I think you only see the "goal" amount when you select the completion quest itself. The discoveries tabs don't show a total number, and I have found that there may be more than the goal amount of the three categories present. (So I find 26/25 flora etc.)

NMS changed whether the hostile flora counted for the goal or could be discovered relatively recently, and stopped assigning them species names.

Maybe it's just Fauna that it does it for, but several planets will show like 3 / 4 in the discovery tab

Yeah went threw my discovery pages, fauna shows the number to discover, but the other 2 don't. Weird

Yah, and it is the other 2 categories that I consistently may find more than the goal amount, as well: Flora and Minerals. Since those two types are static (unmoving) objects while the Fauna dynamically move and interact with each other, it makes sense the code treats them differently.

All Living Ships are S-Class, just like all Exotics. They are a bit harder to upgrade, but if you acquire some Living Frigates (Organics), they can bring upgrade modules back from missions.

Just a type of red planet, mainly found in red star systems (there are green and blue ones too)

They're usually called "mega exotics" due to having big flora/minerals, but aren't rare at all in the places they're found

They also always have some sort of weird filter, and are some variant of an existing biome with no passive hazard
