fake dynamic bones on quest
Its a little iffy, but it works. Its a blendtree animating the hair with the AngularY float.
It seems AngularY is very fps dependent, and will average higher with lower fps.
Probably will do the same with the tail, dress, and bell.
The avatar is rated Good on Quest so I don't feel bad with the extra bones.

maybe the bones could be removed and the different orientations can be turned into blendshapes? would probably be a pain lol
It wouldn't be that hard, but I want to also have VelocityXYZ move the bones as well by adding on top of the existing animation. I feel that would be a bit harder to do with shapekeys.
The avatar only has 85 bones anyways, so I don't think it will be affecting performance all that much.

i can definitely see this approach even having benefit for PC avatars, at least until the official vrchat replacement for dynamic bones comes around
I doubt many pc users would prefer fake hair dynamics that is driven by a janky float. It doesn't have any inertia either so it feels a bit stiff.
But I heard Genshin baked its dynamics into the characters animation for mobile, so thats what inspired me to do something similar in vrc.

This is my remesh and retexture of Alex Mercer from the Prototype Series. This is trying to mimic how Alex Mercer looked in the beginning cutscene of Prototype 1 (check it out its really cool if you like edge and gore) Its not 100%, but it looks SO much better then the orginal Prototype 1 abilities and unlike in the second game where he has James Hellers powers as a playable skin, this guy will have powers that model what they were supposed to look like on Alex from the first game

Showing off the fake hair dynamics again.
I've added VelocityXZ to go along side AngularY and made them blend between each other.
AngularY is used while standing still, and VelocityXZ is used while moving.
Most likely, any Quest avatar I make from now on will utilize these fake "dynamic bones" in one way or another.
I'll also probably go through and make the animations slightly move so they feel more dynamic when moving at a constant speed.

This is a Upload test, still got a lot of texturing on the transformations to do but I think its looking good so far. Its not yet public but it will be.

It would honestly be really cool if someone managed to make a script that took actual dynamic bones in editor, moved the avatar in certain ways, and logged the bones transform values to "bake" into the needed animations.
Maybe its just a little dream atm, but it would be really cool.

They have a lot of mocap-esque plugins for Unity. All you'd need to do is delete any excess frames and properties.
When avi dynamics comes out, hopefully it has enough Quest support that you could do this a lot more easily and believably.
Like object on head animates based on distance from locally bound object or something.
If avatar dynamics are added to quest, there's a chance that physics bones will also be added.
Which if that happens, theres very little reason to make animated fake dynamics.

This is my first avatar and i plan on making more for the public
curious what you figure out there. I tried limiting rotation (in the muscles & settings tab) once and it resulted in wonky stuff
seems like the IK drives the mecanim rig and changing the muscles causes the retargeting to kick in, but the IK assumes default settings when trying to get 1:1 movement
This is my Alex Mercer Remaster Project so far. It will be a public avatar available at the UU Home world under Blackguard. If you would like, there is currently a Alpha version that was uploaded to test abilites. This updated model with override that model, which will be recycled into the quest version of the model.
Finished up animations for IXA (for any Tokyo ghoul fans, I know kaneki never uses IXA but I think it fits the black reaper title)
For full control over IK, you'd need a dummy rig.

I've released a package for av3 that I'm calling the 'Animation Localizer'. This might be a little bit niche, but it allows you to drop a circle in the world that defines an area that each player must stand in, in order to see/hear an animation or trigger any other effect you want. You can have an entire world-scale animation playing just feet away from your friends without bothering them, while you show it to some other friends who are standing inside the circle with you. Any player can exit/enter the circle at any time without interrupting the progress of the animation. It doesn't necessarily have to be 'visible' and 'invisible', you can use the circle to trigger anything you want.
Features:
- Preview where the circle will be placed before it becomes visible to other players. A countdown begins when you lock it in, during which players can see that they must enter the circle
- Adjust the size or position of the circle at any time
- Switch between various animations/toggles/etc without having to re-do the circle placement
- Customize various aspects like countdown length, min/max circle size, etc with the included instructions

how does that work? shader?
Its a mix of shaders, constraints, dynamic bones and a trick using unity's wierd scaling behaviour in parent chains.
The actual liquid is a shader.
The height/fill level is determined by moving an object with an animation.
maintaining the liquid direction is done using constraints.
maintaining the liquid's volume in the containers is done using the scale trick surrounding the constraints
and the wobbling is done with a aim constraint and a dynamic bone.
unity straight up made the fingers look like they were smashed into a brick
but hot damn the material work on this paid off

Brex's Magic Box - drop a box in world space that appears to have different contents from every side! Also includes the ability to trigger different audio/effects/animations locally for each player as they move to the different positions, including the inside of the box. Three different themes included, as well as a light version where the front and back appear the same, and the left and right appear the same (if you're trying to keep things a little more optimized.) @junior grail A simple mask can be added via unity, but certain accessories like clothing must be in blender, it has to be custom fit. It's eassyy peasey though.

also i really recommend finding a skin texture off booth or something, the default vroid skin texture looks doodoo and having a nice skin/face texture can make the model look SO MUCH better. and have fun making your character, i find making them and creating the outfits/hair to be really fun!

Standard has it's pros, too smol file size, too simple, but not cartoony(anime-like) options at all, so I chose Poiyomi one. x)
I generally prefer more realistic shading on most of my avatars, so that's actually a pro for me lol.

you would do that in blender before you export the Avatar as now you're just making yourself 20 times more expensive

as there is nothing literally helpful to be done in unity with it in that state

or do your changes on the version that's not broken into many pieces

Sneak peek at my purple asparagus themed orca-roo. I made her fancy since (I think) purple asparagus is more expensive than regular green asparagus! Earrings, brow rings, nose rings, bracelets, choker, and rings in rose gold and gold with emerald, ruby, and amethyst stones. The piercings were a pain, but I like how she looks. May add tail, toe, and ankle jewelry later as it's late and I wanna play VRChat as her. Who knows if I'll pierce the fins, though.

I made probably the most hard update I've ever made to Xariel.
Xariel is an original character, he is essentially my magnum opus.
Low-poly is something I love, as my #1 favorite thing is optimization.
Xariel(originally 13,704 polygons) has been reduced to 1,978 polygons and also looks more defined with better UVs.
The avatar, video, and some other information is on my booth page, this avatar also isn't free like my other ones.
Also, the avatar does have eyebrow animations, but the master file isn't one mesh like the avatar is, so you won't see it in the video.

it takes a ton of work to make a good looking model from scratch. there is a reason why most models are not free.
but you are more than welcome to try to make your own, you could probably even sell it if it turns out well
You can find some good free models, but they are few and far between. And a bunch of them are locked behind Discord servers (which isn't usually a problem, you can just join, download, then leave).
also probably cost you a lot more time you make it from scratch then however long it takes for you to make $22 out your job

My very complicated yet optimized solution to having blinking and visemes on a fallback avatar with no shape keys.
How am I gonna have a shape key that changes textures
Move a mesh in front that has a different texture ?
kinda how 2D visemes have been made since the beginning 
But that adds unnecessary tris and from a distance can Z fight
This method makes it so the model doesn't have to be modified at all and makes sure I'm not using extra material slots
sure, it's a few tris, but true about z fighting, especially on quest
Would be worth making a video tutorial on how people can do that !
Originally I did it with animations that updated the material every few frames
But then they wouldn't overlap naturally
So instead I made 4 materials with 1 frame animations that are tied to a timer in 2 layers dedicated to timing parameters on and off
Here's hoping Facebook fixes their shit soon and I can actually test the avatar in VR 😔

I think it's because the whole thing is actually angling down into the ground. I've been trying to correct it. It's a mangled Unity Paricle as the base, I made the meshes and textures (except the ground one)
