Generally these moves aren't all that important, but sword and hammer special moves are very nice to deal with flying enemies who may dodge your swings with their weird movement patterns, since these moves block/attack all sides at once

There is also The Hammer Bug™ which makes the hammer a top tier weapon but is not at all necessary to make it really good so I don't want to mention it any more than necessary (and is the reason I tend to use swords not to abuse this fact)
