It's all about your preference, but yeah upgrades matter more than what the ship is itself but you can move those from one to the other
Sentinel ships can move much faster through atmospheres and hover in place, which may be alluring since they're the only ships that can do that, but their maneuverability system is entirely different from any other ship which may be very weird without Pulse Engine upgrade modules installed to increase Maneuverability

I like Fighters, but Sentinels have a better Hyperdrive range so there's that. Also, don't forget to keep a Backup Ship if you decide to use a Sentinel. They require Exotic Materials from Dissonant planets or Repair Kits should they get damaged.

Pretty much, the main story teaches you much of the game slowly and doesn't demand you go do everything beforehand

There are definitely good points to branch off and do stuff, but don't feel bad for rushing to the end or anything close to that, there's a lot to learn and the lower right guidance does a good job at walking you through what you need to do in the moment

There's also an entire wiki thing built into the game with lots of useful pages of info as well as a list of all resources and if you've encountered something that requires them you can try to locate them and it gives you a mission that walks you through finding that thing

You can do a lot, build bases, explore the galaxy, look for the coolest space ship, becoming a trader, be a pirate just to name some of things you can do

I've been focusing on upgrading everything to S class, getting a squadron put together, taking down pirate freighters, taking care of my companions, and sending my crew on frigate missions
