I am playing on Switch, I have the iridium rod, and watched literally all the tutorials. But when I go to select the bait, it doesn't move out of the square if that makes sense, so I can't phisically move it to the rod. It can also come in handy if you need to buy ores from Clint, because it might be cheaper to buy the lower ore (with enough coal to smelt it, of course) and transmute it to the higher than it is to buy the higher ores.

You just have to work at it.
The stumps in the Secret Woods are worth some good XP.
And you can maximize your foraging time by only foraging on Saturdays. Forageables accumulate throughout the week and reach a peak on Saturdays before resetting on Sundays.
