I wouldn't call myself an expert but try to fish in the early game. It's a great way to make money. Giving a loved gift to a villager on their birthday gives you extra hearts - you can buy a calendar from Robin's that you can hang in your house.

I'd using training rod until you're level 6 then, so you can get the iridium rod at level 6. Iridium rod will then let you use bobbers to make fishing easier even with high level fish
