@open lava Flex: Only game with all art made by me ๐ (Except for the default skysphere visible in the menu screen)
Damnnnnnnnnn
I think it'd be fun to do a game that's only made with engine/editor assets
All art was my GF and I did the shaders and gameplay
I found some gems in there when trying to get UI wrapped up ๐คฃ
@open lava Cool! Which game was yours?
Ah that one looked cute indeed ๐
Thanks lol
We also got an honorable mention ๐
I know yours was so good
@brave current greg?
Greg?
oh, what was your game ๐ฎ
Dapper Dan's Graveyard Smash ๐
doh, I saw you say that earlier ๐คฃ
Team was Me and @edgy fulcrum
@glass fossil Hehe cheers! ๐ It was fun to make it too. But also stressful since I had to go to my fulltime job on the weekdays
Congrats again peeps!
No youโre awesome!
Congratulations to the winners! Great job guys
killer emote @uncut mortar ๐ฎ
Cheers man, it's the little things ๐
Hey everyone, we are going to be taking our jam entry "Greg & and the Great Evil" to a full game, i would love to hear from those that played it. What were some of your favorite cards, enemies, relics, encounters. I just like to get that kind of information so i can make it a better game ๐
fuck what I think
go make money
your shit is basically already almost a commercial product
so
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
hah, yeah ๐ we're just going to be growing it into something people will hand over that sweet sweet cash for ๐
I understand why it wasn't a finalist because I still think you whiffed the theme hard
but you don't need to win more things :p
but my collection!
Win money on steam!
through hard work and determination, you too could pull the steam slot machine lever
haha i'm well versed in the slot machine lever, got a punch card for it now!
@serene girder although tbh the attraction for me is that you took a decentish deck builder and added a fun environment to it
2d makes me sleep, but I was pretty excited to see the next room and click for interactions ๐คฃ
yeah, i wanna really dig into more of that
Like mechanically separate yourself from the competition by leaning hard into the parts that make your game unique
I think it could be a great game when fleshed out
I however, wont be making mine a full game. Got other projects already and too much work ๐
Some of those winners looked real good. Might need to play a few.
Great job to everyone though.
second place was a really cool game. idea was nice.
@mental walrus what did you use for level design? a voxel tool?
I used Magicavoxel for all the artwork
I think this has been my worst jam so far! Didn't get featured screenshots, honorable mention, or even a clip in the background reel.
Framing it positivily... perhaps this means I now have even more room for improvement ๐คฃ
Voxels are really good for fast block outs
Hey guys, do we have any programmers/blueprinters here who are interested in doing a jam this weekend? I am hosting one but we have a really uneven ratio of artists:programmers ๐
whats the jam
@oblique cairn I really liked your game! I had it in my top 15 ๐
@oblique hearth Thanks ๐ Very nice to hear - will probably be diving deeper into physics based VR for the next one, really fun to work with
Which one is your game?
I worked with the team who made Greg and The Great Evil ๐
Yeah! That one looks sweet - meaning to play through it and a bunch of other good looking ones after getting some time sensitive tasks done
we had so much fun working on it... lots of humor in the voice lines and the final boss made us all giggle every play test ๐
sorry mods for posting a game jam link ๐ฆ
Had a blast this game jam everyone! Congrats to all the winners!
Wow our game had an honorable mention! That's super cool!
Sameee which one was yours
Planted ๐
Join us for the upcoming HTC Vive Developer Jam in London, a weekend developer event to experiment and create the next generation of XR applications. Using the latest in VIVE hardware, including forward-thinking SDKs like Eye/Lip and Hand tracking, we challenge you to redefin...
who were your team members @uncut mortar for planted?
@winter abyss (David Nicholls), @plush osprey (Liam Grice), @timid badge (Sarah Hull), Michael Hyman and myself (Shaun Baker)
Is there a consensus on best multiplayer implementation practices for game jam, @pine fulcrum since you've played a lot of jam games what made it easiest for you to play test?
I used world position offset materials
all i know is im never doing a gamejam again
I love gamejams
Wish I could do them everyday honestly
But those don't pay the bills sadly
When you have everything on the line, you have to shift priorities from "fun" to "serious" mode
someday
I've failed everysingle ue4 gamejam :/
always getting a "nice try", incomplete game - feeling
i think i tend to try a really big idea and could not make it because the time limit
literally all my projects never get done because I lose interest, I've been thinking of trying to do a jam specifically because it might force me to try and actually finish something lol
Money is a good motivation
But, you have to just find something that you enjoy working on
eh, you don't really 'fail' game jams unless you don't put anything out at all, and even if you put out something a bit broken, you hopefully got something out of the experience
@minor hemlock JUICE
Hey! I'm looking to work with people soon on a game jam. I love animating things and I need some work to get me back into game development.
Anybody working with human figures in a future jam?
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6jhHjArDB9OKbJwcCpHx8xBl9Ne63CCD <- heres YouTube archive of my playthru stream, twitch records already expired
hopefully i didnt miss any part :p
So who won the unreal film jam contest? I've heard nothing about it
Echoing @maiden loom here @cerulean wren - not winning a game jam doesn't mean you failed, there were over 460 entries and a small amount of winners. Failing is simply not making anything
Game jams teach you how to push a product out the door without wasting time on "perfection"
Good lesson to have regularly ๐
Pfft, all my games are wonderful :D
(actually most of them push boundaries pretty hard, and as such struggle to meet the same polish as other games - but in some respects that's the point and every game I've worked on has been a notable achievement)
..but none of them have ever won anything.
Yeah
The thing I think people forget about these jams
Especially so with MegaJams though
Polish is almost certainly everything
You can push the limits, but at the end of the day, if you don't have a fully presentable good looking product, that initial wow factor won't hit the judges
There are some caveats to that, but over the past 5 years, it seems to be one of the critical keys to winning
And, nothing is saying you can't continue working on your jam project after the jam either.
Its all about what team you make
All game jams ive done I made sure even if they dont have game dev exp I made sure they had what it takes
Game jams also make really cool portfolio pieces
Iโve done one and to be honest I outperformed my team and was a little upset that they didnโt output nearly as much on their end.
The work that was done was so minimal that it probably could have been done in an hour but it was a two day jam.
it's also a teamwork/project management challenge
That happens quite a bit actually. I've been on both sides of it. There are too many factors that can come up during a jam.
Also, when working with new teams, it may be hard to adjust.
sometimes it looks more like an art competition, some game w/o actual art have won b4 tho
not verry recent
making an untested mechanic is way harder and way more risky
aye
but it's deffo more fun
the one we won years ago we used a Rift and a Leap Motion device to do a hands-in world physics sandbox game
it was janky AF, but sometimes risky mechanics pay off ๐
if you're not doing something at least a little bit experimental, why are you even jamming :D?
I would like to get more into project management. I may need to have a team volunteer to at least discuss the technical elements of a game I want to make.
if you want to get into project management, the first step is accepting that you need to relinquish all creative control
^^^unless you lead with an iron fist
Inexperienced project managers only ever get in the way. Be amazing or don't be there at all imo
My first game jam PM sat on the couch and ate food the entire time
@open lava so like every PM ever?
Ooooof
best PM I had pretty much just let the team focus on their individual areas of expertise, and he handled all the communication and other things that would otherwise take time away from the other team members
The worst PMs think of themselves as 'idea people' (aka useless people)
My view is similar to what @rigid fog said, a lot of things can come up during the JAM. This time .. I had a very good and balanced team, and the project almost came together, but I didn't account for someone pushing the 'panic' button at the last moment, and leaving the ship with a big whole in it. I guess it was just bad luck this time. But I'm pretty happy with the MegaJAM experience.
and I slightly disagree with @maiden loom on project managers having to relinquish control over creativity. I assume, that you are saying that have to relinquish part of the control (which is the right answer in my view). But the words make it sound that one has to relinquish 'total control' .. which i disagree with.
100 BP-nodes
100 lines of code
100 level tweaks
push 10 Commits
Every single day!
I mean, if you're a game jam team, you want someone who isn't just a "product manager", because with your limited time and manpower, you want someone productive.
If you're in a working environment, even on a small game, project management is a full time job in itself, and creative work is what your designers, artists etc. are for.
Yes. You can't simply be a project manager in a 5-dev jam project lol
But by all means be the PM, Creative Lead and Lead Programmer
However. In a jam. Game Design is best when spread all over the team. Just depends on your team composition and experience though. Sadly too many variables.
I think you need a member who is going to put their foot down to keep the project in scope and moving towards a polished direction
sure - but that person is rarely going to be doing literally just "ideas" and "project management"
yeah .. I agree on that
Ideas people are who you send your game to when you want it to be worse than it is already
Coz thats everyone, dedicated ideas people simply don't bring anything else to the table (such as required experience)
I've met a fair few people throughout my work who hold their ideas at a high value and they never have good ideas (end of story)
every so often you need an idea guy to succeed to give everyone something new to copy off of.
Idea guys don't get heard if they can't execute it themselves (which is a good filter)
idea guys are worthless without the ability to actually produce something
otherwise we call them designers
you'll find most of the "new ideas" or interesting successful small titles come from people who did a lot of development on their project
those are the people who had the ability to continuously iterate without relying on anyone else
Guys, anyone can help me with basic replication?
My client doesn't replicate to server
This channel should be a "You're in a jam? #game-jam-chat has you covered" during the offseason
And actual game jams can be used to prove we can solve problems quick
Is there a list of upcoming game jams specifically for UE?
I know they happen regularly but I don't remember seeing a list outside of the forums
The next Epic one is usually februaryish
Awesome. Do they announce it on the Unreal Launcher these days? I've been out of the loop on commnunity stuff for a while.
it gets announced on the livestream etc
@scenic venture jam start stream is recently scheduled before jam is even announced, so look at below of UE twitch stream
thanks guys! I'll be sure to keep an eye out for this one
We're mic buddies now ๐ I have that one too ๐
what are the minimum reqs someone should have before joining a jam team?
Nothing
Just be upfront about what you can/can't/will/wont do
Someone might take you on for little tasks if you're brand new, who knows
It's usually best to try and work with people with similar levels of experience - you'll have similar expectations of one another and what you can achieve
it'll be a better learning experience for all involved when everyone is on the same level
@autumn summit depends purly on team decision what people they seek and who they need
there lot of losly made teams so i don't think you will have problem finding one.
Did a game jam once and never again, decided to do it with a friend. I did everything and he literately nothing, that's when I learned to not trust my friends ๐คจ
Ah yes, the classic "school group project experience"
@hybrid lintel My cousin's fiancee actually failed her final year of game art due to that, I was so mad on her behalf. I know the people running her course and wanted to give them an angry message on FB ๐
Didn't think it actually happened though
Its a factor as to why I solo dev ๐ Just not a major one
oh wow that sucks :P
gotta love those school group projects, especially on gamedev :p
my most successful group was group where I did ~50% of all the work, from group of 5
usually I ended doing way more
not because I would have wanted but sh*t needed to get done and some people always bailed, only to show up on the last day trying to commit something (this happened on two projects)
School group projects should be 1) evaluated individually or 2) banished for eternity
@storm flare Just team with people you know are on that same mindset of pushing out a quality project and willing to work for it
No one I know who meets that criteria ever wants to jam ๐
I sorta kinda want to one day win #1 as solo dev, but not sure i should say that out loud because then its like saying I can actually do it ๐ค
yeah, I might try a solo project if I manage to catch some time for a game jam, don't expect to win anything tho ๐
whos doing the global game jam? ๐
Not me, I've been hard at work on the Decade Jam
I'm doing GGJ. I've done the past 2 and it's been fun every time
Been a couple years since I've last done global game jam. Not sure if I'll have time for it this year though. Maybe next year.
I'm not sure when I'll do a game jam. I've just started Ue4 development about a month ago and am starting to really understand the UI and programming. I'm honestly just bad a texturing / 3d modeling and can never come up with any decent ideas...
I'm headed to GGJ later today, will hopefully be more useful than I was last year ๐
Might do pixel art or Blender modeling. Something outside my usual coding role.
Has the theme been announced yet?
Big thanks to our 2020 headline sponsor: Microsoft. Please take a couple of minutes to visit our fundraising campaign.
theme goes public once the last site start
It is now 5pm in Hawaii, so that means it is time for... the theme for the 2020 Global Game Jam, is.....

Repair!

Happy jamming everyone! ๐๐ #GGJ2020
Seems like a rather constricting theme compared to ue4's style
repair so
sewing
contruction
robot repair any type (Machine or animatronics)
Building repair
repairing a broken heart
good luck to everyone taking part in the GGJ ๐
Good luck with the Global Game Jam, folks! ๐ช
Seems like more of a genre than a theme ๐
https://globalgamejam.org/2020/games/torpedo-dash-9 Check out our global game jam ๐
First game jam and first time making a game but managed to get "best design" and "audience favourite" at your Jam Site! Was so much fun, definitely doing GGJ again next year!
https://globalgamejam.org/2020/games/blueprint-extreme-trainer-8 ,Check our game; Our main goal is help the user to learn more about the engine, ( like other games made in jams, we have alot of bugs xD)
Global Game Jam 2020 Submission
This is our teams GGJ submission video. My role was a 3d modeler and texture artist

A game my team and I worked on during Global Game Jam 2020
Its made in unity not unreal, sorry unreal ๐
read description for more info
https://globalgamejam.org/2020/games/cobble-7 Here's my game made in Unreal engine with a team of 8 people
Also the winter ue4 jam is coming up soon right?
We made a shared space VR fixer game for GGJ: https://twitter.com/Victor1erp/status/1224547630929338368?s=20
We managed to get some footage a day after the jam. This is "Fixshift" - because being stuck in a box fixing things with friends, is what we consider a great time. #GGJ20 #UE4 https://t.co/6aYqtGbItm
My team and I developed a game for the GGJ. It's more a tech demo than a game (we didn't have the time to make a full level). But it exists!

hmmmmmm ;>
Did anyone ever receive the VAX license from the epic megajam?
@gaunt copper where did you check that schedule ?
Woohoo, finally got my jam prize ๐ฅณ
@loud basalt nope not yet
Nice ๐ค
Is the other side space cats?
@autumn abyss UE4 twich profile, check below video screen
thanks
OMG I didn't even noticed, NETWORK MULTIPLAYER FUNDAMENTALS YESSSS!!!!!!!
that makes me so happy
@carmine kindle Wow, congrats! Looks amazing.
@tranquil matrix Really glad you got to participate in the GGJ! Fixshift looks really cool. ๐
@autumn abyss my point is there jam suppose to be this month and feb 13 stream seems to be only one that go along the topic
sorry I'm not following you saying that the 13 is probably the announcement day for the Epic game jam?
here's my entry for the GGJ as well guys https://globalgamejam.org/2020/games/dreams-3
@autumn abyss maybe ^^'
still it would be kind of wierd for less then a week to go announcement
Dunno if I'll do it this time, sort of want to but also kind of burnt out ๐
I donโt want to skip the winter jam since havenโt missed a jam after starting doing them in spring 2018 but I think imma do something light for it instead
Go low scope
MMOFPS perhaps
In VR obviously
found this old blend file from a jamgame that never got finished
press F for the fish thingy
for he lurks in the depths of my pc
press delete instead to banish whatever that is back to where it came from
hail ctulhu
tbh, it's beginning to seem like there won't be a winter jam this year
Yeah. We're approaching mid-February and there's still no sign of one. Maybe they have different jam plans this year. ๐ค
Well we will hear something in next stream considering the topic
No WinterJam:'<
Bummer.
At least there's still a spring jam planned. Very curious about "similar contests" as well! ๐
I wonder if they burned themselves out trying to play all megajam entries ๐
tbh, the whole megaprizes thing kinda ruined it for them, now they are too popular
but seriously tho, it's partly true, they had to go from monthly jams to 4 in a year after ue jams got more popular
and now we might be looking at 2 per year :p
I wouldn't be surprised if they reduced frequency. Maybe just the Spring Jam and the MegaJam. But I'm still super interested to hear about these "similar contests". ๐
I like that there are prizes though, and that it was made popular, but they should certainly have the manpower to be ready for it next time ๐
They did 'similar contests' for a while in the UDK days, but it was a bust because it just turned into art contests
I hope these contests have very little to be with art...
to be fair last year's WinterJam had the least amount of entries
mostly because it's so close to the Global Game Jam, AND it's a period where people tend to get sick (case in point, my whole team last year feel sick during the jam me included, and we could never finish our concept)
it's not really convenient organising an epic jam during this period I believe
That's a great point. Epic sponsors the Global Game Jam, too. It probably makes more sense to simply invest in that instead of doing both.
We're not doing a Winter Jam this year, but we have plans to organize a contest prior to the typical "Spring Jam" timeframe
๐
AllarJam
does that mean you have to use old unreal version too?
UT3 'Make Something Unreal' 15th anniversary, yeah?
what are the categories in an @pine fulcrum jam
Buggiest? Most Gratuitous Use of BSP? I Had To Beat This Game With Console?
its where u run a promo campain for ur non existing game ๐
most followers wins
cuz marketing is everything
"Best Asset Flip" Marketplace assets only: No custom code, bps, meshes etc
For the AllarJam your win condition must be completely hidden and only possible to find via console
Every game must also be named WindowsNoEditor.
Winter jam: 300 devs 1 project whoever pushes the most in 5 days wins
If you get a merge conflict youโre out
sounds like VCS Battle Royale
avoiding merge conflicts is far too easy
just generate a shit load of unique content
work solo
making a game that requires obscure knowledge of the UE4 console commands could be kinda fun, actually
or I dunno, I guess you could branch feats in solo dev too and get conflicts but I dunno if it's truly possible on gamejam kinda period
MMO in a weekend jam would be a curious one
Pretty hard to get merge conflicts working solo unless you have some really terrible practices.. like you'd have to work on one branch, then work on another, never merging either of them into master or merging back from master :P
I would still love to do a jam where, instead of a theme, the prompt is a set of design constraints.
that could be fun ๐ "one button controls" o.o
hmm like you get an unfinished project you have to stay inside of or something pfist?
@wind cobalt I was thinking more like "Entire game must take place in one room" or "Monochrome only". Things like that.
that would be very interesting
@hybrid lintel I actually have conflicts on my custom branches often, not on a game though but game tech
I guess if you work on multiple branches it could happen
like if I modify some rendering code for some experiments, I don't usually maintain that work until I need it later on
oh right, it's really equivalent to solo dev there as the main renderer gets updates from others
oh well ๐
lol :)
and when it comes to game prototypes, you never merge them either
but rather implement better on the main path
also why are you up at 4am :p
I was just about to go to bed :P
Allar GameJam should be pixel precise platforms only, since he loves it ๐
Sounds like KaizoJam
Is there some feed or Twitter I could follow to figure out what game jams exist?
They did one at my university but I was unable to attend. Would love to take part in a remote one in the near future
there's https://itch.io/jam/ but it's an incredibly overwhelming list
Holy cow it is a big list. Thank you for that though!
@civic dock you should take part in one of the GMTK Jams by Mark Brown then, the theme is always something design related
who wanna join voice chat
Looks like people who only won 6 month licenses for VAX are getting 12 month licenses instead
That's nice of them
Friendly tomatoes
@everyone Hello friends, I would like your help, I already participated in some game jam and one of the fruits that I generated, given the need and problems I had, was a collaborative contract. I created a model and I would like to share it for you to give your opinion (I enabled the possibility to comment in doc). Feel free to use and help improve! Thank you very much for your contribution!
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OjPE2wmoKse3golLF5qaddeUp0kRFXyJe9pn0bX7W7I/edit?usp=sharing
In this contract, I add items such as provision for transferring intellectual property from members who have abandoned the project, profit sharing, expectations, the rights and duties of members...
With more opinions, the more mature and polished this contract will become for to be use
what this has to do with game jams?
or you actually want people to sign a contract over game jam game?
I mean, it's just few days of fun people are having together, if you want to move on after the jam and make it a real game, maybe then start drafting contracts
also, there's a good reason why everyone is disabled on this server
you really want to ping 20k people with that?
what this has to do with game jams?
@small fern The contract has the exact proposal to ensure that the team members have responsibility, rights and duties in the production of the game, can you understand what I wrote earlier?
or you actually want people to sign a contract over game jam game?
@small fern I've participated in more than 10 game jam and I've had a lot of problems, so I decided to create this contract model. To avoid the same problems I had.
I mean, it's just few days of fun people are having together, if you want to move on after the jam and make it a real game, maybe then start drafting contracts
@small fern Well, it's not fun to work with people who have no commitment to the team, nobody wants to waste their time, at least I don't.
I deeply regret that you are unable to realize the importance of my post, that I offer the first version of a contract free of charge, which I believe most do not have. I'm sorry for wasting your time with this ping. If you have nothing to contribute and add, just ignore it, it doesn't cost much.
I also extend my apologies to anyone who felt hurt by the ping. My intention is to be able to leave the best contract model for the development of digital games, in voluntary teams (that do not receive salary) that I can.
The more people helping, criticizing the contract, the closings, the more polished and mature he will become.
My intention is only to contribute to a community with this model of contract, because I have had , many problems with the team members without commitment.
well the ping didn't work as this server has disabled it ๐
but I feel that you overcomplicate game jams now. if someone asked me to sign a contract to participate on game jam team, I'd just look somewhere else
your own work has your copyright anyway, nobody can legally take your work from gamejam, even if it's some other team members and publish a game using the work you've done, even if there's no contract
so I honestly don't see the point here - at all
as for wasting time, no contract is going to fix that on game jams
what does fix that is that you only work with people you already know and trust
A contract is simply an agreement between people who want to work together, and ensure that each one works and that they have rights and duties. And it has to do with assumed responsibilities. There is a difference between copyright and intellectual property, they are two different things. Intellectual property can be transferred and sold, copyright cannot. Example: Disney has the intellectual property and right of the Star Wars brand, but the copyright will always belong to George Lucas, he will always be the author. (correct me if I mistake)
There are people who want to participate in a game jam just to have fun, without any commitment to the team or the work that will have to be developed, and often the work is not fun to do. Because in the same way that composing / creating a song is different from listening to a song, writing a book is different from reading a book.
Imagine the following situation: An artist gives up on the project, while the rest of the team is engaged, the artist simply left the team without giving satisfaction, but he did the art, but he left the team in hand, what will happen with the project, if the team continues and gives money? Can the artist legally request royalites? Even though he abandoned the team and left everyone in trouble? It is not fair for a person to be paid for something they have given up on and left the rest in trouble. A contract guarantees that the intellectual property of the art he made, does not belong to him, but to the team project. The artist will always have the copyright, but the intellectual property on the product of the work belongs to the team. If he leaves the team, would we have to remove all the arts he did? It makes no sense to me.
A contract protects the team from people like that.
In game jam it is common for you to work with people you have never seen in your life, never worked, you do not know the degree of maturity and commitment that the person has with the team, in a contract, the expectations of all members are aligned.
When a potential member does not agree to sign a joint work commitment, which is a voluntary work contract that each person is dedicating time to, the member is sending a signal that he / she does not want to make a commitment to carry out the work.
Even with people we know, we have problems, imagine who we don't know?
Anyway, thanks for the criticism and the comments you made, I believe we had a healthy discourse! ๐
@small fern
I feel we are not really understanding eachothers at all. I know the difference between contracts, IPs and copyrights. What I try to tell is that who on their right mind would waive their rights to the work they've done if they don't gain anything from it? (which would happen in that example if artist doesn't feel rest of the team is compatible). it's madness. Also how would you even do this on ue4 jam which has prizes. If your team won, you'd have to include every member who actually contributed to the final product, despite if some people left in the middle of the jam (if you still used their work in the final entry). And people who leave in the middle often leave because of the conflicts in the team, they might want to continue on their own and keep using the work they did for the entry, their own work.
and I don't get the revenue thing at all, unless you mean potential prizes
like mentioned before, if you plan to advance the jam entry into full game later on, that's the moment when you need to get serious, not before IMO
all that sounded to me was that you actually waste precious jam time for deciding what would happen after the game jam, when people are not necessarily committed to anything else but finishing the jam itself
what I struggle to understand here the most is that if we truly are talking about game jams, like bunch of people doing a jam entry in few days, what can that contract do to make those people finish and contribute to the project vs if they didn't sign the contract?
people who slack will slack regardless
I didn't read the contract tho, so if you have some fines etc there for breach of contract, that's even more questionable
I had the following situation, I took care of the management part, financial planning, marketing planning and part of the programming, 3 months game jam, with 3 weeks left to finish, the programmer and the artist joined in another project and left the team without giving satisfaction (I thought they had died, I couldn't even contact), there were no conflicts or problems, they just got excited about something else and abandoned it.
My time is precious, and I believe everyone's time is, although there may be some people who do not appreciate the time spent.
What would happen if I made the game pay money? Would you have to share it with members who abandoned the project in the final stretch? Would I need to change all the art in the project because the artist left the team?
How can I minimize and avoid the impact of members who do not want to commit to the development of the project?
so let me get this straight, that contract is NOT for game jam but time after it?
do you sign it before the jam ends?
like I've told all the time here, if you make actual game from the entry, then contract is a good idea
but I simply don't understand why you'd have one for the actual jam itself
also if the contract is as hard to understand as your messaging here, I'd advice against it
My dear, the contract is just a model to be used in any way the team desires, read: "Contract for development the team of individuals collaborative for the production of Digital Game", it can be for a game jam, it can be for any purpose that brings together people who are not going to receive a salary to work, and they want to invest their time in some game development project.
so, then I'd just return to my very first question, what does that has to do with game jams ๐
I agree with you that for a 48h-72h game, it's not really worth it, because the most you will have there is a prototype
if the game jam is 3 months, 1 year, it can be used, because you imagine dedicating 3 months, 1 year and not having a guarantee of anything
there are that long game jams?
the contract is very democratic, there are situations that provide for voting and approval only if 100% of the members agree
not 1 year, but 6 months yes, in this case it would be "marathon"
longest game jams I've seen have lasted one week/7 days
having longer period for jam entry isn't common at all
unless you mean something else by game jam than most people do
Just saying if someone wanted me to sign a contract for a game jam I wouldn't even consider joining them. And I've finished every game jam I've entered. Game jams are for fun. Afterwards if the team wants to go on and continue work then a contract wouldn't be a bad idea. That would be my take on it.
"6 month game jam" ๐ค I'm pretty sure that's just a project and not a game jam anymore
The longest jam I've ever seen is the GitHub Game Off, which lasts for 30 days.
"6 month game jam" ๐ค I'm pretty sure that's just a project and not a game jam anymore
@glass fossil yes, it is true, it would be a "marathon"
I think I expressed myself badly
@Deiverson Your contract model can be used for many group work purposes including "game jams" reason you posted in this server. Some people in here still try to stick your contract to the exclusive "game jam" usage and badly understand how easy all this is and that we need to be thankful that we all try to help each others in our on ways.
If you're not willing to use this contract for a "game jam" when it can, then don't use it. If you want to use this contract for "game jams" or any collaborative work, use it and be thankful.
I actually tried to read that contract now
yeah, it has definitely and 100% nothing to do with game jams
it's totally offtopic here
and as personal advice, if anyone tries to make you sign a contract like that, I'd recommend walking away or at least contact lawyer who will tell all the risks involved (which are huge, if you follow these terms you can end up working 6 months for someone and not get a dime + you waive your rights to your work if things go sideways). there's also some irony here as I highly doubt there have been any lawyers involved on writing that document in the first place considering the contents on it
you don't see this level stuff even on actually paid gigs. if you need NDA, make NDA, don't try to stuff the revenue split agreement with fines and stuff
I really didn't read the contract initially as I totally don't want to go legal mode for this type of nonsense but here I am apparently
I just wanted to know what some random contract had to do with game jams here
I'm sorry if this all sounds harsh, if you want to sign a contract like that, that's fine, just be aware of the risks.
also... you simply cannot use that contract with this information only.
contracts can also have their own copyright as well, so the person who came up with this document would need to give you permission to reuse it, in ideal case in form of license text instead of random comment on the discord (there's really no guarantee that person who shared this even have rights to this, we don't even know who the person is behind the nickname).
@north raft thank you! You managed to understand my goal, proposal! \o/
how or what value i would have to use to have like a pocket or button follow cloth simulation
@merry adder This isn't the best channel to get an answer on that. Try #legacy-physics or perhaps #animation!
If you have a question and aren't sure which channel to ask, default to #ue4-general. ๐
i did i just figured someone here knew since i got no response in Physics or general
Is this the right channel to find team mates and projects? I love to dip my toes in game jams and other short running projects, but I'm not a coder or modeler, my main background is project management so I would likely be more related to producer, designer.
People don't usually have the space/need for a dedicated project manager in game jam teams.
I did train jam last year with a producer. It was quite nice to be able to offload tasks such as coordinating with the audio team, recording VO, reviewing spelling and grammar, checking in with team members and shifting priority on tasks that were taking too long
I think what Bohrium is referring to is when the team wants to try and excel, they generally take a programmer or an artist if there's a max team size
fill the slot with dev skills to be more ambitious
fill the slot with management to be more happy
if you derive joy from pain the choice is always obvious
and I feel most repeat game jam participants derive joy from pain
Jokes are funnier when you're sleep deprived ๐คท
its like being stoned except it is your brain drowning in acetylcholine
er, adenosine
one of those builds up when you don't sleep
my doctor tried explaining this to me but I was too sleep deprived
I think having a producer in a game jam is really undervalued, or I'm just too bad at keeping a team in scope ๐
At least someone in the role of keeping up with check ins on how work is getting done, what the current scope is and being able to stop the team from going too ambitious
my immediate fear of having producer/product manager in jam is if the person wanting that task isn't qualified ๐
like, what if it's just some idea guy
I don't know how often that would happen
Well, Jams are how they get qualified, yeah?
but some people bail on jam teams either way
it's just harder to measure such performance if people don't know what to expect
It doesnโt help that thereโs this stigma around โthe idea guyโ. Someone keeping the team on track and focused on a narrow and achievable vision is incredibly valuable. You can absolutely do that as an artist or programmer, of course, but the more time youโre spending on people management, the less you are on programmers.
Sounds like the solution is solo dev!
for next jam, do also enter catering manager for who ever keeps the food and drinks coming during the jam ๐
sorry to hear that some of you never had a producer, that was actually a producer, but it's fair to say that you can review potential production team mate the same way as a potential coder or modeler team mate, by asking the right questions
they might not have a visual portfolio, but if he/she actual has project management experience, it can tell you about certain methods, check-in systems, visual management, perhaps even LEAN and PDCA, sprint cycles, etc etc ๐
ah, I didn't say that happened
a wannabe or faker that is nothing but a 'i can give feedback to whatever the rest of you come up with' -guy, will likely not be able to make a Gannt chart and actually hit deadlines
I know, I just want to lowkey clarify that I'm not a faker or wannabe ๐
oh I didn't try to suggest anything like that
was just thinking how that would/could go
similar to non-game dev projects, think of scoping, planning of each phase and activity based on individual availability/requirements/needs, keeping the different ideas into the same direction, keeping ego's in check (you might be surprised how much there is of this in the creative world), doing weekly/bi-weekly check-ins, recording the check-ins so you have 'meeting notes', plot deadlines/milestones etc etc, a producer basically makes sure that the artists can entirely focus on the art part and the coders on the coding, modelers on modeling, etc
don't get me wrong, it's not an isolated role, producers are very much involved and part of the team as any other, some focus entirely on the above, others (like me) enjoy learning what artists and coders do as it's fascinating, and enjoy being asked for feedback and opinion
Do any programmers have any tips on making good working code for game jams? For me I always feel like cracks start to show in my game jam code. I find it really tough to make good working systems in the short time.
Don't take coding shortcuts
You might get less done but over time you'll become faster at writing stronger cleaner code
whens the next megajam happening? ๐
spring
We're not doing a Winter Jam this year, but we have plans to organize a contest prior to the typical "Spring Jam" timeframe
so there's going to be Spring Jam and some contest prior to that but @tranquil matrix didn't specify more about that mystery event
I wonder if it's some contest they launch at GDC to promote some new feat on the engine
We got lucky with our producer/designer type dude, he had an actual track record outside of jamming ๐คฃ
I was hoping there would be one, so I could get myself a week off work to do something Unreal Engine related compared to throwing 3D models into Unity all day.
I really don't understand people using seasons instead of months lol
There is more than one country ;P
Imo "Unreal Spring Jam" has a better ring to it than "Unreal May Jam"
it's just it's held when it's actually fall on some countries :p
Ah its more that I have no idea when this 'spring' or anything really is
Its used as a timeframe without providing one to most of the world
Currently its summer
And for you its probably winter, maybe nearing the end.. so I can devise that spring isn't terribly far off, but thats about it
Not an issue, just annoying ๐

what is the next upcoming gamejam?
Sometime in the next few months. Epic hasn't announced the dates yet, but we'll let you know when they do!
@civic dock Thanks!
@dawn kindle There will be a Spring Jam, and we'd like to announce it within the next month
Great to hear ^^ i was kind of hyped up for winter jam ;p
really looking forward to next jam!
Yes, 4.25 will be released prior to the next jam
I need a jam to help with being cooped up because of the whole social isolation thing
I work from home anyways, so luckily I won't have to change much.
But I do think events like game jams will help others cope and stay connected, motivated, and having fun. ๐
My college decided to do online classes so I've got to get used to the transition of that
Corona jam ๐ค
Working from home has become pretty draining over the years @civic dock. How long you been doing it for? I've been on hiatus for 2 months without any end in sight. Biggest burn out period yet. Too bad I live in a country where working local means low pay and boring projects. I think it would help to be in that environment.
@loud basalt I've been working from home for most of the past decade, except for a few very short-term jobs here and there.
I wouldn't be able to participate in game jams without the freedom to work from home and adjust my own schedule as I see fit.
I'm still sulking that I couldn't submit my game in the last jam ๐ฆ
boohoo me
need the next jam to regain my confidence
@solid abyss I feel you. I didn't finish on time for the Epic MegaJam, either.
But I did create a fun concept that could be fleshed out someday.
Mine came along pretty fine as well, but remains unfinished because I lack the BP skills to finish it
learning BP now ๐
Anyone who wants to create an rts voxel video game??
@civic dock that's true. I like to go on road trips on a whim too which I couldn't do otherwise
ugh road trips make me car sick
@solid abyss I'd recommend looking through the templates/content examples first, then going through the epic-made blueprint series' (serieses?) on yt/ue4 learning center. When you feel ready, you should check out Tom Looman's course on udemy (usually around $10). The goal is to be proficient in c++, then expose your code to blueprints for game design.
thanks I will look into it
I have gotten comfortable with some BP at least now
Good thing that I have a C programming background .. so C++ is not that alien to me ๐
@dense cloud even when you're driving? I hate them as a passenger
Is C still a thing ๐ค what reason to use it over c++ or c#
@loud basalt C is still a thing, simpler than C++, a bit lighter - personally I don't have much reason to use it, but if you are in a really tight environment could be better, also much quicker to implement a C compiler for a new platform.
Main place I have been happy about it is a small external lib having a simpler C interface (perhaps even if written with C++)
many "purists" think c is the real thing and c++ ruined it with OOP everywhere
any engineer who remains a purist either maintains a compiler for a living or is simply annoying
leaves
yeah, I don't really see the need for elitism over specific programming languages
just use the one that does the job / is needed for the task
I really mean everything goes as long as it's not javascript, vbs, lua or python

Language elitism is the weirdest thing yet. Especially the Java people
Cmon, what's more hip than using a dead esoteric language like bequnge? the n-dimensional variant of befunge
https://web.archive.org/web/20170701063026/http://www.purplehatstands.com/bequnge
Thats nearly as elite as using Apple stuff!
Almost a shame it didn't catch on https://i.imgur.com/lulNCuJ.png
.... but perhaps n-dimensional blueprints would? ๐
any news on when the next UE4jam is? going crazy over here
The only thing we know is that 4.25 will come out before the next jam.
@uneven fractal There will be a Spring jam for sure, we're working out the details which is taking a little bit longer due to the new environment we all got thrown into. I don't want to give exact dates until they're locked down for sure, but mid-may is what we're aiming for!
ok good to know! can't wait ๐
No Corona isolation jam then
Even our inherently isolated island is on lockdown at this point
Hopefully by May I won't be on hiatus from burn out. Its already lasted over 2 months. Slowly getting the desire back ๐
There is a very nice Game Jam happening this weekend organized by some UE4 devs that is getting bigger and bigger:
https://www.staysafejam.org/
I will try to participate with a friend and help where I can. Maybe you want to check it out or spread the word. Some cool folks have already shown up like someone from the team that did Ori. A lot international folks. I would love to see more UE devs join and show how cool the engine is for such things. There is a vivid Discord and the jam itself is hosted on itch.
Stay Safe! Jam is about staying at home and being creative. In these days of the Corona crisis, everyone can do their part to improve the situation. Why not develop a game?
<@&213101288538374145> Is there a way to highlight this โ๏ธ or what is the proper way to boost visibility?
I pinned it, will poke @civic dock about maybe putting out a news post about it ๐
Thanks for the heads up. Taking a look at it now.
Sounds like a nice initiative. ๐
Yeah I'm definitely up for promoting this. In light of the Spring UE4 Jam being delayed, this could be a great opportunity for devs to who are working from home.
its on now
anyone know how the game jams work?
I've finishes my game and uploaded it to the platform. Being my first game I've finished and released, I'm not sure what I'm doing in regards to submitting it to the Jam. When I click on the "Submit
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MellowStudio.RPS
@plush pollen a trailer/demo video would be really helpful in showing how to play the game. The landing page looks interesting but it's not clear how to play and whether it would be interesting for me to play
Our submission to the Stay Safe Jam that took place last weekend
https://metagrafox.itch.io/semisolidarity
I think Spring jam could run, i mean UE4 jams are already pretty remote, people have more free time stack at home so there even demand for this kind of events, or else there problem with jurging logistics and/or rewards (which 2nd personally i dont mind them being reduced or not at all as long as i can have some UE4Jam fun ;p)
Hi all, never participated in a game jam but after checking out some of the previous events and submitted games it's pretty overwhelming I must say... Do you have any suggestions where I can find potential "team members" for any game jam? I think that would be the best way to get started.
@glass fossil on the next UE4 jam there will be a website called crowdforge which is used for finding teams
Hey how do I enter game jams?
@finite tinsel the UE4 jams are generally quarterly (spring, summer, mega) and then for general jams you can find them at: https://itch.io/jams
what is a game jam?
It's an event where you get a limited amount of time - usually 2-4 days - to make a game based on a given theme.
cool
A game jam from 2020-04-11 to 2020-04-20 hosted by Andrew The DEV. 1. Follow the theme. 2. Be original and unique. We want to see different ideas and let the developers let there mind go crazy 3. 3D or 2D games, both
Did they ever announce the winners of the the film jam contest?
@shut tendon Not yet, the judging process was delayed due to an issue that was out of our control unfortunately. However, they should be announced prior to the Unreal Spring Jam, which leads me to what I came here to say...
Save the date for May 14th - May 19th! We just locked down the dates for the 2020 Unreal Spring Jam ๐
Great news! Thanks for keeping us updated. โค๏ธ
Sweet!
oh great ^^ can;t wait
no one taking their jam games to steam? this is the only result for space cats
Out of this world cute, yet ferocious, the Space Cats Personalization Pack delivers a feline-filled weapon camo, custom reticle, patch, playercard and background.
$1.99
I hope so. Every Unreal jam has at least one game that could totally be fleshed out and sold on Steam.
we're reworking Cat Earth Society for steam ๐
Nice! Looking forward to seeing the final release. ๐
just saw tidbit about spring jam, I'm curious, how does it compare to annual megajams that happen at the end of year?
@steep needle Regular jams are usually shorter and smaller in scope than the MegaJam.
In the past it's been 4-5 days vs. the MegaJam's 7 days, and there are typically less prizes and award categories.
interesting, seems it changed quite a lot from what was few years ago, I remember there were monthly jams lasting 3 weekend days. Now it seems it's quarterly instead for 4-5 days
Compared to the old monthly jams, even the regular ones have much bigger prizes and seem to be a lot more popular. This was the last non-mega jam, I think. https://itch.io/jam/2019-summer-ue4jam
Anyone doing ludum dare?
yeah! itโs been going pretty well. posting progress on my Twitter: @mahalis
Hello guys :)
I am new to the unreal engine, recently started tutorials and practicing... Before doing so, I've read about a lot of ways to improve your game making skills and one of the recommended was doing game jams
But, as far as I have seen, there isn't many game jams, in comparison to game jams that are in Unity community...
Can anyone introduce me to some sites/groups, etc. that usually create game jams ?
Thank you in advance ๐
@low prawn Itch.io, the platform where Epic hosts the Unreal jams, has a calendar of all the other jams going on. https://itch.io/jams
Thank you
@idle mulch yup been learning a ton with UE
I remember there was a website for making teams, it was used for last megajam, anyone know how it was called?
It's called crowdforge, when the next jam is announced there should be a link to it
sweet, thanks

Hello everyone!
Wanted to let you know that my team is hosting our first digital Game Jam event in a couple weeks (May 8th), and we welcome anyone who'd like to join! It's a 72-hour challenge with cash rewards up to $2K for first place.
For details and to register, visit: http://kjam.io/
@tranquil matrix is it possible that the upcoming Spring Jam may be another "Marketplace Take over" jam like last year's?
or is it unlikely that kind of gamejam will be repeated in the future and just stay a one off thing?
@azure flicker It might happen again but this time thereโs no Marketplace takeover. Weโll have prizes from Marketplace though ๐
Details should be out next week
Iโm helping host my first itch.io game jam!! Come join me and the SDC community on May 1st for May Day Jam: a Weekend Jam Event! ๐๐ https://itch.io/jam/may-day-jam
@hard egret Who did the branding? It looks great. โจ
Thanks! It was one of our board members for SDC, https://twitter.com/bakedbreadjen
I think she was using Canva? I can't recall
When's the next game jam?
What does it take to but something on steam? I saw a live streamer buy a 200 dollar game that had 5 minutes of game play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRpwfxCgeOE&t=287s
This is the greatest steam deal of All Time
$100
@slate salmon May 14th to 19th, if you scroll up you'll see the unofficial announcement
more details (categories, maybe prizes) will be out next week
i couldn't resist looking it up on the unity store... they're basically selling this template for $200... https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/templates/systems/beat-em-up-game-template-3d-98013
I would be very surprised if anyone who got it as a joke didn't also immediately refund it.
Yeah for that dude YT streamer it was probably worth it for the views. This is a basic Double Dragon format. I remember Double Dragon being amazing when it came out because you could pickup the bad guys weapons.I think this was the first game that could do that.
hey.. when will the crowdforge page be up for the spring jam?
Probably when they announce the jam.
Crowdforge.io has been down for a while, not sure if we'll be able to use it for the jam
Has there been any more info about the Ue4Jam released?
Oh snap, someone finally went and did it. ๐ฎ
Definitely gonna play with that next week.
Still feeling pretty burnt out (3 months and counting), might sit next jam out. Keen to see what you guys come up with :)
Nice
hey. Gamedev tv started a game jam for 1 month. We are 3 devs and we are looking for some artists to join us. Thanks !
I actually managed to join first ๐
Short Notice. But, any #ue4jam is good. Well, I guess new name is #UnrealJam
VAX sub is probably one of the best random prizes I've seen in awhile
Well, only because I'm a programmer probably, but still. Good to see things oriented towards that side of dev.
damn @rigid fog would love to have been on your team for audio/ audio tech but heading out on a deployment very soon ๐ฆ
next time brother
That cover art for the jam is really nice
It sad to hear that crowdforge is down, but I guess its about time the JAM had its own page/system to replace crowdforge's thingy for recruitment
Dunno, it's something people have asked Itch countless times about
Im number 9 :>
Aah, stoked for another Jam!:D Hope there's a funky theme!
Can i use in game jam marketplace assets?
@exotic hare Yes but they don't add towards your score
sigh and I still can't do art
finding people capable of rigging / animating is going to be tough
Assuming you want it to look good
@sharp berry No idea what's going on with Crowdforge. They've been silent for some time and the site's been down for at least a week.
hey fellas, i think i wanna join this, i never did a gamejam before, but im an UE4 focused sound guy (Russian Punch Productions on YouTube) and i want to collab on projects. ๐ what is the right way to get in touch with others & figure out if we wanna work on a project together?
if i understand correctly, crowdforge was used for that?
@wary notch Crowdforge is unavailable, so we made #game-jam-lfg for that! ๐
does a sound and music guy count for the 5 member limit ?
i know that some jams have it that some musicians work on multiple projects
@dreamy mulch Yes sound guy counts, you can only be a part of one team
It's mostly a limitation due to the fact that we have prizes, and if you can join two teams you can technically win twice ๐คทโโ๏ธ
ah thanks for clearing that up (i dont actually do music, i was just wondering haha)
Definitely going to scope out 4.25 and see if there's any extra headroom I can add to Nano.
@minor hemlock Are you going to go for the Tiny award again?
I've got a 4.23 from last time that gets down to about 20Mb, but I don't know if it's worth the effort to cut it down much farther
That's way tiny. I'm guessing you used a source build to do that.
yeah
You can only go so far with a launcher build. ๐
one problem with the launcher build is that it includes several DLLs that 'have' to be there for it to run, but are never even used
Are they included for legacy/deprecated features?
no, they're just junk, PhysX has a few, as an example
@civic dock probably, since I'd also attempt solo dev!
Sweet. ๐
No artists to add space gobbling textures or audio
Heheh.
Contemplating doing editor assets only too for funsies
Will have to remember to tweak your template to account for that
Ah, because you'd need to turn on Show Engine Content right?
Yeah, something like that, it's set up to exclude editor content from packaging?
usually better to just migrate individual assets in that you want
I did one jam just using editor content - it is... limited
I can't recall what ended up being the verdict last time, was it ok to use executable packers like UPX?
And yeah, getting rid of that 7.3 MB PhysX DLL is a pretty big thing
I just completed a game jam yesterday and Iโm incredibly tired, it was my first game jam so I still enjoyed it but hell. I slept for 14 hours that night
I hope you didn't forgo rest during the jam. ๐
I am a rookie programmer, so I spent hours on something that couldโve taken ten minutes
I've been there!
I can program, but I don't have an engineering background so I tend to take longer for similar reasons.
Happens to everyone now and then, just less frequently the more experienced you get, nothing to beat yourself up over ๐
Good on ya for completing a jam!
I have friends that always try to figure stuff out themselves, I admit itโs a good way to learn, but when you have a time crunch on a game jam I probably made over 30 google searches ๐
I canโt type
Big part of getting better nowadays is learning how to google really effectively ๐
My words per second probably grew since I started lol
Yeah, I will say: congrats on shipping something. That is by far the hardest part.
@civic dock I can program and have an engineering background and it slows me down as I try to idiot-proof everything I write ๐
A shipped mediocre game is better than a great-but-unfinished project languishing in the archives.
You learn a lot more from it.
it's like exercise -- it never gets easier, you just get capable of more
Iโve never worked with multiple programmers though, like how do two people work on the same project? Is there a way two programmers can simultaneously work on a project?
it's messy. especially in a jam setting
I still donโt know how to use github, if I need to put a project on another computer Iโll usually just google drive it
You'll definitely want to learn some type of version control eventually, might be stressful to learn during a jam though, good thing to figure out beforehand
You have 8 days to learn VCS
._.
There's an official jam starting the 14th
Updated the channel topic with info on the next jam. ๐
I believe you can do that, unless Nvidia's rules specify otherwise
personally I'm submitting all my jam games for the next decade to Decade Jam
Yes, you need to start your project when the jam starts. Any assets created before the jam - such as Marketplace packs - must be listed in the submission form.
@minor hemlock lol. never heard of that until now
It's an interesting concept in theory...
But either a), your time is better spent trying to launch projects and make money
or b) if you're going to commit to something for ten years, it better be one hell of a game project with 10 years of hype
But, it's good for underage or hobbyists for sure.
there's no rule stating Decade Jam submissions can't be commercial ๐
submits entire previous game
i guess there's no fun allowed, everything you do as a hobby must generate income
if there's anything I've learnt from my hobbies, is that they make me fabulously broke
@dreamy mulch 10 year fun?
Also, if you generate income on something, it's no longer considered a hobby
And no one said that you can't have fun, or that you needed to generate income with hobby projects
guess it just to show u were rdy to party in 2016
silly character dance
Jeez...I remember that game
lol that wasnt a game
Well, at least those types of characters
that was a char contest
they all tend to look like that cus easy to make within an hour
make , rig and animate in 2 hours
now u have time left for other stuff
i could just copy a 30 hour rig in there and dont spend that 2 hours during the jam
all would look better
last jam they announced they special category : Cats in space or something a month B4 the jam started and main theme was : Down to earth
when i have my 2 hour rig in running.. other ppl have projects with fully rigged cats running with lazerz on spaceships
how fucked is that?
yeah pre-announced extra theme was a bit of a weird move
almost encourages people to work before the jam
yea and combining main theme on top of that
sorry but i dont play that game
this wil resonate cheatin is allright for jams to come
No such theme this time though right, so hopefully it was a one-time test type of thing
4.25 builds is yet again even larger, gonna be hard to motivate not going back to a previous version when going for small size :/
4.25 niagara with sound integration kinda spicy though ๐ค
also great that it actually compiles, but with FProperty changes, some plugins might not be available ๐ EpicLeaderboards ๐
Still trying to decide if I have the energy to do a jam ๐
@loud basalt You can do it
nobody said that you have to go full on ham for a jam, it can be little something you work on every now and then during the 5 days. but really its up to you ๐
Yup, you sure can.
I can relate, I was the only programmer in the team for ludum dare 46 and I could literally feel life flashing before my eyes during the last day ๐
I can't stop stressing about it if I'm not working on it
come to the dark side Vaei
Can someone clarify the end date for the jam? 3 different dates lol
probably 19th is the correct one, afaik it's a 5 days jam, but better to summon @tranquil matrix ๐
@turbid timber The scrubbed information from itch pulls the start date and until the judging period is over. That's unfortunately out of our control - For the news post I think @civic dock thought of this jam being 7 days just like the Epic MegaJam, however it's 5. The correct dates are 14-19 as listed in the itch.io details ๐
Sorry about that! I updated the announcement.
110%
Anyone looking for a member to join a jam team?
I posted in #game-jam-lfg and I've gotten a few replies from people also LFG.
I assume the intensity will increase as we draw closer to the start
yes, and also posting a portfolio of whatever you have done in the past helps
Wonder when we'll get swag from mega jam. When covid19 dies probably? ๐
All I know is the game jam is a complete waste of time. That is exactly what I need right now! ๐คฉ
I'm in!
lfg has been a bit quiet, so hopefully it will pick up. As usual there's a shortage of arty type people
It would be good perhaps if mods prescribed a sample format .. for those posting in LFG chat
I'm not good enough for a team yet. I'll just be doing some childish solo project again ๐
The only way to get team experience is on a team :)
Itch page seems to be gone? ๐ค
@minor hemlock probably. It would be easier if I could look ahead and see how much time I will actually get to work on it. I just dont want to be slowing anyone down
Yeah, the jam page is gone for me too
Oh wow, same for me. I'll investigate.
F
Exactly wen my partner asked me for a link , im like "The page is down" (0_0) and he is like "Ok if there is no jam there is no jam" XD
yeah down for me as well
@tranquil matrix did they cancel the jam? ๐ซ
That's kinda weird. Maybe they are updating it? Not sure why they would bother cancelling it after announcing.
No word yet on what's going on.
I'm not sure why they would bring it private to update it, though.
Maybe a big surprise reveal?
Hopefully it's just not because they didn't get as many people signed up (as they hoped for) in a certain amount of time.
hmm, I hope not... because a lot of people are still under lockdown, and things like making games together does lift up the mood for many
cancelling it would have the opposite effect..
@rigid fog I'm sure that isnt it. Probably get a LOT of entries with everyone working from home.
Victor's announcement post is still in the forums so I feel better
2020 Unreal Spring Jam
It's time for the 2020 Unreal Spring Jam!
Head over to the itch.io page for details and sign-up. (http://itch.io/jam/2020-unreal-spring-jam)
AWARD CATEGORIES
The 2020 Unreal Spring Jam will feature three finalist teams, and three modifie...
We had to postpone the jam, working out new dates ASAP. Apologize for the inconvenience, we'll have new dates really soon.
Thanks for the update. I hope all is well with the team at Epic.
Thanks Victor. Yeah I too hope that everyone is doing okay & are safe.
Nooos, that's too bad:<
Hello! We hope you are all staying healthy and safe. This is an announcement in case you want to enter the "Droolon Cup" eye-tracking VR content development contest where more than $80,000 worth of prizes await.
It is a competition for VR developers organised by 7invensun, co-organized by HTC and with technical support from NVIDIA. In this contest you are expected to combine an HTC VR headset and the Vive Eye Tracking SDK to develop VR eye-tracking applications. 7Invensun is the company behind the eye tracking modular kit Droolon F1 that is compatible with all HTC headsets and will provide free Droolon F1 kits to selected teams.
Here is the contest website with more information: https://www.7invensun.com/hd
Droolon Cup
I kinda wonder why it had to be postponed though
I mean even if the live stream for theme announce is difficult right now, I'm pretty sure most jammers would be totally fine to get the theme announcement even without the stream, just post it online on the jam page & forums once the jam starts ๐
It probably has nothing to do with the live stream. More likely related to sponsors considering the circumstances.
could be
that wouldn't be issue either if the prizes only got revealed when announing the winners
which I'd prefer regardless the circumstances
might be more related to stuff like Assembla not having staff on hand to hand to repos etc
looks like that would make a great VR game!
Hello, what happend to the jam ?
@hidden lotus it had to be postponed due to undisclosed reasons
@azure flicker Thanks!
@small fern agreed, but I also feel like they should give only 1 big prize and a lot of swag packs lol
Hopefully the jam is ready after my exams
yeah, I'd like if it were more like game jam instead of content its turned out to be ๐
having less fancy prizes would help there
less fancy prizes, and less emphasis on art being the deciding factor on winners would be nice
(not that a lot of the winning games haven't been undeserving, but the art does always seem to be the most important factor they consider)
I guess less pretty games don't look good for the publicity element
We all just want the swag packs eh ๐
reciever exists
Send a swag pack to every participant!!
Make Victor write letters all day long!! ๐
@maiden loom Yeah winner from last jam had a purely art-based theme connection ๐
Entire game could have been premade (observation not accusation) - and sort of was, since it didn't really have anything (besides art) the engine doesn't give you from a template.
I actually avoided character stuff because its so common and the engine gives you so much, and felt like I got punished for going outside the box or making my game from scratch because it says to me that if I had made a character based project (basically my specialty) I would have gotten a lot more recognition ๐คทโโ๏ธ
It would be cool to see game mechanics and feel play a bigger part yeah
am I the only one who feels that the channel topic should be updated
since we are tagging people,@civic dock ^
now gamejam what ๐ฆ
@sudden totem Still happening
What if... Victor wanted to give us jammers EOS access, so we could test our games there ๐
would be nice if we can get a little more notice on the announcement than the previous one (some of us have to book time off work)
yeah that would be great, I had booked a day off this weekend just hoping it'd be the usual "2nd thursday" schedule, the earlier you can announce the better ๐
With EOS out we can finally do proper multiplayer entries without region gymnastics with Steamworks
or exposing IPs
maybe they postponed it due to UE5 and the jam will be ran on UE5 ๐
This would mean no MegaJam this year ;p
Nanite Jam.
If one were to start looking at the EOS to play around with making something small networked, where would be the best way to start? (are there any good tutorials?)
Would be really fun if it's easy enough to implement on a Jam timeline, never dared networked games for jams before
It technicly should be same way as stream
as OnlineSubsystem is a common interface
ofcorse oyu won't have Advance stream plugin as it was made specific for Steam
OnlineSubsystem was amde exacly do game will work with any online service without changeing the code or just little bit of it
There is tons of information about EOS on the doc pages https://dev.epicgames.com/docs/services/en-US/
Documentation for Epic Online Services
Is it chances its postponed until Jun ?
seems more likely than not, at least June
Any game jams coming up?
epic's is on hold, but will come eventually, other jams, you can check there https://itch.io/jams @random radish
Ayy than I can join after my exams if its in June
Yeah there's something wrong on the backend with itch, it seems. I gave the folks at Epic a heads up.
@rigid fog hurry, looks like an easy win ๐
Since it is 16 May now, so I guess it wouldn't be correct to call it a 'Spring' Jam right? The order for this year should be called (imho) Summer (upcoming JAM), Autumn (the usual July Jam), Mega (November) & Winter Jam (January-Feb)?
Yeah, wondering about that too. The name might have to change. We'll wait and see. ๐
spring doesn't end for another 5 weeks
it's still snowing here every other day.. so ๐
Yeah it's autumn here ๐
I'm pretty use to irrelevant seasonal themes thanks to the internet and America haha
I guess I'm not a big fan of them though, for that reason
Embrace the international community and find better themes ๐
...and stop organising them over major religious holidays, they did that a few times
Lets name it 'Be Glad that you even have a JAM' ๐ (kidding)
@solid abyss Found you
@loud basalt I'm afraid for once the americans are not to be blamed
this is how seasons are in the whole northern hemisphere
...Yes, but the seasons didn't choose the themes.
so any idea on why the jam was canceled?
5g towers
Hey everyone!
"A Game to Save the World" is a Game Jam hosted by TAIKAI, to create a digital or an analogue game that educates people around the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Application and participation are open until 31st of May.
More info here: https://taikai.network/taikai/challenges/game-to-save-the-world
anyone participating on weekly game jam 150?
@autumn abyss I am
Hey folks! The Spring Jam is back. New details posted in #unreal-news. ๐ฅณ
#hype
"The winner of the Army Of One category will receive an Unreal Engine-branded Falcon Northwest PC."
Alright, 500 solo entries it is ๐
Sigh
Just saw that
I kinda wish they hadn't posted that prize so early
Team Finalist Prize this go-around is so lopsided
yeah, it's warped
@tranquil matrix June 18th livestream - So you're able to get through the games in 9 days now? You all come up with a new system to play and judge or something?
plus it's less than two weeks away
Well, my problem has always been the same. By announcing prizes or themes (especially that cat modifier one last time), it motivates people to cheat.
having only a major prize in one category will massively disincentive people to participate as a team
I know we've seen some Day 1 submissions that were clearly games that have been in development previously submitted in Unreal Jams before.
having only a major prize in one category will massively disincentive people to participate as a team
@maiden loom Maybe it's there way of doing "social distancing" rofl
COVID - The Team Killer
IMHO, if they couldn't get a major sponsor to cover something for the other categories, then the prizes should just have been kept simple (I'd have preferred that anyway)
Hmm, nah
You may not have been around back in the good old unreal jam days
But Participation skyrocketed when big prizes came
I've been here forever
Also, they have Fortnite money now
Fortnite $ = more to spend on engine marketing / community building
and it's true that participation is pretty large when there are prizes, hence why practically every game used the Space Cats theme last time around, since it was basically a free roll on the prize table
But, by giving big prizes like this Tiki in reg jams
Almost feels like MegaJam is just another regular jam
it basically is now that the normal jams are 5 days
I think I'm going to sit this one out. I wouldn't be able to compete in the army of one category, but by comparison it feels like a wasted effort to concentrate on the others
having only a major prize in one category will massively disincentive people to participate as a team
@maiden loom you're right, they should just send it to the army of one winner from the previous jam ๐ ๐
I think the prizes should be more evenly distributed with category winners more equivalent to 1/2/3rd place winners
@rigid fog I'd be keen for an unreal themed Ducati Panigale V4 ๐
Just slap one of your swag bag UE4 stickers on one
You guys are silly. ๐
Even though I have better chances winning the lottery, it's still cool they can keep up giving away this monster rig to 1 lucky person ๐
Wonder why they kept the spring jam name
I mean, it's in summer
these don't even need to have season prefix
re: computer going to army of one, it's actually more fair now as rest got huge advantage + half of the entries are army of one anyway
I feel they've favored big teams in past way too much
that being said, I'd just raffle the computer among all the winning teams, including teams on modifier cats
I saw someone in another channel mention they couldn't find the UE4 game jam toolkit, here is a few resources that might be helpful:

I mean, it's in summer
@small fern it's spring. First day of summer is the 21st.
raffling the computer feels most fair to me too, tbh
you can see the impact the prize distribution has had just from the lfg channel ๐
@maiden loom I guess you can think it that way (for me it's always from 1st June)
(yes I'm aware of the different official ways of looking at the starting date ๐
more reasons to not call it spring jam :p
The summer solstice is on June 20 this year, actually.
And what different ways do you mean? There's only one summer solstice.
so schools should call it spring holidays? ๐
That depends on the school. There's no standard start/end dates for what we call summer break.
but they do all tend to be at the beginning of summer
And regardless, school's don't dictate the seasons.
I honestly don't remember when exactly my summer breaks started. ๐ค
there is no such thing as "meteorological summer"
it's usually in the middle of this month
@maiden loom ignoring it doesn't make it go away ๐
like, you can accept it's a thing, like probably half of the globe uses it to define summer
or deny it
I've never heard it called that, but yeah, it's like a "cultural" summer. It's not the actual summer, but a window defined simply for the sake of convenience.
And I think that's fine. To each their own.
But it does cause confusion, hence this conversation. ๐
Coz I need someone to carry me
@loud basalt If you were a cute princess.. I would have carried you .. ๐ญ .. oh well..
Okay, so I'm not sure if it's on purpose or not but there is absolutely no mention of swag packs ๐ฆ
Which is really the only thing I would actually really really want to win...
I'm pretty sure swag packs are still a thing, just neglected to be mentioned for some reason
it would be unusual for there not to be a load of branded odds and ends lying around at Epic ๐
@loud basalt If you were a cute princess.. I would have carried you .. ๐ญ .. oh well..
@solid abyss are you sure I'm not ๐ค๐
Guys, I feel like they may make this another .marketplace takeover ๐
Because army of one. We can focus purely on the game
you guys talking about the 2020 unreal sping jam?
yup
@rugged plaza nah, I literally asked it's up in this very chat, it's not a marketplace takeover
besides it's not stated in the game jam page, last time it was clearly stated as soon as the page was up and part of the logo
I think the mean figuratively; the large number of solo entries is liable to make it seem like a marketplace takeover jam
Just do the programmer art, it's great.
But don't forget
All art assets in the game must have a material other than "DefaultMaterial" applied to it.
Re: Swag - We don't know when we'll be back working from the office again, so we're unfortunately not able to promise swag-packs for this jam :/
Same reason why there's see no hardware other than the PC - we ship this out of the office which we can't do atm.
Understandable. I think for many of us the idea of swag has always been very enticing, more so than the more expensive rewards for some, so if at all possible I think people would appreciate the possibility of swag even if it ended up being heavily delayed ๐
aye, I had already assumed that prizes would have been delayed since the situation is different in every country and not everyone can even receive anything right now
I'd still raffle the PC between all the winners or something, feels better than the solo category having a prize worth 20 times the rest ๐
@tranquil matrix the epic mega jam swag is still coming, just some point in the distant future? :)
@loud basalt Yes, it was very unfortunate that the T-shirts arrived the week that we started working from home :/
๐ hope you guys survive this. Sad time to have Trump
I currently have no ETA on when we'll be back, but rest assured that I want them shipped as soon as we are.
NZ eliminated the virus, we're close to moving to alert level 1 which is just international flight restrictions
Oh no rush there
It's all very understandable!
I don't think anyone would fault you ๐ฌ
This whole thing ruined far bigger plans than some random items :)
@maiden loom I have to disagree, I do see how the way the prizes are lined up can be discouraging to individuals who want to work in a team, but here is what I think
there is only one pc being given away, if it were to be raffled between the members of the winning teams, the criteria under which the most valuable prize is being given would purely be on luck
by giving that prize to the winner of the solo category instead, then it can be assigned based on merit, which cannot be really be properly assessed when looking at team project where you cannot really tell how much each member contributed
plus having to work solo add a new layer of challenge which I'd argue justify the prize, and finally many countries are in lockdown which means people are less likely to work in a team during this period
winning a category is still on merit
I would also assume that most teams actually work online anyway
for epic jams at least
aye, for other jams mileage may vary
but I'd prefer it to be raffled in that manner if there is only one; it allows people with specific disciplines to still compete and doesn't discourage teams
RIP sound guys ๐
^^ The epic jams are the only jams I haven't won the sound category for lol
Both sides of this argument seem valid to me. There are pros and cons either way.
I think the only reasonable solution is for victor to wear all the shirts of the potential winners on the announcement livestream
Yes. Let us vicariously swag through you, Victor.
I'm not sure the internet would survive looking at so much swag ๐
Can someone make a 3D model of Victors dog that we could all use for the jam? ๐
"Victor's Dog Jam"
I would love to make a game and make the dog randomly appear in the background, like we see on the livestreams ๐
earth dogs v space cats
If they make the theme "quarantined" I'm gonna start a riot.
You're in luck, the theme is "Start a Riot"
@vernal stratus
epic jams are the only jams I haven't won the sound category
At least you had a good reason.
To riot?
@vernal stratus Is that true for the theme? I thought they would only announce the jam theme a day in advanced or something. You are talking about the spring jam right?
nah, just a joke lol. Will be announced on the stream on thursday
next week thursday
OK
@vernal stratus Also, I saw your post in the game Jam channel. Aside from modelling, I do have some good level design experience as I did some modding of Unreal Tournament during my school and have built my own levels in the past....
I also have some decent blueprint scripting experience...
Is it allowed to use marketplace assets in the jam?
If it's the usual rules then yes but you need to disclose them
what are the chances of the theme being "Set the theme" ๐ฅด
i could try do the math
Quick question about the 100MB tiny award: Is it 100MB unpackaged or like 100MB for the .zip/.rar
100MB as a packaged, installed game (not zipped)
So hard with unreal when a lvl with a cube is like 80MB, I should probably check out some reduction settings in packaging
it's tricky, but totally doable, there is also a guide somewhere in the official docs
Yeah, I've gotten a game down to 60 MB so it's very doable. And there are people who've gotten it even smaller
Pfist made a small project template: https://github.com/polymoon/Nano
Has anyone tried to get under 100 MB with 4.25?
Not yet. Has something changed?
I've tried with Nano and also removing more plugins, but the lowest I could get was 109
Interesting. I've been meaning to test Nano against 4.25 to see if the sizes changed, or look for new opportunities to reduce it.
Which packaging config got you 109?
I was as brutal with chopping features as possible ๐
But still Windows 64-bit
Shipping build
Shipping 64-bit has never gotten below 100MB, unfortunately.
Out of the box, Nano reaches 116MB with Shipping 64.
Still much smaller than Epic's blank template, but yeah.
The only way Nano can go below 100MB for 64-bit is by removing the prereqs installer.
As of the last benchmarks, at least.
Oh 109 is with the prereqs installer unchecked
Oh my.
That should be hitting 76MB. ๐
I'll take a look at it this weekend. Meaning to anyways since the Spring Jam is coming up.
I'll be interested to see what you can do
I'll keep you guys posted.
64-bit can be cut down to about 40MB, but you need to be absolutely ruthless. 4.25 does not support 32-bit.
Because the jam was postponed are we still able to sign up for the 2 month Houdini trial? I just came across this jam today.
Empty build is more than 100 megs on 4.25 EGL version. You could take a risk and disable plugins and blacklist engine assets, and slim it down to 90 megs or so. It's enough to make a decent little 3D game. Unfortunately, just by using UE<=4.24 you could easily get 50 MB of space for content.
Oof. Good thing I already have a Tiny Award trophy
you can prolly still get the houdini trial, but but its a bit of a hard learn on short time
if you never used it
I won the year long license and I haven't used it, because I haven't taken the time to learn it. Can't just jump in there
mayB if u know hlsl or whatever they use
i wanted to put a kill time on my particle and there was no checkbox it was like x-y"">4
or something
other than that i bets its kinda cool
you can still just use the prefabs but thats basically like using assets
Houdini can do so many cool things though, looking at the demo videos
