Seems like they tried only a couple of things, but if it can substitute oxygen then it's still pretty useless.

You can set up an oxygen farm pretty much straight away, for a methane farm you have to complete the game and get to purple stars. Doesn't sound too handy

1. Complete the Artemis Path (the main story of the game).

MP is not the real goal of NMS, no.
You can play with others, but most don’t make much use of MP, far less use PvP, like seriously rare for you to encounter anyone outside of the public space (Anomaly)

Exploration is the main focus of the game, it's fine with multiplayer but it has issues here and there
