Hey guys I need some help
I’ve got my avatar on quest, but I can’t seem to figure out how to upload it to pc as well. The build button says “ build and publish for unsupported” and when I click it everything looks like it uploaded for pc. But it still hasn’t

to upload something for quest, change the build target to android and then upload on the same avatar

Hello. Is there any actual post or something that explains why ''Write Defaults should be off, or on if you must, but never mixed.''
All I can find is others saying, do this or that, without explaining the reason exactly. ''It can break'' isn't really a valid argument, because what break, and what if I mix write defaults and nothing breaks?
For commissions you may wanna look at the vrc traders server in #community-servers-old. As they are way more setup for that kinda stuff.
Write defaults on sets the value to the first frame of the animation when it exits. For anything more complicated than a toggle, this can cause set problems if you mix them. Also can cause animator lock up. Where some layers just don't work at all because of the mix.
So it's best to just not use write defaults.
So if I get none of these problems, and mixing (on for toggles/gestures, off for scaling/posechanger) doesn't break anything. I can just ignore the saying and tutorials telling me to do extra work, like turn off Write Defaults and create a reset layers and such, because it just works already?
If it works, good. But it could also randomly break after an vrc update.
It's like the idea of, no ones forcing you to brush your teeth, but it's a good idea to do so.

Anything* is quest compatible if you try hard enough.
Try to use VRCQuestLabs or whatever it's called. It promise a 1 button click to generate quest compatability. If that fails, fix is easy. Just change all shaders to vrchat mobile toon lit, and hit all the auto fix buttons in the SDK. If too large, use crunch compression on al ltextures.

there is 3 ways to share avatars with people:
Having an avatar uploaded to you're account and make it public, have cloning on.
Make a world and and attach your public avatar's blueprint id to a pedestal.
(making an avatar for someone else) Export a unity package file with the avatar in it.

It is a video series that, at least starting out, focuses on making the mesh itself. The primary goal is creating avatars for use by Vtubers, though VRChat is mentioned as a potential use case. I don’t think it covers VRChat specific things, like working with the .fbx in unity.

No you can just use physbones and do it yourself.
Iirc avatars don’t need to have physbones or dynamic bones to function, though they are super useful for dynamic stuff like hair that reacts to things like movement.

the auto atlas tool in CATS is pretty ass, leaves ton of wasted UV space
use the Bake tool in CATS instead
properly re-packs the UV's, and bakes every PBR material down to 1

Not really since by default everyone's game is set to convert the Dynamic Bone scripts to Physbones, and it's not always very accurate.

no. physbones are way more performant. quest avatars weren't even able to use dynamic bones before the physbone update

You must obtain at least "New User" Trust Rank in our Trust and Safety system in order to upload content. You can get this by just spending a few hours in VRChat, hop some worlds, and make some friends. Give it some time and you'll be able to upload content in no time.
As an aside, you must have a VRChat account to upload content. That means you can't use a Steam account, Oculus account, or Viveport account to upload content like worlds or avatars.

It's some combination of friends, worlds visited, and playtime (no hard info). Most of the time, actively playing in public worlds, for that much time will get you to New User so you can upload. Assuming you're not getting kicked, muted, blocked etc. Afk doesn't really count.

No. Just normal bones in blender. Then in unity, you add physbone component to the bones.

i think this is the place for this, is there anyway to scale an avatar? as in shrink or make them bigger? because ive got an avatar thats too big, its impractical for everything due to size, so im asking if theres a way to scale it
@full owl yes: open the avatar in unity, select the root node, and scale it to eg 0.6 to make it smaller

Photoshop is the obvious fix. But PSD files are semi standard.

You can't animate the view point directly.
Shader that shows only in the mirror, I think you can do it with poiyomi shader since it has specific vrc mirror options.
The latter might be impossible as you have to change the way the object in the world get rendered.

Anyone know roughly how long it takes for an Avatar uploaded to show up in VRChat?
I updated mine with Physbones (Finally) only to find in game no change. So I did some trickery and uploaded it as a new avatar, only to find like, 20 minutes later, it's still not showing up
(It DOES show in the content manager in Unity)
I assume there is just a wait time as the servers figure stuff out
theres no wait time, it should just show up when its done, unless they changed something i had a similer thing happen to me an avi wont update to new changes
It showed up after a few minutes, so I guess it was slow. Can't interact with anything though, that's going to be some troubleshooting!
think vrc just being funky, i had to wait 50 mins for an avi to be uploaded, the issue started a day ago, usually it takes less than a min
Make sure your on exactly 2019.4.31f1 because being on a minor patch out will let you uploade but it wont show up.

Yeah, people have been working on just that thing. Of course, PC has the Steam VR API layer that is way easier than OSC. Quest standalone does not. So some people have been working on just that, here's one example:

Only problem I can see you running into is latency, with a whole bunch of information I got it might take time before it actually loads for OSC

For this there is a fun trick where you can use a 4 axis puppet in each hand to have up to 8 prams on ik sync. So xyz left, xyz right, xy hips all on ik speed would probably be the best use.

Osc I really underrated. It lets code almost anything you can think of into the game. Combine it with avatar dynamics and it's insane.
I barely even knew it existed, I’ve seen in my menu many times and it caused a few issues before but I’ve never knew it could be used for this, but now that I know I don’t wanna go back

I didn’t think it was possible… but just watched a video where someone showcased their avatar using contacts to make a object track and follow another avatars head as if it’s constrained to it after it was touched.
As far as I knew, it was impossible to track another players data.

Hullo. I just recently got into modelling and wanted to know; is it easier to sculpt an avatar or to build it from scratch? I've seen tutorials that do both but I wanted some input.
kinda depends on your work flow and what you want it to look like.
Pure modeling is nice for lower poly art style, but sculpt is good for more organic shapes.
Modeling can take a lot of time if its not looking 100% right, where sculpt takes a long time to retopo.

You could try the "Play on wake" setting. But that means it plays every time you reset your avatar for FBT as well

I used to be able to double click a unity package and it would automatically open in whichever version of unity was already open, but now it opens the new project window.
Its possible to use the rotation constraint on Quest or maybe use the avatar dynamic script to imitate the rotation constraint?
Rotation constraints are not whitelisted, you could probably do some horrid shit with proximity contacts to get something close

should be asking in #user-support-old as you can't put pictures here to get help. You likely have an error that is fixable in the console. ctrl+shift+c to open it and make sure that the stop sign is enabled in the top right corner, it should have a light background. Clear you console and share what is still there that is RED in #user-support-old

hey i was wondering cause i heard there was a system where you can have an object crawl around your avatar body, example i was told was like having a spider object model that crawls ontop of y our avatar. is that a thing or am i remembering wrong?

Thinking about getting a vive face tracker for my index, but no way am I going to buy a vive pro eye just for the eye tracking.

You do have to do the final upload yourself as there is no way to sign in to you account for you.
best someone could do is give you a .unitypackage file with everything you need in it to click 3 buttons and upload.

question: some avatars have dance emotes where instead of the avatar itself dancing it creates a copy that does the emote, while you can still walk around freely (or become invisible). How is this done? Is there a prefab or a trick to it?
I tried placing a copy of my avatar inside my avatar, with world constraints, and a custom animation controller on it with the dance emotes, but it didn't do anything (the copy just stood in a bicycle pose)
or does it require multiple copies, each with just one single animation/controller for every dance?

CATS works best on the latest LTS versions, like 2.93.9
there are some extra fixes in the dev version of CATS, switch to it in the Settings and update section

the arms are a seperate mesh so where does one attach them on the hierarchy too?

I have a model that I made some .anim files using a dummy model to pass on to the actual model (avoiding an old bug) But now, when I go back to try and edit the.anim file, the actual model im working does not have the *.anim listed in It only has two items. I'm not sure how to describe this problem and im hoping someone can give me some keywords on what to search for. I have made 7 animations and the model only lists the two that I made with the model it self and not the dummy file.
The preview button is grayed out on the animations I have made with dummy file.
I guess my question is how do you tell unity (or where to look) to use smile.anim file made on X model to be used on Y model? When you click on Y model there is no smile.anim listed to edit or adjust.

Fix it. Seems i had to drag the anim file back onto the root of the current model I was working on for it to acknowledge it.

But nope, you can only upload avatars with a VRChat account that is at least New User rank.
You must obtain at least "New User" Trust Rank in our Trust and Safety system in order to upload content. You can get this by just spending a few hours in VRChat, hop some worlds, and make some friends. Give it some time and you'll be able to upload content in no time.
As an aside, you must have a VRChat account to upload content. That means you can't use a Steam account, Oculus account, or Viveport account to upload content like worlds or avatars.

Whats the best way to set up expressions? I currently have it set to simple gestures with my left hand (point/openhand/thumbs up/etc..) though this makes me accidently emote alot of the time. If I set it to activate in a menu, I won't be able to use expressions on the spot.. Is there a good middle ground?

I think the middle ground would be,
choose a few expressions that you'd prefer that it could be shown in real time, and put it into some "hard to accidentally happen" gesture for your controller.
For example, if you're using quest 2, put those into Fist or Rock n' Roll gesture
So you can use them on the go
And put the expressions that don't really require real time interaction in expression menu
Or maybe try it 2.0 way, everything into gesture, no expression in menu at all. And try your best not to activate them accidentally lol

This changes for every avatar, what I'd recommend is using VRWorldToolkit, now this is intended for Worlds but it works fine for diagnosing issues like this for Avatars. The feature you need for this can be found under "World Debugger" and tells you the exact file size each part of your avatar is taking up after you press build and publish.

Well for the windows version, you can use bone constraints, and have a dummy head bone that pulls it's rotation from the normal head
Problem though is the android version doesn't seem to allow those components
There used to be a way around it, but they also removed that method. So I believe there's nothing you can do other than wait for them to allow it

Heya! I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to make something perfectly follow a head as if parented to it, but not make the object invisible to the user cause it's attached to the head.
the thing i want to do is basically add something that follows the head perfectly as if parented, but still able to see it infront of you attached to you. It's something super important to me that could be super awesome if i can get it working
it is normally invisible because the head bone gets scaled to 0.0001 (or close to it) in first person. anything directly attached to the head also gets scaled. to fix that, add a Scale constraint to your object, set the source to be the neck (can be literally anything other than the head), and click Activate

I think because of your armature model has scale of 100 (which ideally should be 1), so the position value get scaled 100 times.

your bone placement is likely out of whack
they should be perfectly straight from front view and the knees slightly bent forward in side view

Trail renderer is good enough. You have to set trail renderer Min Vertex Distance to be smaller like 0.01

i have 2 mesh's rigged to the same armature and they bolth have visemes how would i combine the visemes so activating the A viseme on one mesh activates the other
I'm assuming you want to do this without merging the meshes.
In that case I'd animate the Visemes in unity through the playable layers using the Viseme Int. You can't assign 2 face meshes for 1 model after all.

Hey. Got a general query about avatar audio.
I'm working on an avatar with lots of short sound effects triggered by stuff like grabs and contact dynamics. (Inventory rustles, clicks, whacks, etc)
I'm wondering if anyone here is familiar with the limits on audio sources, such as a max quantity, as well as any other best practices or common pitfalls.
Perhaps how best to enable them. (Currently animating the audio source component itself)

1: quantity will affect your performance rating. you should also reduce the quality in the import settings, since it probably won't be noticeable, aswell as changing the sample rate to Optimize.
2: for better organization, you can put the audio sources on empty objects and toggle those instead. just more convenient imo
1: The performance rating will unfortunately be stuck at very poor due to the avatar including a light source, but I'll be sure to check what I can adjust for that regardless. Anything that makes it run better in practice is worth while.

depends if ur wanting to seperate a piece of a mesh or a object that was merged with other objects but i assume ur question is for the 2nd.. press tab on ur keyboard to enter edit mode then hover ur mouse over the object u want to select, click L on ur keyboard and it should select the mesh ur wanting to seperate. once selected press P on ur keyboard and then click selection then go back into object mode and you will see the two meshes are now seprated

The gloves would only be in the same position if they are parented in unity. If you want them to look like they are attached, you would have to set up proper weight paint in blender.

When you're uploading the Avatar, click 'Switch Build to Android'.
You may have to make some changes, like shaders, removing props, etc

If you are using Quest, you cannot enable loading of all avatars, only those that are up to Poor Ranking
unfortunately a lot of people seem to not care and just use very poor ranked avatars.

I originally reduced the poly count and baked my textures to one material for my quest star wars avatars, but then I had all the questies complain about the quality. They still looked pretty good imo, but they wanted the same quality as pc 💀.
I still try to optimize them as much as I can at least though.
I make nostalgia, so mines are as high quality as possible, within limits. Still end up very poor despite 16 MB and many animations.
i have done the experiment. while the chest bone are still parented to the spine, if they are connected, unity can auto map the rig. But if not, then manual mapping is needed. Though still subjected to different weight paint, length, width, etc.

ive recently been in a game world with my friends and one of them had an avatar, that had an inbuilt sword that worked inside the game. the avatar wasnt made by the world creators. does anyone have an idea on why that is. and if so, could send me some resources on how to do that.

since it got swallowed up in the other channel, does anyone have resources on how to make avatar guns/ shooting animations with triggers? only thing i could find online was some way outdated sdk 2 stuff or prefabs, but i want to make it custom but kinda dont know how to approach that
also stuff like fire on a lighter or smoke on a cigarette
fire and smoke is relatively easy, you just need a particle system and play around with that
im not sure where to start, never played with any of that stuff 😅
what im looking for is more like how to toggle it with pressing down the trigger of my controller and how to have it not dissapear imediately. i want it to stay in the world till the particle system itself ends and not till i stop pressing that trigger.
Make a sub emitter particle system and unparent the child emitter from the parent emitter. When you disable the parent the emitted particles from the sub emitter won't disappear
Just toggle the particle emission on and off rather than the object
Disabling the object kills all of the currently active particles whereas disabling emission just stops spawning them
This works for fully auto/streams of particles, but not for bursts
IMO without scripting the best way to do a burst outside of a sub-emitter is to use a really high spawn rate and set the max particles to what you want for the burst

From what I understand, you use blender to create a rigged and textured mesh (as .FBX), then Unity (version 2019.4.31f1) with the VRChat SDK (downloadable from site) to add things like physbones, avatar contacts, animations, and other setup stuff I don’t know.

Unpacking prefab doesn't break animation. Also you can just make animation without unpacking prefab.

If I set a tag of a gameobject in unity editor of "EditorOnly" but within the avatar itself, does that object still get uploaded? I assume any of its children wouldn't upload either

Well Phys bones are in the May/June sdks with improvements being made the later you go; it's free. You can convert from Dynamics to Phys if you have them both in the project and Dynamic scripts on the model. Toolbar VRChat SDK/Utilities/Convert... It has a long name but it's obvious which one it is

That's not what I was implying. Phys bones is a standalone system built by the VRC team. It has no dependencies to Dynamic Bones
In the event a model has not been updated to use Phys you can convert it using a tool that's provided in the sdk

but no. I don't know of a bow asset that uses Phys for pulling back the string

Getting the string to look right and the Arms to bend though uses constraints alongside weightpainting so idk. Quest might not work for the bow I made
Eh it doesn't have to be perfect... A custom hinge curve to shape the final bend should be good enough for questies not to be left out

if you updated to the latest sdk from a relatively outdated version, you might have other tools that might need updating if you use them as well as there have been a few breaking changes
eg. pumkin's avatar tools, lyuma's av3 emulator, etc

while back friend told me it'd help with another issue I was having (it didn't, go figure) and never touched it since, nor did I bother to uninstall it since I didn't think it would cause an issue like this

Medium rank avatars can't be perf-blocked, so it must be something else.
It is horrible hard to optimize a avatar without losing all it's cool features. I also already put every texture that doesn't need different shader settings, into the same material, to make sure, it is optimized as good as possible, without loosing quality.
why not? they told me so, that I am a gray robot, but the VRCSDK tells me, that I am 28MB and medium ranked.

Those are probably Quest players telling you that if your avatar doesn't have a Quest version uploaded.

into the same avatar, it is a different model of mines, but still better than a gray robot.
Must be download size then, only other grey robot scenario. Those people must have their download size set extremely low.
my PC version have 50k poligons
because there are also a lot of gameobjects inside of it, like weapons and tools....
You can bring the download size down by enabling crunch compression on your textures.
It'll reduce their quality a little bit, probably not enough to notice unless someone is pixel-peeping though.

Because it takes effort, skill and hard work to make things look good with less polygons

yes but it takes work to get there. Time and effort people won't invest because they play vrchat with 40fps so it's not their problem

if I would make a showcase with 5 avatars, 4 are with 100k poli and 1 with 1mio poli, would you find the 1mio version?
depends if the 1 million poly model has 10 outfits you can toggle between and the others have 1

Most of these polygons are in jewelery made for renders that are just glued onto the characters without any optimization

I am always asking this peoples and they always tell me, that they did not made the avatar, instead they just uploaded it.
either way, the performance blocked grey robot says Performance on it I'm pretty sure. Error looks like it has construction tape on it and not platform compatible used to be a robot with the avatar image on the chest.

Because if you have an avatar and making a roleplay or something to peoples, it would not work well, if they just see a gray robot, acting like a combine or sentry turret...
