I'm very new, and opened a container that led me to a drop ship. Part of the repair used an anti-matter container. I do not have one, nor the ability to craft one. Is the benefit from that drop ship lost? Are there things I should avoid opening until I am more established? I did exhaust the internet for answers without much clarity.

So do those when not in a group; you can be in multiplayer without grouping up. that won't typically hurt progress. There are special quests to be (optionally) done in groups, you get those from the Nexus Anomaly that you unlock after you have warped to another star system.

Game then can synchronise you with other players online or only download their bases, discoveries or other things they uploaded when they were online.

Shoot it, and it'll pop and drop a larval core, but you have to be quick because it will provoke bio-horrors. The core will also roll away and despawn if you don't catch it.
