And because of that if ship building feels like a chore or not necessary for your play style you still have many options

That's really how this whole game is built. We all reach the same place. But we have so many options of how to get there and how we improve our characters along the way.

However, when I did that, the autopilot went wonky in the exact way you describe

What projects can i try to make using nms electricity

Basically, you know how a settlement starts with debt, right? If you increase your productivity, the debt will be cleared eventually, slowly ticking down until it reaches 0, and the settlement starts to produce items for you.

But, if you make a decision later that ADDS debt when it was already cleared, the production will be paused until that new debt is cleared once more, making you wait.

Adding money to the settlement's reserves lets you do two things. If you have debt, adding money to the reserves will immediately clear that debt for however much money was added. If you don't have debt, that money will still be added to the settlement, but in it's "reserves", so when you make another decision that gives you debt, it'll first reduce the debt by the amount of money you have in the reserves, lowering the time the production is interrupted or completely eliminating the debt in one go if you have enough money in your reserves
