okay so yeah, animal products, harvesting produce, and reading farming xp granting books from the bookseller are the ways to level up farming. It takes progressively more xp to level up as you increase in skill, so taking a while more is normal

beginner here but my chickens lay eggs after i bought a silo and cut grass (it should automatically deposite the hay in their feed)
