Its my first time playing stardew valley and I'm just wondering how do I know what a character's interests are?

I choose fruit bats over mushrooms because:
-botanist makes iridium fruit gifting much easier than waiting 4 whole years for iridium fruit trees (3 villagers also have loved gifts for specific fruit. 4 if you include wild plums for Jas' plum pudding. Everyone else likes them)
-makes CC/shipping easier
-eat fruits for energy early game (same could be said for mushrooms, I just like fruit more since every single type could be eaten)
-small storage space for late game. I usually put my coffee ||pots|| in here
-mushroom logs make fruit bats even more appealing since you already have another source to get mushrooms easier. Just because mushroom cave comes with a free dehydrator, still doesn’t make it worth it for me personally, but I also just grow crops for kegs so a free dehydrator could be useful early game if you wanted to grow multiples crops
-dont need to check it as frequently as the mushroom cave so it makes it more flexible for me to spend my time doing other things

Personally, I say the goal is just to take your time, respect your own pace, and see what piques your interest. There's so much activities -- farming, fishing, mining, and then there's also befriending NPCs and doing quests for the town.

Starting on the first play through with no background of the game can feel overwhelming at first but as the days go by, it does get easier. You can look at beginner-friendly videos on YT (be careful of spoilers though). The wiki is pretty much a complete guide with the information you need for most, if not all, aspects of base game.

Honestly find out what u like, I abondoned several farms in the process and figured I'm still favouring mining even in this game and that I prefer specific farms over others and specific activities over others, my friend said her first two seasons were spent aimlessly because she just took her time exploring and talking to people, my bf did no mining and only fishing. The best choice is to try a little of everything at ur own pace and decide what brings u the most fun, nobody is gonna grade u at the end of every day or season on the progress uve done so take ur time
