How sure are you that they're dying?
The little brown root looking things aren't dead, they just look like that.

The only way crops die is Crows, Lightning strikes, and Season change. Crows don't leave anything behind, and Lightning/Season death leaves behind a wilted plant that you can scythe away.

Placement of rod doesn't matter. It's just bad luck your crop got struck

Assuming you put all your rod in the farm

Lightning rods aren't perfect. Basically when lighting strikes it searches 'Does rod exist?'. If yes, it strikes one of your rods... if that rod happens to already be charging then it will strike a random tile.

So more rods is less chance. But it's never completely perfect past the first strike.
