Yeah - New world is fine for co-op. It's more the persistant nature of the world plus limited farmhand slots means you want to find someone you plan to play with for a while

Animals can't die from starvation but in very rare cases, they can be attacked by a wild animal over night if they are locked out of barn/coop

In my experience, you have to TRY to off them but locking them out purposefully but just don't leave barn/coop doors closed overnight.

No. They can't get into the barn. They only attack your animals if you lock them outside. There's no reason to ever close the doors. Unless you find it too hard to pet them outside and want to pet them inside first thing in the morning.

I don't think it's bad. You're doing fine. Now that it's winter and you don't have to water crops, do some more mining to upgrade your tools and make more sprinklers (preferably quality ones. When Spring rolls around you'll be ready to make a bigger farm and make more money.

My first two farms were so bad I deleted them and started over. My third was a great success, having taken what I learned with the first two attempts and using it to my benefit.
I look at it this way: I'm not afraid to start a game over. Losing a little time and progress is nothing compared to living with regret, the regret of wondering what I could have done better.
So sometimes I start a game over and find out just how much better I can do.
But it's not an approach for everyone.

It was very profitable, but honestly one of the most boring playthough I made

Axe > Copper for Hardwood / stump clearing
Pick > Copper for tolerable (but slow) mining in the mid-range of the mines
Pick > Iron for pretty solid mining through the mines, though the end is still a little slow

Watering Can > Copper
Hoe > Copper

Axe > Iron for clearing out the big fallen trees

Part of the trick is to just hold right click if you're on the PC - Holding it with seeds or harvesting will apply it to the tiles in reach when you mouse over them

Fishing can get you good money early on, but if you're having trouble with it, use the Training Rod you can buy from Willy for dirt cheap.
Holding the button down and running is an efficient way of planting and laying down fertilizer.
Harvesting crops horizontally, in the middle of three rows of crops, will harvest the row you're on, as well as the row above you and the row below you, i.e. three rows in one pass.
Concentrate on spending your money on things that can make you MORE money. Seeds, farm buildings, animals.

@urban marsh Also, when Salmonberry Season rolls around in year 1 Spring 15-18, go out every day to pick them. They aren't worth anything to sell, but they are so plentiful you can eat them for weeks, if not months, solving your early-game food problems. The best spot to find them is in Cindersap, which has by far the greatest number of bushes, so start there.

I always build a silo before my first animal building. And only clear a minimal amount of grass before that, so I have plenty to cut for hay once I get a silo.
Let your animals out every day to eat grass. It raises their mood to max and gives Friendship points.

Not something to rush for, but if you get up to a level 3 barn or coop, it automatically feeds them from your hay stockpile. If they're allowed out to eat grass, they don't need hay for the day.
