IDK Probably the difficulty settings or something, but those pirates were super fast and heavy. They oneshot my shield and I almost lose all my lives. I had to maneuver and flee. I coudln't destroy a single pirate, and I've killed over 80 pirates in this run already.

I have seen some tricks involving calling your corvette to a settlement, then building a base as close as you can to that, so that the build zones overlap. Then you can toggle between adding to the base or the corvette

The trick with settlements is, if you TP to a settlement, your corvette will always be in the same position and orientation. You can glitch parts onto it or your nearby base, then TP back to a station to continue editing the corvette.

my method was i started with a circle like from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSXSpt4rxC0, then wire glitched a cube to the side of each floor piece, then wire glitched a small paving with a pyramid to the inward side of the cubes, then glitched a light box with a floor to the small pavings, then went 1 lightbox and 1 short wall inwards
