The silo automatically fills the hopper not the feeding bench. You have to take the hay out of the hopper and put it into the bench manually. Don't get rid of your silo.

I think a silo is still very useful since you don't have to store your hay in a chest and get it outta the chest and onto the food spots every time.. and also if you upgrade your coop/ barn up to lvl. 3 the hopper automatically fills up the food spots for you! Silo is also nice because if you destroy the grass during summer and autumn, it gives you hay that goes directly into your silo (if no silo, you get no hay from chopping grass)

It works better. They love grass. It gives them friendship points that stack with petting, and elevates their mood to maximum. All of this helps with production for most animals. (Pigs being an exception that don't require mood for truffles.)
