For clicking scenarios on our new benchmarks season for KovaaKs (Season 5), would you prefer Reload or SQRT-accuracy scoring?

What is reload?

“Reload” is used to refer to a scenario using a weapon with limited ammo in the magazine that depletes and requires reloading with sufficient consecutive misses. This is usually used in place of accuracy-based scoring.

What is wrong with reload?

Regardless of how strictly reload is implemented, alternating hitting and missing shots never triggers a reload, which means fundamentally the reload mechanic can only force a minimum accuracy of 50%. As such reload does not meaningfully incentivize accuracy on any individual shot, encouraging you to push your tempo and simply hope you don’t choke the run. In this process you are also encouraged to care more about any shots taken immediately after a miss as it only takes a few consecutive misses to ruin the viability of a run as reloading rarely leaves a run salvageable.

What is square root accuracy?

Square root accuracy, usually shorted to ‘sqrt acc’, is a score modifier in Aim Training that multiplies the final score by the square root of the accuracy as a ratio. This is much more forgiving than proper accuracy scoring since for values of x less than 1, the square root of x is greater than x. So, for example 90% accuracy will turn into a score multiplier of ~0.95 and 80% accuracy will turn into a score multiplier of ~0.89

What does square root accuracy do better than reload?

When the goal of a scenario is to encourage high accuracy, sqrt acc provides consistent moderate incentive to hit each shot. This is done without significantly impacting scoring when accuracy is maintained due to the reduced effect compared to standard accuracy scoring. Sqrt acc also comes with the advantage of avoiding the jarring halt in tempo caused by triggering a reload, or the need to restart the run entirely. As a minor bonus effect, sqrt acc also increases the granularity of scoring which helps avoid ties on the leaderboard.
