no, avatars can only use the various gestures as input
you can get a bit creative with how you use them
for example
if you go from a fingergun gesture to a thumbs up, that had you curl your index finger only

You actually could do it in Avatars 3.0, but doing it would take a lot of effort, along with a lot of trial and error. Don't expect it to be easy. Instead, do what Sacred suggested first. Start small, work your way up while you get familiar with what 3.0 can do.

You'd probably have to use a combination of GestureLeft/GestureRight, and maybe cheat things a bit using speech visemes to keep things flowing properly.
But a Gesture combination lock is probably the best way. Keeps things nice and synched. You just have to State Machine things right.

you should never use 16k

🚫 People around you likely had, likely your avatar was hidden/disabled cause of default avatar download limit (100mb) 8k can reach that easy, if you are over 40 you are doing something wrong to be honest as i done one with 16 outfits on one avatar at <40mb (forgot size really)
Dance animations can easily get you over 40MB if you have a lot of them. The mp3s are a couple of megs each but the actual animations take up even more, even after compression

Unity doesn't even support 16k, 8k is the maximum resolution the texture importer can handle.
If you try to import a 16k image, it will be downscaled to 8k.
Sure, there might be a way around it, but the editor UI has a hard limit of 8k.

Question Regarding the Radial Puppet
I've got an animation on the radial puppet to toggle on a book as it opens and flips pages, but the animation I applied to the hand bones is not working.
Does anyone know if hand animations work on Radial puppet?
did you put the animation on the gesture layer?
humanoid/transform animations should be on the gesture playable layer, and have a layer mask that allows transforms on those bones
I did not, the animation is on the expressions menu with the radial puppet as the control for the hand+book.
Im guessing its because it cant override the hand animations, so would the mask be the thing that enables that override?
animations are not in the expression menus, they are in one of your playable layers, i'm guessing you have it on FX
you're using a radial puppet, so you probably have a layer with a blend tree in one of your playable layers
let me check this all real quick..
expression menu is for controlling your parameters, and those parameters drive animators in your playable layers

Yeah that’s not really a thing you add to your avatar. You want your text to speech to come over your microphone.

With what you had in the video, it would've put all of the layers together for you and simulated the action menu so all you would have to do is click. But it's really up to you how hard you want to work.

Unity is a game engine, you don't edit things in unity
if you want to retexture, that depends with how the model comes

it might come with Substance painter files, to edit in Substance painter
it might come with Photoshop project files, in that case you'd edit in Photoshop, or another program that can edit .psd files
or you could just edit the actual textures (.png)
but that method is prone to issues
especially around edges

can anyone help im trying to make a toggle for the decal option in poiyomi but for some reason the animation doesn't toggle the decal? if i record it it toggles on and off and shows 0 and 1 respectively but then when i play the animation it doesn't change it to the value it's set to? i've right clicked the toggle to animate it, and enabling the decal manually works same for disabling but the animation doesn't toggle it and idk why ;-;
If you're trying to toggle the entire section of the shader, that generally doesn't work. If so, try animating the alpha or something instead

I have seen Poiyomi or someone else in their discord talk about it before, it doesn't work the way you think where it deactivates everything in the section
Once you upload with that toggled on, the properties are active on the shader. So you have to animate the actual properties. The checkbox for the entire section is not a property

The "Decal" category being toggled won't work though as far as I know, so to make the decal not visible you would instead want to animate the alpha or scale to 0 or something

don't specifically search for "light" toggles
Actually 3.0 toggles persist throughout instances
If you had uploaded a 3.0 avatar before the updated that added saving parameter states, they will by default persist between instances.
However if you're making an avatar on the latest sdk, you need to mark the saved checkbox for them in your parameters list, and the default behavior is unsaved.

You must obtain at least "New User" Trust Rank in our Trust and Safety system in order to upload content. You can get this by just spending a few hours in VRChat, hop some worlds, and make some friends. Give it some time and you'll be able to upload content in no time.
As an aside, you must have a VRChat account to upload content. That means you can't use a Steam account, Oculus account, or Viveport account to upload content like worlds or avatars.

I followed the directions for adding a Quest fallback avatar to my PC avatar, and after upload (and even changing avatars) VRC wouldn't let me join a PC-only world, claiming I was on Quest. This was false. Is this a known bug?
yeah its a known issue where if you upload something to quest in unity and login to vrchat right after it'll think you're on quest

slightly tangential question, but maybe the kind community in here can help me: I have a model that needs some editing (removing a nosering). it's literally ~20 meshes that I need to delete. is there any way to do this without importing it to blender, then reexporting it, rerig, all that song and dance? it's literally 20 meshes

Keeping default IK and locomotion settings on 3.0 is almost the same as keeping default gestures and not using visemes on 2.0
Gotta put in some effort if you want nice things.

I said 'is almost the same' for a reason. If you know 2.0 already, then you should know to add your gestures and visemes, correct? Correct. So complaining about default IK and locomotion instead of adding it is very comparable to someone that knows 2.0 neglecting to add what most would call the bare minimum. Perfect comparison.

2.0 is going to be phased out. Not anytime soon, sure. But eventually all of your models will need to be redone anyway. Learning to use 3.0 instead of complaining about not knowing how to use 3.0 and spreading the idea that it is in some way inferior is only doing yourself and the people you're advising a diservice, really. Yeah not sure how 3.0 has worse IK when its literally the same IK. Animations may be different but you can just reassign some stuff and it looks like 2.0

It's more-so why stay with 2.0. 3.0 has a much more indepth gesture system, different gestures per hand, non-blendshape visemes, custom editable eye rotation values, synced variables, saving states between worlds, and multiple animations layers supported in the AV3 descriptor to name some stuff

speaking of default locomotion, are there any good guides on customizing the locomotion in 3.0?
it's pretty simple
the default locomotion controller has 3 main nodes
Standing, Crouch, Prone (i believe)
each of those contain a blend tree
each blend tree contrains the animations for movement in any direction
that's about what i figured.
You can actually even just make it all from scratch using the given public parameters.
The templates definitely give a solid jumping off point though.
Lets you see how they typically work.
But you could blend into entirely different blendtrees any time you want, so adding more blendtrees or expanding existing ones is pretty attractive.
You could make blending more precise. You could have multiple stages of upright as opposed to only standing, crouching, and prone.
Anything you want.
IK is slightly different btw.
Most noticeable in FBT.
You could also do things to make it work with you though.
i just copied the default ik and made the knee and elbow bends a bit less exaggerated.
When you say IK, you might mean the locomotion layer. Dealing with the IK itself can be a bit more in-depth than a lot of people probably try to do.
honestly messing with the ik pose is probably something you would want to do if you had a model with animal legs
IK pose can do some interesting things if you take advantage of the way it does a check through that on every quick menu opening.

But typically, nah. Animal legs are usually handled either through constraints, which copy existing bones that are being driven by the regular IK, or they're using a completely separate IK script that you could mess with individually.
Rare cases people just animate the extra limbs manually.
OH, or a combination of both to get actual front to rear mirrored IK.

i mean animal legs actually have the same number of joints as human legs it's just different lengths and they stand on their toes instead of their heels.

Limb and grounders can run on nulls too. So make one, copy paste, position.

Rotate solver is a property of grounder so it can walk on surfaces other than the floor itself.

And it affects how quickly the raycast updates.

No I've never seen something with a grounder take steps actually, all the settings only effect how much it raycasts by. Was there a specific grounder you were using?
Possible too. Raycasters are often dozens of meters long in terms of target spread.

You have to rank up from Visitor. Play roughly 24 hours, visit public worlds, hang out with people, and dont get blocked by being a dickhead. You'll get an email about rank up sooner or later.
Additionally, you have to make a VRChat account. If you're using Steam at the moment you can merge your account with the VRC account you make without losing progress on your rank.

Unfortunately I don't know the exact process off the top of my head, but I do know there's an option to do it within your VRC account once you make it. Just follow the instructions there, it was pretty straightforward

a suggestion btw, if you want to decimate
select areas of the mesh separately, like for example the legs, a piece of clothing etc
then decimate them using F3 -> (decimate)
choose a ratio that still has it look fairly good
do that with all the parts because some parts can make do with a much lower ratio than others
then after you're done with that, then use the auto decimation to kill the rest

The model is wearing 2 ornaments with faces so I was thinking of giving them eyes that follow someone though those would be 4 eyes in total and adding the bones will be a bother I think since they aren't centered anymore.
@brave walrus boom. if you want your eyes always follow the player, you can use a shader with billboard effect, them will always look locally straight into player's camera (view)

Everytime i go into play mode with sdk 3 it opens up the avatar uploader automatically

The correct way is inspect the fbx and adjust “import scale” but that won’t work if you broke your prefab.
The safe, but improper way is to just scale down the root game object. But this will make animations that scale you not work correctly, they’ll assume 1 1 1 is your default size. Thankfully, not many animations attempt to scale you.

you could just have bones for the other eyes, with rotation constraints on them which copy the actual eye bones rotation
you can add a Rotation constraint on an object, and give it one or more sources, which the constraint will use to determine how much the rotation of the object its own should be affected
if you have one source only, and have its weight to 1, then for any rotation of the source, the object with the constraint will follow

That is a very long and tedious process, try not to go in expecting to make the perfect avatar on your first day. Start small, make props learn the tools and best practices, work your way up with less complex characters to more complex characters.

the reason why you cant see it in first person is because the head bone is scaled down to 0
if you make a duplicate head bone, and then parent the hair bones to it, you can use a parent constraint on that duplicate to make it follow the actual head bone

Another of my odd questions! Is it possible to hide part of an avatar ( a certain gameobject) from the camera, so that when taking pictures of the avatar, said object does not show up? Sort of like how mirrors can be configured to only reflect certain things?
It is generally possible because there is such a thing as a layer... Cameras can record certain layers and leave others out. Im not sure though if it works in vrchat like that (that you could make an object thats on a layer that isnt the default thats seen by players but not by a custom camera you made)... Unless you mean the vrchat ingame camera
For that one im actually not sure what layers it records
cant really do it with layers as the player avatar is on mirror reflection or player layer depending on local/remote
there are some shaders around that can hide something from mirror or camera so you'll want something like that I suppose
shader checks if its being rendered from the camera by checking fov/resolution etc, someone better versed in shaders can probably answer you better in that regard.

For worlds, You can control what parts of your world are in layers, and on the camera you choose what layers it can see. This is not an option for uploading avatars however
You can use shaders that know if they are on a mirror pass however if you want parts that do not appear in the mirror, or only do

I'm trying to make a BUNCH of colour options for my avatar. What would be the most efficient way (performance wise) to do it? Have an animation clip for every colour and just set it to that clip when the colour is changed?
Or have 2 clips, one at 0 hue shift, one at 1 hue shift. And use parameter drivers to go to specific points in those animations (Red option uses a prameter driver to set the colour animation to 0.35 or whatever red would be)
You could just do like a Hue Float parameter with a radial menu.
So I have that currently. But the problem is I wanted to also add saturation and brightness as options too. But I don't have enough parameter slots to do it

I don't see the harm in using an integer in this case, but you may want to consider using bool if your using int parameters for just 0 and 1.

Is there any way to swap the mesh used for visemes? can't seem to have the animation record the swap and the parameter isn't really there when adding manually.
If you are using the base "Viseme blend shape" then no you shouldnt be able to swap that in game. You would need to use "Viseme Parameter Only" to swap meshes and such in the FX controller

When I'm doing dynamic colliders on the hair, am I going to end up making a dynamic collider along the length of each hair bone?
Cause it seems like this hair, as simple as it is, is going to require like 12 dynamic colliders for one section
And I wanna make sure I'm not just doing something stupid that has an easier way
