if you're scared of the mine just know that you can stock up food to restore health quickly (cheese, berries, salad, etc.), and there's elevator for every 5 levels if you're scared of losing progress, and if you want to skip a floor you can craft a staircase for 99 stone each after reaching mining level 1 or 2

Yeah, upgrading hoe lets you hoe more tiles.
I don't find it useful, because if you have plants die in a spot as the season changes, it leaves behind a wilted plant, which keeps the spot hoed and watered if you have sprinklers.
