Photon has a range of products which offer Client Hosted servers, Authoritative servers for say first person shooters or MMO's, or in the case of VrChat, hosts lobbys. Each world i imagine would be a individual game hosted in the cloud.

Photon Pun is also scaling, they just pay more for the peak Concurrent users, hence why VrChat worlds in them self never really fail.

As said before, Photon offers many services including Client hosted (Like the old call of duty where games end when the owner leaves), Self hosting on there own servers (not what vrchat does for its world servers), or using PUN which hosts the games in Photons own hosted servers. Then VrChat just hosts the the stuff such as friends and there back end on AWS

Also i feel for the dev's, I just developed a real time web socket based server backend to support a game with up to 10k Concurrent users. But that game needs to send basically no real significant amount of data.
I can only imagine trying to write a scaling solution that can handle the sheer amount of data and requests made that vrchat uses.

It can be tough to find your group, especially now when there's so many crazy public instances. From what I've read and observed by making alt accounts and trying my best to navigate VRChat as a newbie, your best bet is to try to find people that are talking about something you're interested in and just kinda sliding in. About 50% of the time you'll fail somehow or the convo won't stick, but surprisingly often you run into cool people.

Of course, that does mean that you have to strike up conversation with what are effectively strangers, so that's the tough part.

it takes practice, don't worry 😄 You can do it! Anxiety is shitty, I know the feeling. My approach is really brute force (ignore being uncomfortable) and doesn't work for everyone, but everyone's got something that'll work. Just give it time and don't worry about messing things up

Depending on what service options you use, cloudflare is typically used as a middle man between the actual servers and the users clients, and can do things such as act as the primary dns provider, but also caching of requests, ddos protection, rate limiting, detection and filtering of malicious network traffic and so on. If the actual servers are having issues, there is nothing cloudflare can do, other than perhaps serve cached requests, which is really for just static web assets. VRChat doesn't "run off" cloudflare.

I don't get the hate mongodb gets honestly. Sure, when it first came out a decade ago it tended to be pretty unstable and did have some scaling issues, but it has matured quite a bit since then. Like any database cluster, it can get over saturated with network requests, and is a problem every database system can experience, not just mongodb.

I have worked on many big databases. Nothing wrong with Mongo doing a lookup to fetch all friends of a single user, even with 20 million users played.
Its all on indexing, and more advance operations / efficient lookup querys and table design

Though in this particular case I think its more of an issue of their mongodb cluster not being able to handle the amount of concurrent connections/lookups during peak hours.

Idiots, its not DDOS. The servers collapse at around 35k players. Each friday has been bringing in mroe than 40k players. Theyve yet to update their ISP, cloudflare, and host servers

I play on vrc on a consistent basis, the team knows the numbers they get every weekend, why have they not been able to keep the servers up to support these amount of players for more than 4 weeks now.
It honestly is getting ridiculous and I am no longer supporting vrc+ because of this. I supported them so that they could stop these sort of issues from happening and it seems like it’s just happening more now than ever
