Looking for a Houdini channel if there is one.
Thanks. ๐ Managed to come right.
Even Houdini-er would be the Think Procedural Discord!
this cover reminds me of the title being a rephrase of "a song of ice and fire", and the cutout of the cowboy like a photoshop selection.
Yeah
It was meant to be a reprhase
I made the cowboy on stylus
and we all know you made a cheap rip-off. he he
Hey all! I'm hosting Care Jam 2021 and a few of our teams need programmer support. Anyone interested? Please feel free to DM me referencing this message and I'd be happy to share the jam link for more info ๐
yeah, i get the vibe that lazy ones did not start working hard right from the start ;-/
Any gamejams going on right now? I'm losing motivation hard these last weeks and could something short and fresh
Oh itch has a useful jam tab
Hey all - i'm an audio person (creative, technical, programming) and everyone seems to want to use unity to jam but I much prefer Unreal in basically every way. I particularly want to improve my native and wwise implementation, and I love adaptive music and procedural sound design. I've taken December off to work on personal projects so if anyone's doing a jam in the next few weeks and wants some of that let me know!
hi so did some one know where i can found a complete lip syns tutorial on ue4 ?
You should see some of the commits on our actual (non-jam) project

Heya! I'm hosting Care Jam 2021 which starts on Thursday this week. Our teams are looking for more folks. Let me know if you'd like a link and I'll DM you ๐
Oh thank you I appreciate the heads up, but I joined the secret santa one already but i'll keep it in mind ๐
I did some googling and it seems like a interesting focus for a game jam event

So, considering our beloved @simple garden has a !gameidea command that generate game idea to varying degree of fresh to straight up wacky, should we have a relaxed game jam (as in no valuable prize at stake and long submission deadline) where the gist of it is to make game based on Manny's !gameidea suggestions? The only rule would be to include screenshot of Manny's response to the command.
<@&213101288538374145> sorry for the ping but nitro scam ^
Thanks! Bot missed this one
This could be really fun. Thanks for reminding me. I'll consider it for next year!
<@&213101288538374145>
Hey folks! Happy new years.
I am looking for some Game Jams that are upcoming. Anyone have any they would like to shout out?
Not that particularly noteworthy nor allow for UE4 games in itch.io at the moment
When is the next jam (GGJ aside)? It is pretty hard to find groups that want to work in UE.
in the small chance you don't know this, itch has a page that tracks gamejams could be useful https://itch.io/jams
idk about unreal tho
Well, I found this game jam for Unreal: https://itch.io/jam/creating-a-game-on-unreal-engine-4. There's only one person who joined tho lol.
Someone is going to participate on GGJ this year? I am in Montreal Game Jam site but not found a team to work with Unreal4/5 yet.
I'm going to join the kick off at the Seattle gathering. They are doing the 28th -30th timeframe.

got it, thanks - got missed by the ban cleanup
Finally released our Epic MegaJam submission to AppLab! Man, the two-month waiting period is tough.
Learned tons of stuff during the store submission process, and already working on the next game.
Did anyone else end up releasing their megajam game or is still working on it?
Game jam game idea for offline?
Any recommendations for a good version control to use with Unreal for this game jam ?
not really, the available ones all their problems. Epic should really provide a solid source control solution, as most teams even cant get past that hurdle
git is good

I've never done a gamejam before. Are you suggesting that Itch.io normally just doesn't ally UE4 used in jams? (I was looking through past ones and struggled to see any mention of UE4 in the looking for teams threads)
Thanks for the update! I've done a little research and found more interesting game jams. and some that looked more like product placement than a jam. I might try the Brackeys next month.
We made this game in 48 hours as a team of 4 for Global Game Jam 2022, I would love you all give it a try https://globalgamejam.org/2022/games/neon-mirror-4

Hello! Any upcoming game jams?
Make sure to keep this in mind
super useful ๐
there's a big one coming in 7 days from brackeys
How do you even make a start in a game jam? I've never done one because I'm too scared because I don't know anything about games and I'm worried I'd just let the team down
ye i thought about both of those but which would work but i feel like having a team or at least someone else to do it with me would help motivate me. seems like a catch-22 but.. idk im interested but nervous
ye true. maybe ill see about trying to do one. i dont have a ton of time to contribute though which i guess is another factor for me

Looking for Team Members for the Brackey Game Jam that lasts for a few more days. Theme is: It is not real. Idea: Youre a kid fighting of Monsters, I will either prototype around this Idea more mechanic wise: Parents are involved or different ways on how to use the weapon. However - Im more then happy if anyone Joins and has better Ideas to make it work. In general im looking to make this small scope but rather polished and working than sth ambigious. If youre interested DM me
I'll keep it in mind ๐
Hello folks, Im currently in the last stages of my prototype for the Brackeys Game Jam but it feels like theres still sth off with my mechanics. So if anyone got some Time to give it a quick playtest - that would help. Especially feedback on the lightswitch mechanic would be appreciated - it feels super nice to switch worlds - but currently its poorly balanced with the ressources and is not fun on its own - im thinking of either having the player collect batteries inside the environment for the lamp/switch or you can pull traps from the other world ( by world I mean, lit room - dark room ) - but maybe you have other good ideas too about it to make the game feel more fair. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16zpeVhtfamnpcNGyzpNRrdyowqtOaJuc?usp=sharing ( 300mb ) Cheers

FRIENDLY REMINDER, DON'T PARTICIPATE IN EPIC GAME JAMS, THEY WONT PLAY YOUR GAME AND YOU'LL HAVE WASTED 7 DAYS OF YOUR TIME. YOU'RE WELCOME
ImagineGameJams
I am ssooo confused
They've commented on some details of a couple of my submissions that weren't in the video footage - not sure how that could have happened if they didn't play the game.
There are sure some imperfect things about the jams, but for me its more "there is not a score sheet with ~15 words of feedback/thoughts from judges" rather than "didn't play the game" (and community seems to cover feedback fairly well)
I didnt say they dont play any games, but it sure seemed selective... i had Allar play my game for 2 hours, and i didnt even get a mention of my game in the honorable mentions like
wut?! I know im not the only one though
I know they didnt play it.. i had space cats, multiplayer, made it alone.. again, im not doing it again, wasted 6 1/2 days for nada
Until some thing changes at least like you said, some feedback like
Hey your game didnt make cause.... reason 1, reason2 , or it did because reason 1 reason 2
And not , we loved this game because the maker DM'd Victor to play it
Ahem
@hidden flicker Whether it is worth it or not depends on what your goal is. Mine is just to see what I can do in a week.
It's still quite a claim to say they didn't play it.... Feels much more probable that of the hundreds of submissions, it was in the top ~5%, but not the top ~2% that get an award/mention.
Personally I will still be taking part when I have the time, even if the judges don't provide feedback. Strongly suspect no score/feedback is provided to avoid a torrent of complaints
(I can imagine a huge number of complaints like WTF, my game got 3/5 graphics, but this worse looking game got 4/5 - this really can't be actually measured, as it's subjective)
fair enough
doubt it, people on allars & shadowrivers live stream had accused me of cheating (re-using some game i had made before or something) from how good the game looked/mechanics wise.. but... we'll never really know
This one? https://imaginegames.itch.io/ready-for-the-world It has some interesting depth, and some cool custom-looking graphics (those space cats). Downside to me was music, some art felt weird/unfitting, gameplay was not of interest to me
I thought I had a really solid entry (for the same jam I think) - https://chozabu.itch.io/getting-downtoearth-with-chozabu - IIRC everything made during the jam except the music and some sound but didn't get a mention that year.
but really, rather than thinking the judges didn't play the game... it's more likley they just ranked other games higher. There were some super-solid entries, solo and from teams - games are really subjective art, there is also some luck involved as to how highly each aspect of a game ranks with any judge
dont forget the voice acting also lol
Yep - that's a plus point for sound for sure.
but yeah maybe they just hated it lol
like ah this shit is lame, NEXT
you never know
having to judge what was like 600 games or something
i can imagine patience wearing thin
but
i can also imagine skipping games
like, meh this looks lame lets not play it
i remember when Victor Burgos was a streamer* for one of the jams, he was awful, cause he hadn't slept and he was cranky and you could tell
and he was just destroying games
I can imagine them doing that, but reckon they give them all a chance.
Shadowriver was giving (nearly) all games a go in a day or two, they take more like a month to judge
haha, victors stream was fun, I remember him encountering a flip-flop puzzle when particularly sleep deprived ๐
for some reason i feel a little less annoyed about all this, from all the attention you've given my comments lol
its only been like what, 4 years lmao
That said, I still can't see why my game for that jam wasn't more popular ๐
I mean, cmon, it's "getting over it with bennet foddy" - but in VR! ๐คฃ
snap ๐
that could be exactly it tho... they were like.. its getting over it... but in VR, you may see it as like boom, awesome.. and they may see it like meh... just like me(regarding my game thinking its awesome)... i think perspective is a mutherfucker, everyones got a different one, sometimes its hard to understand a completely different point of view
we are like, why cant they see it like I do
Trying to critique my own game... not most creative use of theme, sound was somewhat limited, some cool bits of code for controlling impact/scrape sounds, but prepackaged music.... gameplay is also somewhat unoriginal, and not of interest to everyone
i thought my theme usage was the MOST original though, because you are literrally heading down to the north pole of earth, AND its a kids game, what could be more "down to earth"
but...
maybe "the genious" is only apparent in my own perspective
I tried to do a twist on use of theme, going down to earth, but having it up in the game.... in retrospect it does not quite make sense - and perhaps literal interpretations are not the most creative.
lol
yeah i remember you're earlier ones with portals and gravity shifting those were pieces of art.. i didnt play this one so i cant say... i was more burnt out after these 6 days that i was just like.. man... why do i do this
i take it too serious
Yeah, If a job is a Skyrim, where you have one awesome character who wins... a jam is more like a RougeLite where you get many attempts, and often get it is dark, you are eaten by a grue - but get some more practice, and a better chance of beating the odds next time
thinking about it... I only sometimes enjoy rougelites... recently got fustrated with Nuclear throne, memhacked it for infinite health, had some guilty satisfaction in completing it, then uninstalled the thing
my funnest game jam was the first one where we were hella proud, Allar interviewed us and all , made us feel super official.. and then someone in the chat was like... but... you cant have animal cruelty... it seemed really unfair because We didnt really have animal cruelty, i mean besides all those ragdolled dead bunnies that didnt make the escape and were covered in gore and blood as they fell down a trash grinder
nuclear throne was a lot of fun for a couple of days, i never take roguelites serious after i realize im addicted to them
try Rogue Heroes, pretty fun too, the difference in it is you get to keep building a town and evolving it
For the purposes of jam rules, wonder if animal cruelty counts humans as animals....
One of my fave rougelites was EverSpace - had the "many attempts" tie into the story well too. Will give Rogue Heroes a go! Looks particularly tempting with the co-op aspect
What is the world coming to when you can't throw bunnies into a trash grinder?!
hey maties any pixel art geeks here ? ^-^
just dm me

๐ญ You have no idea how much effort, time, patience, and love it takes to stream everyone's games for MegaJam, I wouldn't be so dismissive of people who take the time to do it ๐
Sleep depravation is OP. Still, you know a game is good or bad, if you can still have fun with sleep deprived.
Well, there definitely came a time where they were running out of bandwidth, which is when they started going from monthly jams (which I sorely miss), to quarterly ones. But now... I have no idea how many jams there are, just one now? MegaJam?
As the prizes got bigger, the number of submissions (quality or not) skyrocketed. Now, how they decide to trudge through all those games is a mystery.
But yeah, there's no doubt, I am super cranky when I don't get a lot of sleep ๐
Fuck he found me lmao.... you looked like you were not enjoying tho my man. And not just our game, but like most games
Not meaning to rib you about it man, just having fond memories of the event ๐
I'd like to take this chance to thank you for doing your stream! I agree it seemed like you were having a hard time, but I was very glad to see someone else checking out all the games, I would indeed have a hard time finding the energy to do it. Very glad to be able to curl up under a blanket by the fire with a cup of cocoa and watch you trying them out
(I Also have great appreciation for shadowrivers streams, and the community rating sheets, had some good insights sorting by different metrics, seeing what games are considered to have good graphics created in such a short period, etc)
truth yeah, have to give thanks to the people that put in the time to play these games, regardless of how it turned out
The monthly jams were great. Didn't take much commitment and felt like just a fun way to spend a weekend. I haven't even had the energy to watch all of the playthrough streams of the bigger ones.
Does anyone know what is going on with the game jams?
Odds are they're waiting with the next Jam to be after Ue5-release?
I would expect the next Unreal jam to be a MegaJam sometime after summer.
someone here has cursed me with an un-removable notification icon ๐
i wish you many unknown discord pings and beeps, whoever it was
right click, mark as read, notification goes away, comes back lol... and its like this on all my devices
fuck thats genious
"Genious" not sure if joke.

ue5 game jam when?
yepp, here is our entry https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/floody-hell
Cool, I'll check it out
So Ludum Dare allows for using preexisting engine? I thought LD is just for games made from scratch
Ludum Dare has two different modes, compo and jam. Compo is more restrictive (solo, 48 hours, create game and content yourself, and you must release your source/project files afterwards) and jam is more relaxed (72 hours, teams allowed, etc...).
AFAIK for both, you can opt out of a category for judging, e.g., if you want to use CC-BY music that's OK as long as you declare it and opt out of judgement for music, etc...
In either case you can use a framework/existing engine, but if doing the compo you are expected to share it if it's something you'd had before (this doesn't apply to e.g., the UE source as anyone else could have access to the same thing under the EULA, but if you'd made your own set of libs on top you wanted to use, that'd be expected to be released as part of your compo entry). Jam entries don't have the same expectations/requirements
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/rules <-- has some info about the source code expectations
but yeah, there's lots of Unity and UE entries every time, though you definitely have an advantage in getting people to judge your entry if you can do a web playable embed
looks like the opt out may be only for the jam, not the compo; generally the compo is hard mode, I've only ever entered the jam personally
When is the next Epic Sponsered Game Jam?
not sure, but last year it was in August
so if there will be one, it'll probably be at around the same time
any other game jams that are suited for UE games? other than epic mega gameajam
pretty much any game jam allows freedom of engine, try looking on itch
yeah but most of them produce webgl games, dont want to compete against those
You can always use an older version of the engine for that
4.24 or older
Hi, nice to speak to everyone, i'm new to Discord.
Can someone tell me how to play on the DE GER servers. Lot of good maps there but everytime I try to play on one, they require a password.

Is their any kind of schedule for Epic's game jams?
I believe the Epic MegaJam is usually in last quarter of the year, not sure about the smaller jams
I missed the days when there was a gam jam every month
Then it went to every quarter
and now it's like twice a year
But unreal swag
anyone interested in interactive virtualizations of reality, like virtualizing a power plant, the generators etc, for interesting / educational purposes?
I've done realistic buoyancy for boats before. Also used realistic pivot points of the motor and proper forces. All this worked on phone.
So ya somewhat
It's fun to make things that just work realistically.
Cool. Iโve always wanted to be able to interact with simulated 3D systems, even if just a high quality interactive cross section. Honestly if done to high enough quality and representing enough interests I canโt imagine there not being demand

Houdini Game Jam is this Friday 6/17! Use Unreal Engine + Houdini to build a game in one week for a chance to win cool prizes!!!
I am interested in taking part in a game jam, but i dont know much about how they work. Could somebody explain to me the basic progression/workflow of a game jam eg. How are the roles/tasks chosen for each person? How does the team communicate? Are there game jams that are more tailored towards beginners? (A lot of the ones I have seen seem a bit intimidating) Im not 100% confident in my skills, but feel i need to take part in one to get better, my social skills arent the best however so I have a lot of anxiety about it.
I would for sure recommend you to try out a Gamejam, GenkiB! It's a lot of fun, even though they can become quite stressful if your scope is out of wack.
- I don't think there's any set progression/workflow for how Gamejams work so this might not be accurate; you'll either be the one trying to get a group together and will look for people to complement each others skills (to avoid ending up with 5 animators for example), or you'll look for a group and then you'll probably post what skills you have so that (for the UEjams it this usually happens in the #game-jam-lfg). So I doubt there will be roles assigned unless everyone in the team is a generalist (I guess if you're multiple of same discipline you'd decide on a split of workload)
- The groups I've been in has usually started with a brainstorming session on voip or text where we spawn up ideas based on the theme and then we pick one of them to go for
- The tasks are usually discussed within the group, after you have the gameidea you'll probably start dissecting it to see who can do what.
- I think most teams use discord to communicate for their jams, with a new discord group.
- There are for sure jams aimed at beginners, it is probably a good start-point (https://itch.io/jam/my-first-game-jam-summer-2022 seems like a great first jam).
- Being aware of the social skill is probably a good step in the right direction:) If you're worried about having a hard time with strangers on the internet then doing a gamejam as a solodev is also an option. Its still a good experience and finishing the jam isn't a requirement after joining up (There are always a lot of people that will join but never finish)
Hi Connecta, your comment has helped me to understand what goes on with a game jam. I am interested in joining one, I think I should work on my skills a little first and find out which parts im actually good at. The social thing is something Iโd like to fix but donโt know where to start with that, Iโm usually ok with texting but not so good at using my voice in a voice call, I become quite anxious, but I donโt want it to hold me back from things I wanna do
Yeah that looks like a a scam, <@&213101288538374145> ?

After a long time of procrastinating I've decided to create the following jam, basically to make myself to make one game a month, start to finish.
It's a 'monthly' game jam that revolves around using the current month free assets in the marketplace.

interested
It is definitely happening! ๐ We'll have more to tell in a few weeks ๐
Hey guys just curious. I've been doing game development in my offtime for a couple years now. What level of ability do you think is necessary to attempt to participate in a game jam?
determination and commitment to see it through are the only prerequisite skills
though hard development skills of any kind are also of course extremely useful
(and of course, it is not coincidence that I have arrived back in the server due to rumours of a certain Megajam being forthcoming ๐ )
yea, I'm also relatively new to game development. Only been really studying for about half a year now. I have recently learned about game jams. However, I dont want to suffer from dunning-kruger effect, in thinking I know more than I really do. As you are, I'm curious if I'd be a good fit for a gam jam or not.
my general advice is to try to group up with both similar levels of development experience and jam commitment
outside of that, it's not important - game jams are basically a marathon activity and they are open to participants of all skill levels
We encourage all developers to participate, regardless of skill level. The spirit of the Jam is to come together with your peers and try some awesome things. The modifiers are also a great way to try new things, or get jammy with your strengths.
We've also recently concluded our first Unreal Challenge- in part, these are also a learning opportunity and resource to practice various skill sets throughout the year, and use those new and freshly trained skills in the next MegaJam! :)
Pretty much the only prerequisite for making a submission is being able to package the project. With the amount of available tutorials and templates, you can figure out everything else along the way. Because you need to rush through basically the whole stack of developing a game in a week, a jam is an amazing way to learn new techniques, discover your weaknesses, and maybe even kickstart your next project.
And even if you don't end up submitting a game (many don't!), you will learn a lot.
I'm in the lookout for someone who can write a simple game design doc
I can๐
