Hii! I guess the most important thing about friendship is that it allows you to progress in the storyline, and get to hear/see cutscenes of characters! But also maintaining a certain level of frienship allows the charcters to send you gifts via mail which can be helpful, and also a certain level of friendship is required before you can request to date/marry someone!

are you sure you've been feeding them properly? it's one of the confusing things in game

if youre not at winter and have some grass around you can also let them out of the coop, so they can feed on grass directly. just leave door open so they can go back inside before night

in that case keep doing what you're doing and their hearts will increase with time

one other thing is they like it when you let them roam outside

the fence is either purely easthetical or makes it easier for you to keep your animals from bothering you when you're trying to plant/water/harvest your crops
