I tried to do one when they first launched but it just seemed like a bunch of vaguely random activities with no real purpose to them.

They are a time-limited events in which you complete some milestones to earn rewards, in a nutshell; there's a general theme to them. Sometimes they are more story-driven, sometimes they are there as a way to introduce a new mechanic (that would be the case for the current one)...

Expeditions are really good after you finish the normal game. Late game is often pretty boring, so doing expeditions where you have certain goals is pretty refreshing. Also, after you finish expedition you get some exclusive things, like ships, multitools or customisation options that you can't get anywhere else

My main struggle with multiplayer is finding something to do that isn’t simpler to do solo, I guess. Like, farming nanites or credits doesn’t make much sense, you’ll get half of everything and probably not that much faster, building bases is ok I guess but pure ferrite is weird to come by sometimes and can be annoying in large amounts. Idk I guess I just don’t know what I want to do.

Oh, I got the PC controller issue on Steam fixed, reading the many reports all over the Steam discussions about it (quoting myself):

I have been suffering this in PC Experimental branch since yesterday. I just read through some of the suggestions (many people seeing this) in these threads and I was able to take a simple route to get my PS Dual Sense controller working again, as it has for years.

I went, in Steam, to Properties (right click on NMS in your library list) > Controller > Override for No Man's Sky [select list] I chose Use Default Settings.

Boom -- it works again. (I did not need to do the larger Big Picture Mode approach I see discussed in these threads, FYI.)
