Almost all lights in NMS are set to quadratic falloff, which means they go from, say, 100 brightness to 1 brightness extremely quickly. The other option is linear falloff, which they rarely use, which makes lights go from 100 to 1 brightness over a much farther distance. Lookup linear versus quadratic curves for an example.

Unless you're using a mod to tame flying creatures, you can't do anything with them. If you are using a mod, you want to use the terrain manipulator to build a pillar, then stand on top to feed and tame.

If you use a ton of lights, you can save a lot of performance with quadratic falloff because you don't calculate shadows very far from the source. They have started addressing this a little with Remnant where they completely reworked the lighting system to have radii for lights so you could maybe have very slow falloff with a tight radius that keeps the computational load low

Flying or floating? Some creatures are always the same height above terrain and aren't really flying creatures. Flying creatures don't have taming enabled, so you can only tame them with mods. You can trade their eggs after taming, but you probably can't interact with the pet after hatching

Best to play solo until you get to the Nexus Anomaly, then coop

When I try to modify it, the game tells me the modules need to be connected. Actually, I think it's a known bug. Basically, no landing works properly; either you can't land at all, or you land in the wrong place in space stations and anomalies. And when you try to modify my corvette, the game tells you that you need to connect the modules. I also noticed that when you open the ship's inventory, the ship's representation is very far away.

My starting planet did something extremely weird.

I was taking a massive tunnel trying to find any underground cave appropriate to size for the rare to spawn.

Found a string of active volcanoes. Climbed on one input a object on top and I think it was a signal booster and then I used it, and then the whole chain of volcanoes disappeared and my tunnel disappeared and it was suddenly overwritten with a completely different landscape. I was like what the hell. I was totally lost.

Yes I am sure. There are two that are supposed to be underground one is rare one is uncommon. The caves are literally smaller than a common bathroom most of the time. And that in itself is a part of the problem because it has to be between 15 and 20 units horizontally and vertically also the information that I was given. It also has to have a cave floor and not volcanic. That also is a problem because you can go into a cave and have a volcanic floor with the cave marrow stalagmites and stalactites and not actually be a cave floor texture. Hence the . 5%

Closest to compare would probably be Minecraft but I haven't played that so just going by what that seems like.
I would say it is more of a sandbox style game than anything, the combat is rather average, but you can do a lot of exploring.

Just went with an S class system freighter on my ps5 save but I don't play that one much.

you're not guaranteed that it is S-class though, there is a 5% chance of that, your best option is a corvette with a way for you to quickly get out of the ship so that you can use your visor to look at the dreadnought before fighting it, you can then see the class first, and just warp out and back if it is not S-class. The visor won't show the class if you're inside your corvette when using it, so you need to exit the corvette, I have a staircase up to the roof of my corvette just behind the cockpit seat which lets me do just that
you need to fly a little bit closer to it than your warp-in point though
