One thing I always do is make sure I do a lot of manual saves, since the autosave can be overwritten automatically (such as after death), while the manual gives you more reliable backup. I keep a Save Point in my inventory, plop it down, save, and pick it up again... A lot. 🤣

Yah, but changes made some time back added a lot more autosaving (used to just be when you exited your ship), so folks were more in the habit of manual saving (which could be done with Save Point, Save Beacon, the save/chart devices at several types of POIs, and the like). The drawback to frequent autosaves outside our control is they overwrite that one opportunity, and if not doing manual saves, the "alternative previous point" won't even exist or be ancient. At least doing it intentionally you can keep it up to date with a "known good" value.

If you die in Permadeath mode, it erases your inventory, your save, your self esteem, it blows out the tires on your car, it slices your husband/wife in half, does an airstrike on your house and makes the currency of your country go down by 0.08%

so it was an extreme storm on a lush planet with activated copper or something, it's all rainy. I tunnel down and sideways into the ground with terrain manipulator into a narrow cave nearly filled with water except for the top part, pretty normal stuff.

then I tunnel forward and back up again to one of those POIs with the two small buildings called shelters. (like image) there's 2 geks standing outside in the rain and I go to talk to the closer one and he starts going off about how there aren't enough "assimilation languages"

i just got the game and am playing brand new for the first time ever

the story isn't tied to any specific planet in most cases. as soon as you get your ship your can fly to a less dangerous planet and continue from there

you could also just start again and you should be on a different planet that might be less hostile

At first, the Corvette won't be able to enter the anomaly, but when it does enter, there is a chance an invisible Corvette is parked in the same pad as yours so as you get put you might be stuck. Even if that doesn't happen, the lag will make your shopping experience hell, and when you come back, again chances are your corvette will be blocked by another parked in the same place. That is if some jerk doesn't decide to go to the anomaly with his modded bajillion part corvette and crash your game.

I think if they made the Anomaly a more city-like hub, that would be fun, a separate drydock for Corvettes on another level, increase lobby size in the anomaly and have some additional areas to explore and roam around. A teleporter designed for getting into your mates instance if you're both already online rather than leaving to the main menu.
