I'm not sure what would cause you losing progress besides it being a different save, or cloud backups being weird

I like my fighter the most but I might use my solar purely for faster planet travel

Neither are faster than each other to my knowledge
The only thing that makes boosting go faster is focusing power to engines, or being in a sentinel ship which have much faster in-atmo speeds
The only thing that makes pulse engine speed faster is the Sub-Light Amplifier, otherwise all ships pulse at the same speed
Solar is more fuel efficient at pulsing though and has the built-in launch auto-charging

Then you can join them while they are online and create a base at their planet to teleport back there anytime, or land at the space station of their system which adds it to your teleport list

or you can use glyphs to travel to their planet, but the easiest way to get those is by completing the main story

You could break a bit of the wall, go into the wall, then use the "restore terrain" function to make youself stuck, which the game fixes by zipping you to the surface

It's called reloading restore point, the game already has many many little functions to stop you from getting stuck via terrain so I guess if they added an unstuck command then it'd be like they lost the battle lol
