Unless I was and I just forgot the mention idk
ohh sorry Nussmeister, i didnt ping it, i posted it a bit after last weeks lesson as a regular message in lessons
it usually goes for about 2 hours, you could join for the second hour
@strange valve
im sorry, its hard finding good time for every timezone 😓
That is 6am for me and my sleep is not great right now, so I will not be joining.
that's 7 am for me, if it was 6 am I would be able to participate for 1 hour xD
Reminder: reading at 12pm
wie lange wird es dauert @delicate vortex?
Can you say how many hours from now?
^^
@delicate vortex
12pm is kind of useless in an international server. Could be CET, EST, or literally any other timezone
@astral bolt it's cet as according to the original announcement
For those who wanted hours from now, its 6 hrs from now
(I said 12 assuming that people read the original announcement)
@hollow narwhal Ich glaube, "wie viele Stunden bis dahin"
The time has come!
<@&526087868079144961>
“Reading Tintenherz now!”
Would you like me to stream? Or read from the pdf
(Note streaming kills my internet)
Unless someone else would also like to volunteer to stream?
Thats also great
Right now?
Yup
I am okay with pdf...
I'd be willing to volunteer to stream, should anyone desire it.
I don't have permission to even talk right now. ^^
is it ok if i didnt attend past sessions?
Correct.
@wary atlas is that as intended? everyone is server muted
restricted
aight
No it's because Syroe or whoever keeps disallowing talk perms in the lessons Channel so people don't use it out of lessons. Which then sucks when there's a lesson.
What about a bot command that creates a room for the lessons?
If Base is on PC he can switch it off but you'll all need to rejoin.
Yeah I did already switch it off.
Okay. It only applies to people after they rejoin the chan so do that real quick.
is it a bot command? cause if not session holders at the very least, than helpers
No it's just normal Discord perms right now.
Audio crashed, one second.
Technically that's called >group start and is usable by session holders. It makes a text chan and VC that can then be yeeted out when the session ends. But the downside is that only people who are in the group can see it.
There, fixed.
And Casca I'll give you session holder temporarily so you can stream the pdf.
Thanks. 💙
please excuse my cat if you hear her
how easy would it be to have a quick command that toggles the people can join vc setting that way it remains visible but just with the padlock? like what was up with the mod vc the other day
Very.
spöttisch
herablassend
verlegen
Want to write it, SUNSET? 😏
Schälchen
Though the mod VC thing was just a consequence of me being incompetent af.
if i knew anything about bot coding maybe but i don't
If it's Kotlin, then I'm out.
other feature thoughts (no rush on this at all or even a request to do it. just ideas to consider lmao because i can't/won't do it myself). if the bot can listen for vc channel joins have the bot dm them with a bit of info about what's happening (could possibly be integrated with the planned lessons schedule feature??)
it is indeed kotlin
also i'm pretty sure the only ones with that kind of access to the bot are mods
would i be allowed to use a german -> english dictionary as i translate once its my turn?
sparingly, it would be nice to ask the other participants for help when your stuck
What's wrong with Kotlin. 😤
Nothing, I just don't know it.
Everyone should. 😌
nicken nod
@heady whale You're doing just fine. 💙
Plural: die Besucher -> the visitors -> seine/ihre Besucher
Singular: der Besucher -> the visitor -> seinen/ihren Besucher
isn't this the als ob with the ob emitted so it should take the konjunktiv 2, therefore hätte?
Yes, that's correct. You can include the ob as follows:
Als ob er es plötzlich eilich hätte.
thanks!
Wow Google played me
are you using google translator?
breit -> wide/spread out.
bereit -> ready.
does that mean a suspicion in her grew
id say so
Yes.
👍
@storm turret no I googled the time conversions and it told me 7am.
An idea, sticky from fear, spread in her heart: that with this stranger, whose name sounded so foreign and yet familiar, something threatening had slipped into her world.
the severity of her wish was what scared her, right?
Staub -> dust
Finger -> finger
Staubfinger -> Dustfinger
yeah
And she wished, with such severity that it scared her, that she had never gotten Mo and that Dustfinger had stayed outside, until the rain had swept him [Dustfinger] away.
spreizte is the third person singular past participle form of (zu) spreizen.
der Schreck -> the shock (fear).
As the door to the workshop opened once more, she recoiled in fear.
"So you're still standing here", said Mo. "Go to bed, Meggie. Off you go."
He had this little wrinkle above his nose, one that only appeared when something truly worried him, and looked completely through her [Meggie], as if he were somewhere else entirely with his thoughts. The idea in Meggies heart grew and spread black wings.
really hecking difficult a2 then lol
just a lot of googling a2
ill prolly go back and like... write out a full translation on my own time sometime later
That's a good idea. If you want me to look over your translation, let me know.
You're doing a wonderful job, by the way.
so should i type it out instead of cursive then?
You can do as you please.
oof
if someone else is looking at it, ill type it out, i dont mind either way really. my cursive sucks
ha eavesdropping with two ears on a wall near impossible true
yes
You could stand in a corner and really try. ^^
Though I suppose those would be different walls.
chainsaws exist for a reason

@storm turret I'm innocent you spaghetti noodle
die Lunge -> the lung
die Entzündung -> the infection
We do also have die Pneumonie as a direct translation.
@boreal zealot
Nachdem er die Tür zugezogen hatte, wartete sie vorsichtshalber noch ein paar Sekunden, auch wenn es ihr schwer fiel. Dann schlich sie wieder hinaus auf den Flur.
hin -> away from the speaker
her -> towards the speaker
ein -> towards the inside
aus -> towards the outside
once its my turn again im prolly gonna head to bed after i read/translate since id like to sleep before sunrise today
could we split into two groups?
That's probably a good idea, Doodle.
all i hear is robot
two groups would be great!
Indirectly, yes.
It's a portmanteau for sharp limbed.
It's a metaphor/portmanteau Funke came up with herself. It is not nor ever has been standard German.
You will not find it in any dictionary.
3rd page of notes already
Nice! ^^
Then as she had to climb, to decipher the sign, she thought, that the chewing really meant, she asked herself with revulsion, why Mo of all things hung Büchshänders on his door.
is this roughly what that Damals, als sie noch ... hatte sentence meant
From what I remember:
Back then she had to climb onto boxes to be able to decipher the sign. She took the words literally (that is, she assumed the books were really being eaten) and wondered why her father would hang the words of a "book violator" on his door.
book desecrator!
I prefer your suggestions. ^^
Defiler would be the best, in my opinion.
_schänder is also used to refer to other forms of defiling.
her heart contracted, hearing her fathers tired voice
ahh makes sense
One minute, I'm getting some water for my dry throat. ^^
@boreal zealot would you like to read?
Maybe?
ei- ai
ie- ee
Diphthongs
Ich Anfänger
That's okay, take it at a pace you're comfortable with.
inzwischen- in the meantime
Not quite: inzwischen, to me, implies a change: since recently or meanwhile.
who says inzwischen komme ich immer zurecht
i thought it could also mean meanwhile/by now
wow lifehack with bluhu
@rich grotto The German Z has a TS pronunciation.
Words that end in soft letters are often given a hard pronunciation: halb, Rad.
If the soft letter is in the middle of the word, the pronunciation is soft: halbieren, radeln.
English: after the hour.
German: before the hour.
Halb zwei would be half (past) one.
@delicate vortex i always say quilt but i know people who say doona
sun join me in the doona club
all of them aussie
@wary atlas What do you say? ^^
For the bed covers/blanket you can hide under.
Then Dustfinger's steps distanced themselves slowly and with delay, as if he hesitated going forth.
do we only read for an hour?
thank you soooo much for the reading session I enjoyed it loads
ty
We read from ~12:20 to 14:20.
Danke sehr 🙏
thank u all for holding this!
@compact hemlock Doona.
whoooo doona club
take care y'all!
Yeah it was really good. I have basically forgotton how to speak, so its been really helpful!
Thanks!
@compact hemlock shit where did we stop lol
can you ping doodle with the pages again :3
we were like near the bottom of 18
I plan to once I can open the PDF again. ^^
x)
14-18
@heady whale ^
like all of 14 to most of 18, but feel free to only translate part of it, theres many words there
Doodle: We stopped above the last two paragraphs on page 18.
Thanks for the nice reading again @compact hemlock @delicate vortex 😄
Hello! In German grammar, what are called the words "darauf, daran, dazu, darunter...."?
*How are called
What is right 😅
Prepositions: Präpositionen.
auf, an, zu etc are prepositions
but the da-compounds are also adverbs
Vielen Dank!
Was this the grammar session ?
nope that's later
Ah thanks
<@&526087863339843585>
The beginner grammar lesson begins in 5 minutes in Lessons VC!
upps Base is doing his thing X( I'll have to wait until after lol
everyone who joins, have fun with basechen!!!
Sers Flappo
That's really sweet of him. Are you having a great time? 💙
YES
it's hard
but it really fun
sometimes we should play 2 together hehehe
tried 1 only today doe
oopsie sowwyyy
are spoons mass nouns?
der Löffel - the spoon
die Löffel - the spoons
the noun doesn't change in the plural at all
No, it's just a noun with a zero-plural
essen
trinken
base's table is missing zero-plurals then 🤔
sie essen fisch aber ich esse fisch nicht
@storm turret well they do exist, you just have to memorize them
Du isst der Apfel, und ich trinke die Milch
den Apfel
or course they exist which is why i pointed it out
Warum?
That will be covered in a coming lesson but is due to a thing called noun cases.
^
you are doing something to the apple (eating it) so it has to be in the accusative case
Oki
That's why Base asked for not using an object I suppose :p
probably
is the grammar lesson over?
He gave a task before going
You may wanna try that:
essen
trinken
Simple sentence out of this
preferably without object
an example like löffel where it has a plural but the plural is the same as the singular
without an object?
If you manage, yes ^^
tfw i can't read lmao
lernen
üben
practicing ?
Ich muss mehr üben machen.
Bulli lernt / übt
is that correct
Ich bin hier um mein Deutsch zu üben.
faq keyboard
Being able to type German letters is quite important!
- Schon = already. Schön = beautiful.
- Mutter = mother. Mütter = mothers.
How to? There are several options.
🔸 US International layout: if you're using a US keyboard or a keyboard based on it, the transition is very easy! Everything stays as you know it, except for some symbol keys like ~, ` or ", which can be pressed to add accents. For example " + a = ä. You can also do RightAlt + s = ß.
To use US International on Windows, look for the Region & Language options and switch your selected keyboard layout to US International.
🔸 Use a program like AutoHotkey to automatically type the symbols you need when you type certain shortcuts: https://www.autohotkey.com/
🔸 Alternatively, you can memorise the altcodes for German characters. Learning them is easier than you might think! Simply hold Alt and type the numbers on your numpad:
ä = 132; Ä = 142
ö = 148; Ö = 153
ü = 129; Ü = 154
ß = 225
🔸 If all else fails, you can use ASCII conventions for the characters: add an e to other vowels, and write ss or sz for ß. For example:
ae = ä
oe = ö
ue = ü
ss = ß
But this is discouraged since it's harder to read and... looks ugly. It is only done in situations where alternatives are impossible (fonts with no unicode etc).

All the future content will be available in the Google folder I posted earlier, which I'll pin now.

Folder containing all beginner lesson content (I'll add to it each week): https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/14MPdMqPTH9XVocvy__Hw7cMz5jSXZux-
I have a bit of a broader question to some learners here. Are there a lot of people around that join a lesson only to listen, but not actively participate? I remember this being the case in the past, not sure how the current situation is in that regard Ö
Maybe I'm still learning who knows
Haha
It's just because it's stuff I already know
And it's easier to drive and text than talk
Maybe the question is worded weirdly, but it's not meant to bash or shame lmao, I'm just curious if people like to use the lessons as a sort of "listening comprehension"
I don't want to be distracted
Although that's probably useful
Manchmal schaue ich ein paar Video und kann nicht so leicht verstehen was ich gehört habe
I would have the same question
I onced joined a vc of at least 20 people and all the mics were voluntarily muted.
i'm there to see how things are run for the purpose of backup if/when base has irl stuff but it's also 3 in the morning so my brain has been pretty dead
I'm just trying to see if there's even an appeal in that direction from users here, cuz that would be a format that doesn't require much preparation probably
but so far it's only you Trax
I'm here for similar purposes as sun
Same
i'd say there were around 8-14 people who were there specifically to learn (it's hard to keep track out of those who joined and left throughout)
on this server too A0 day 0 is an uncommon niche. i think most of the people who go seeking out a german discord already have had some encounters with the language, even if that's a few hours on duolingo.
however with that and timezones in mind a ~10ish target learners turnout is quite good imo
I think technique lessons are valuable. Or maybe a q and a about how x person got to c or b or better at listening
But theres also plenty of YouTubers explaining that too so 🤷♂️
Maybe just do an activity nop and try it out and see if there is an interest
A q and a may be interesting, but it is also kind of personal, as people's lives are very different. What works for one person may not work for others.
That being said, if some b-c levels wanted to write a paragraph or two about their experiences in German learning, I think it could benefit some people. Even writing about their difficulties, what worked, what didn't, etc.
took a nap and missed this session, lol
Np it will be once per week. Check the pin for the content we covered.
Do you guys still do lessons?
is there a thread i can read that will give me infromation?
reading the last few messages in this chat will answer your first question
faq lessons
Lessons
The lessons held on the server don’t have a consistent schedule, because we allow lesson hosts to choose their own times and days. Lessons are held in the Lessons voice channel along with the #lessons text channel. Everyone is welcome to listen to the lessons even if they don’t wish to participate.
You can subscribe to a specific group to get pings whenever a session is announced. The current lesson groups are:
- Reading: Read and translate German texts together.
- AdvancedReading: Like Reading but aimed at B2+ speakers.
- Grammar: Lesson about a specific grammar topic.
- Activities: Speaking practice, learning games, or things that don’t fit in the other categories.
Subscribe by typing >sub Reading (for example) in #botchannel.
Lesson Hosting
Lesson hosting is a voluntary role and we welcome any members who are interested to host their own sessions. If you’re interested in running a session, feel free to DM one of the moderators to discuss the process.
Even if you feel inexperienced or have no idea what to run a session about, we’re always happy to provide guidance and teach people how they can hold learning sessions.
I'm still playing with an idea in my head, how helpful would a sort of listening comprehension be?
A lot of people are interested in that.
Although the channel for discussing/planning types of lessons and so on is generally #community-discussion just for future reference.
upps x) Sorry Baserino ❤️
<@&526087863339843585>
This coming Saturday at 4pm UTC/GMT (6pm Germany time) - same time as last weekend - we're going to have our second beginner German session! Everyone is welcome, but the sessions are aimed at absolute beginners. This week we'll be learning about indefinite articles, accusative case and how to construct basic sentences and questions.
I've also added a homework sheet based on last week's lesson in #study-tasks and I plan to post more in future weeks. I encourage everyone to complete these for your own learning, but we won't be covering them during the actual lessons. If you need help completing them, please ask in #questions or #beginner-german as usual.
@Grammar
luckily, you can’t just do that. why did you want to ping a largeish group of people @sand spruce?
Sorry, just thought that was the way to subscribe for the classes. Just did the sub grammar in bot channel.
ah fair. yea @ is used to notify people who have that role
<@&526087868079144961>
Hello everyone!
this week we'll be reading some famous German fairytales (Märchen).
when: Saturday 1pm CET
where: the the Lessons channel
for reference, this is an hour later than last week, and is at 11am UTC/GMT
don’t refer to it as GMT but as UTC. GMT is confusing because that’s an actual time zone (british winter time)
(is a pet peeve of mine)
you must hate this site then
https://greenwichmeantime.com/
Hmh I don't quite understand what different it makes
utc is a standard against which all timezones are defined. gmt is one such time zone, namely british winter time, situated at UTC+0
in my experience, people often read “gmt” as “british time”, which is wrong half the year
That's true, however, while incorrect, GMT+X does still give you the correct UTC timezone. As such, it's not that bad, in my opinion.
Idk how it is in other countries, but for us, GMT is usually the standard time used with offsets, or at least, the one that people are normally familiar with and prefer to use.
Like I basically only ever see UTC used on time websites. I rarely see people actually using it to express their own time zone.
^
And usually (in my experience) people don't confuse GMT as British time. They rather conceptualize it as "British time happens to be at GMT+0" or something like that.
Personally though I usually just list UTC/GMT whenever I mention it so that people who use one or the other both benefit.
And usually (in my experience) people don't confuse GMT as British time. They rather conceptualize it as "British time happens to be at GMT+0" or something like that.
@wary atlas Definitely.
Honestly i didnt know there was a difference
My life is just +10ish and i find converting very difficult 😄
What are good keywords to learn for arguments in German?
Like a small debate or just to give your opinion on something?
Hope is fine asking here cuz i am not sure the question is that easy to answer, but wanna learn how to argument well
@grizzled badge It's better to ask in #questions or #questions-2 as #lessons is for special hosted lessons that are held in VCs at scheduled times.
Ah ok sorry
also, stop trying to argue with people. Be nice.
Will there be a beginner's class tomorrow again like last week?
Yes, same time. @fiery edge
But not sure what the time will be next weekend, just as a heads up.
Thats cool. Really appreciate the effort @wary atlas .
No problem. Hope you enjoy!
@delicate vortex Hast du dir schon ein Märchen ausgesucht? 😛
Einige, ich hab sie aufgelistet, ich dachte aber es wäre schön wenn die gruppe selbst wählen könnte
Zwei kurze Geschichten oder eine Lange würde genügen schätze ich 😄
*aufgelistet.

I have a selection of fairytales around :^)
So it's really up to everyone else which story exactly
so 2pm then?
I only see one response so far so I guess it'll be postponed?
looks like so is the case
@delicate vortex small heads up, there's also a >session reschedule command so you can update the time shown in the embed
Thanks sunset! I was excited to read some Tintenherz and forgot that we were reading Märchen this week
Thanks Syro
Depending on how many people attend we'll have to split groups anyway, so maybe we can do one group with fairytales and the other does Tintenherz again Enzyme. But we'll have to wait and see ^.^
Does reading mean you listen to people read or people read in VC in turns?
people read aloud in turns, and translate what they've read
ohh
Sorry for the delay, starting at 2pm CET
Is this lesson taking plc in 15 mins or?
Yup in 15 mins
Cool - my first time so pls bear with me.

ctrl+f to find it easyer people
Der Mann
sprach: "Künftigen Sonntag ist die Taufe, da stelle
dich zu rechter Zeit ein." Der Tod erschien, wie er
versprochen hatte, und stand ganz ordentlich Gevatter.

alle Hilfe sei umsonst und kein Arzt in der Welt könne
ihn retten.

okay! thanks for joining!
why is daß and muß written with ß here?
okay moai tschüss!
@fossil panther Tschüss!
ach was unsinn du schaffst es doch!
bis nächstes mal, hoffentlich
@bold hollow Oh.. Thank you.
||When he went to the bed, Death stood at the feet of the ill person, and he knew he couldn't help||
dem Bette, ist das ein Beispiel von diesem alten -e an Ende von Dativen Wörter (wie Zuhause)
||"I wish I could outwit Death" he thought||
why is it "fasste" instead of "faßte"? i thought the ß always replaced "ss" everywhere
this is german before the spelling reform, its quite random when it comes to ß and ss
in modern german ß is used for long vowel sounds like in, schließen and ss is used for short vowel sounds like in dass
ok, thanks
a good example of how this works is the verb essen @sand ledge
in the present you have ich esse, er isst etc all with short vowels and ⟨ss⟩
but in the past you have sie aß with an ⟨ß⟩ following a long a
Ass also exists, meaning “ace” (the playing card) and that has a short a
wo sind wir stehengeblieben? 😅
"Er hätte sich der Warnung"
ok danke
widerstehen =/= wieder stehen
yes got it

thanks ,me too
Thanks!
Thanks 😄
It was great
Thank you!
See you
I think you should add a target level to the description
(B1 maybe even B2)
because of the old language
Fairytales I believe is a bit of an experiment since it was very popular a while ago, otherwise there's still Inkheart to read which should be a bit more accessible
Yeah this text was a lot harder than i expected
I should have read it beforehand and gauged it better XD
It's a nice story, but mebbe it was a bit too hard for A x(

Hey guys, just letting you know the lesson might start 5-10 minutes late. (Feel free to show up at the start time, but just in case I'm slightly late)
You gonna say here when it starts?
Yep, it's starting now.
oki
Yes, now I can see it. It was paused for a second.
Is the screen loading for anyone else

Yeah we can see it
yes
Ja
Hallo, Ich heiße Laura
Hallo, Ich heiße Laura
Hallo, ich heisse Laura
sorry, had to go quickly. are we supposed to answer these?
translate
Ich habe ein Hund
Ich habe einen Hund?
Ich habe einen hund
Ich habe ein Hund
Ich habe ein Hund
ich habe einen Hund
so is Ich habe einen Hund correct?
oh okay i was scared i was the only one making mistakes
Den Hund ist klein.
Der Hund ist klein.
Der Hund ist klein?
Der Hund ist klein
Der Hund ist klein
oh,
Der Hund ist klein.
Er ist einen braun Hund
Er ist einen braun Hund
Er ist ein brauner Hund?

Er ist einen braun Hund
er ist ein brauner Hund
Oh, Ich bin ein Doof
Ich liebe kleinen Hund
Ich leibe kleinen Hund
Ich liebe kleine Hunde
Ich liebe klein Hunde.
Oh ok ok! Thank you. Got it.
Did I miss something, or did you teach how to change adjectives according to case?
kleine > kleine
braun > brauner
oh wheres the chart

Grammatik ist schwer für mich 😦
sorry for the intrusion , but how do you type German letters? i searched on net and there is like alt+0223 on numpad for a letter ß . do you do it every time you use a German letter.
@fiery edge you set your keyboard to German, it's easier like that
Using Shift + Colon will give Ö
try >ex keyboard in #botchannel
@fiery edge hold down the "s" key and the options will appear
Hey, will we do the other example sentences?
füttern
Ich /füttere/Hunde jeden Tag?
Ich futtere den Hund jeden Tag
tbh, ich habe das Erlernen von mehr als nur Deklinationen und Konjugationen verzögert... ich habe einfach das meiste vom Lesen (und einige Bücher) gelernt... Sollte ich versuchen, bestimmte Grammatik zu lernen?
Ich fütte den Hund jeden Tag
(sorry if this is a bit of an odd field, was responding to a question a few mins ago)
Ich füttere den Hund jeden Tag?
*füttere
oh okay i thought its i feed dogs
What if it's a girl dog?
den Hund (one specific dog)
Hunde (general concept)
can you write that
Oh, ok. Danke!
yeah i was interested in that
die Katze = cat
der Kater = male cat / tomcat
die Katze
There's also Hündin if you really wanna stress that it's a female dog
oh okay
This concept of a general world and a gender specific noun is easy to understand if you native language uses it
Did not attend the first class and I am still confused how you are saying if a sentence is Accusative or nominative, Any specific links available for that?
Danke!
Er isst gerade das Essen
should we try the last example?
Er frisst das Futter jetzt sofort. i think its not correct
das Futter
fressen
Jetzt frisst er den Futter?
Er isst jetzt das Essen?
Er frisst das futter gerade jetzt
Er isst das futter jetzt sofort
Das Futter*
Er frisst das Futter jetzt sofort?
Er ist das Futter am fressen don't use
is gerade a verb
@cobalt forum y not ?
i think its adverb
hey Directing whats the correct way of saying "he is eating the food right now."
gerade is an adverb
@tawny slate for now it's still dialect, not standard
i think so yes
why not record the session and upload it on yt so ppl can go through
hey @wary atlas you screen is still on example sents. for me
When should we use mogen and liebe? Both mean "like"
Könnte ich eine Katze haben?
did his screen change for u guys
yes
yup
Sehr gut
Okay!
Is it weird to say you love someone if they are not your girlfriend or something?
Ich mag kaffee , kaffee mag mich nicht
dunno if it was mentioned in vc but 'ich hab dich lieb' is the go to 'i love you as a friend' love
Ich mag Kaffee nicht?
@storm turret "Ich hab dich lieb" So that's how you friend zone someone in German xD
So, uh we learn modal verbs by heart?
Maybe I should make a modal verbs + sein/haben cheat sheet then.
theres not many modal verbs tbh
I'm confused about what you mean by verbs being sein?
sechs?
Ohhh
Sein=To be. Right?
Yeah
@pallid vessel yep
sein is pretty much used when verbs have movement, change of state right?
ich bin and ihr seid are the only sein verbs?
ah, okay! Got it
sein is the infinitive form
Ich will eine Katze füttern
jetzt is more now and not really today
Ich lerne Deutsch Heute
jetzt lerne ich deutch
Deutsch* Jetzt*
Sorry if I got this wrong but
If there's two verbs, we choose one to put at the 2nd place and the rest goes at the end in infinitive?
So, If there are many verbs in a sentence, can we say that only the first verb needs to be conjugated and not the others?
Okay!
Ich will die Kaffeetasse trinken.
?
Ich liebe, Deutsch zu lernen?
or wait is liebe a modal
no it's not
what does versuche mean
Significance of "Zu"? Just to say it's not a modal verb?
"I try to learn German" vs "I try German learn"
die Kaffetasse: the cup for coffee, you can't drink the cup
oh i thought its like a cop of coffee
Ich will eine Tasse Kaffee trinken
Like fillers!
oh okay
Hast du Coronavirus?
das Coronavirus maybe?
yes/no question
Wait, does the "zu" rule apply to questions as well?
Woher liebe, Deutsch zu lernen?
You can use it, but it specifically asks about the heritage, not necessarily where you live/etc.

Ich liebe es, Deutsch zu lernen.
oh ok
Ich lerne gerne Deutsch.
ooh okay that makes sense
Ich nehme gerne Katzen
So how'd you say "Why do you like learning German?"
Warum lernst du gerne Deustch?
what if we have two verbs and the separable one is conjugated
einkaufen?
Ich mochte mich beim Deutschlernen vorstellen
Ich habe vor, Deutsch zu lernen. (vorhaben)
oh okay it makes sense
Are there many separable verbs for this to be something to worry about

It's remembering them all
this may be a bit out of context
but howd' you go with having a verb + 2 separable verbs?
Are you going to fall asleep when you come back?
Werden Sie einschlafen wenn Sie zurueckkomen?
oh ok
separable verbs are quite common Skii so it's good to know how they work
lol
dont they have a distinct ending/ prefix
Because german is lots of words put togetherrr
they do have distinct prefixes
^^^
i remember an
an vor ein and whatnot
but ye Skii, they are important to know 😛 Especially since the prefix may change the entire meaning
do you mean like vorlesen?
deutsche sprache, schwer sprache
no?
D: 😄
Uhm im not sure I remember it sounding that way
vorlestigen, never heard of that^^
Is this lesson only for separable verbs?
Tell us something about andjective endings
yeah the most important thing about all these rules is to reinforce them
