You just have to have a good router. Nothing else. You could have the worst internet ever and it would work flawlessly if router good enough.

But it uses the local network usually, except if your pc/headset is not in the same network.

Like you can set up your router so other devices can't see each other which will result in the local network not to work.
In this case Virtual Desktop would have to stream via Internet which will need a very good internet connection

There are some known issues regarding false disconnects which could be what you're experiencing.
