Makes the game quite a bit more challenging at the start :D

#

same with the sewage truck

#

foggy path
#

lol

#

yeah it does change up how you need to approach it at the start

#

you do get the boat and moped, so you can use those to get around at least

#

with the van at the start you'd never really have to use those

pearl elk
#

here I was thinking moped was an end game vehicle

light spruce
#

I just wanted to not have to take an hour to get the hoist on the engine like I was drunk, had no depth perception, and had flippers instead of hands

the moped is the Dark Souls of two-wheeled vehicles

I had that exact same model moped when I was 15

you have to turn the gas line to the on setting and then it'll start from the kickstarter

There were some news recently for UE & Houdini, go check.

#

Afaik, exports are free for UE.

ancient hornet
#

didn't they make the "import plugins" free for all recently?

frail hull
#

I guess, you cannot export them as .fbx. You can export .obj files then you might need to convert them back to .fbx using some other tool. (Blender, etc)
And you cannot use Houdini Engine inside Unreal with this version.

frail hull
#

BTW: Just buy the license. It's worthy.

ancient hornet
#

right, but mostly I remembered the news that it was free for all (aka easier to remember) ๐Ÿ˜›

frail hull
#

SideFX is pleased to announce that Houdini Engine for UE4 and Houdini Engine for Unity are now available for commercial customers for free. Previously free for artists using Houdini Indie, this now gives commercial artists and studios the ability to widely deploy procedural assets created in Houdini to the UE4 and Unity real-time 3D platforms for use in game and XR development, virtual production and design visualizations.

#

Just copying the first para ๐Ÿ˜„

ancient hornet
#

can you make trees with it like with Speedtree?

frail hull
#

If you work a bit hard. It has a L-System based tool. So, you can generate trees pretty quickly.

#

Textuing is a bit of work. But totally doable.

#

There are tutorials on this topic. Just Youtube it.

#

We can import some leaf atlases and assign them to tree.

#

There's a free Autodesk tool that converts multiple formats into .fbx

#

It's quite handy

foggy path
#

The Houdini Engine plug-ins have been used on numerous shipped games - just a few examples include Kingโ€™s Candy Crush, eXiinโ€™s Ary and the Secret of Seasons, and Fishing Cactusโ€™s Nanotale - Typing Chronicles.

#

Were these really the most impressive titles they could find?

Hello folks;

We are experiencing a huge performance issue on iOS (with UE 4.25)
On Android; we can reach nearly 60fps (on both Samsung S7 and MI 8 SE) but on iOS we got 20 fps on iPhone 7. Also the phone gets really really hot and battery gets almost drained after 15-20 minutes.

Any ideas how is this happening?
Thanks.

tight panther

I was asking about Perforce because there's also Helix project management

plucky pagoda
#

ah

#

I'll look into it

tight panther
#

Yeah no chance going back after using Perforce, Git stores every file every time

#

It's clearly not the proper use case

which we ended up doing

plucky pagoda

true. I technically specialised in programming and UI work before I generalised. But I feel like im rusty in both areas there as I've spent more time on the art side after a period of burnout. it's really good right now. Im sure some Maya fans will disagree, and they would probably be right, but I'm having a blast with it.

My problem with Blender still with the bones

#

its kinda sad by 2021 still unsolved kinda feel like live in 2011 perpetually

cursive crypt
#

Not sure wdym. You can't really have full match between UE and Blender as they use different axes orientation. At best what I got is just two swapped axes X and Y. Heads, tips and etc. match with good FBX settings. Also someone up just showed the gltf export from UE it looked nice. @median wraith

median wraith
#

and still the scale problems

cursive crypt
#

You have 100 to 1 and you keep your anims at 1.

fathom wadi
#

bones in Blender are Head + Tail configuration. Bones in UE4 are head only.

median wraith
#

to me didn't worked really

#

no for others as well, you still have to rescale all 100 times inside blender

#

with the issues it cause

fathom wadi
#

if you try do a traditional bone setup, ie. Bone to Bone to Bone, all leading back root, it will need fixing up otherwise when it gets to UE it will look wrong. If you use linking, it has a better chance.

cursive crypt
#

Hmm... I dunno. I'm working mainly with skelmeshes. It is just Import/Export FBX setting.

#

However, I do remember spending like a day trying to figure out them FBX settings (bad memories).

#

Also UE is a bit tricky wrt computing the relative bone transforms, compared to Blender say.

median wraith
#

did epic finished the gltf ?

#

last time I checked still didn't support animations and skeletons

cursive crypt
#

Check the new Exporter MP plugin. I dunno about the Importer.

median wraith
#

but thats from UE4 outside

#

I don't have use for that

fathom wadi
#

automatic bone orientation can help sometimes with exporting. It doesn't always work though. Depends on the rig.

cursive crypt
#

Well, it is equally important in the general case, being able to export from UE.

median wraith

cursive crypt

Yeah, some guys love that old-school look.

#

There is some good doc for the gltf exporter, limitations and stuff. Didn't read it.

carmine frigate
#

i use blender for gray boxing

cursive crypt
#

Okay, gray lovers then, lol.

carmine frigate
#

i couldnt get the metahuman face to export on gltf yet, thought it was the material but it isnt

cursive crypt
#

Checkout that doc, might give you a hint. There were some issues with the materials.

fathom wadi
#

you aren't supposed to export them tho right?

cursive crypt
#

I think it is fine? As long they end up in UE for presentation.

carmine frigate
#

i export whatever i want

cursive crypt
#

lol

fathom wadi
#

they might have the same issue as paragon materials that are in a bit format that can't be exported. So you can do tricks like merge meshes and bake materials to one.

#

that will give you a material you can export

cursive crypt
#

I think the limitations are due to the gltf from what I have glanced over.

carmine frigate
#

i can still use the fbx exporter for the metahuman

fathom wadi
#

@knotty remnant there are two methods. 1. The usual way is to add them under the same folder as the Persistent Level. 2. Use Dynamic Level Instances to load them but you may need my Latent Stream Level Node. (shameless plug)

cursive crypt

carmine frigate

it cuts them out and u have to fix em

cursive crypt

Oh, wait seams... seams does not mean 100% hard/sharp edges.

carmine frigate

does it support UDIMs?

cursive crypt

cursive crypt
#

fathom wadi

it would be cool if it did.

carmine frigate
#

i am not sure if it happens on export from DDc or import in unreal, i think on import

cursive crypt
#

Well, I do remember that I usually clean up some creases anyway when importing from UE. Likely due to the auto-smoothing and stuff.

#

For UV islands tho, haven't noticed.

fathom wadi
#

I didn't realise they recognised the creasing. I should do that more often

carmine frigate
#

just export a mesh with UV islands import in unreal , export from unreal import to blender and when u select all on a vert it only selects the island

#

fairly easy to fix tho

cursive crypt
#

Merge at distance.

carmine frigate
#

the quads from trist is another thing, it does its own thing

carmine frigate

#

well i never seen any MP pack come with blend files, its a damn shame

carmine frigate

why dont any of em have the high poly that got used for the normal bake?

that stuff is usefull

#

its all use as is

fathom wadi

It's really about time we had an Open Mesh format for non-destructive editing across the DCC->UE4 import export shuffle. There's no real reason not to have it by now. We have things like Houdini plugin that basically do it for one app, but there is code out there for an open system

they even have a blender build for it

How viable does a tri-barrel 6.5x45mm minigun sound as a stationary turret

#

Itโ€™ll fire 1800 rounds/min and hold 500 rounds in the drum, allowing roughly 16.6 seconds of continuous fire

light spruce
#

why is it x45?

cursive crypt
#

Oh, yeah!

light spruce
#

@thin glacier Also, you'd want a belt rather than a drum. A drum of that capacity would be very heavy, have dogshit reliability, and need a ratcheting clock spring setup that gets wound pretty regularly.

thin glacier
#

Itโ€™s a linkless feed system. The drum is the same kind used by larger gatling cannons such as the M61 and GAU-8

#

Also, the round uses a 6.5mm armor piercing bullet in a necked up 5.56 case, which is 45mm long

#

The GAU-8 with the feed system

#

The M61 Vulcan

light spruce
#

Yeah, that I'm familiar with. I don't think it'd make as much sense on an intermediate cartridge type setup because it wouldn't have the same kind of feed problems that led to that electric driven monstrosity. But I also wasn't thinking of that a drum given the cartridge size.

#

If you wanted to use an actual 6mm cartridge, either a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC is what I would do. But I also don't have any context here really.

thin glacier
#

My main goal was a high velocity armor piercing round with more mass than 5.56, but was compact enough to fit a lot of ammo in a relatively small space

#

I actually have a 6-barrel version of the gun almost finished, but I figured Iโ€™d try a 3-barrel design to make it smaller

light spruce
#

Six would be overkill

thin glacier
#

Yup, especially since the fire rate would be limited while mounted on a turret rather than a vehicle or mech

#

So Iโ€™ll just go with a more compact tri-barrel model based on the XM301

#

The 301 is 20mm, but thereโ€™s no reason it canโ€™t be scaled down

light spruce
#

at that rate of fire being electrically driven... three is definitely fine. Gas-operated, a gas block or tube is what would go long before a barrel did

thin glacier
#

I figured Iโ€™d go with a rotary MG for a few reasons:

  • the barrels have more time to cool down than a single barrel MG with the same fire rate
  • the gun can still operate in spite of a dud round, and you donโ€™t want any jams while defending a position
  • Rule of Cool
light spruce
#

Rule of Cool I'd still be giving the nod to a 3 over a 6

thin glacier
#

By the way, any thoughts about this 25mm for a drone?

#

Itโ€™s had some work after these were taken, but everything already in the pics is pretty much the same

#

The drone will fulfill a similar role to the A-10. Itโ€™ll have 10 hardpoints (2 internal, 4 under each wing) and the cannon will be under the fuselage while firing at the 6 oโ€™ clock position

#

The drum holds 1200 rounds and the cannon fires 3500 rounds/min

light spruce
#

Only if A) It still sounds like the tripods from War of the Worlds and B) the drone actually has difficulty maintaining the thrust vector while firing.

#

What the fuck do any of these YouTube Music playlist names ever mean?

@real palm I have several unfinished projects that I have been working on while learning. I dont stray far from programming gameplay systems, so I dont have anything thats nice to look at. I made a custom ui focus system that is navigable with both a mouse/keyboard and a gamepad controller. I worked on a voxel destructible terrain using procedural mesh component and the marching cubes algorithm (it doesnt have very good performance though). I have made several rpg gameplay systems for abilities, items, and whatnot. My current project is a tetris-like game except everything is a simple circle shape. What about you?

Solid mix of hand animated stuff, physics sims, and data from a Rokoko mocap suit (learned a ton about IK rigging, too, to mix it all up)!

bit of a shame cuz the gunplay is quite good, theres just not many reasons to use the others. I think they coulda gone more of a Borderlands route where the different manufacturers have specialities rather that them all sharing the same random stat pool

#

Yeah. There are definitely some things that are objectively better.

And a few things that really only become useful with particularly specific setups
