This part is actually quite important. using hamachi with strangers can be very risky, and essentially letting strangers into your home network is never a good idea.

Due to many people having MP issues, and the regular guides being not useful for the current most prevalent problem I figured I might as well make a short post of things to check and do to get it working again.

First check if you're connected to the matchmaking server. This is to check if you're having this problem, otherwise try the regular troubleshooting guide.
As host of the farm: Check in the options if you have the Show Invite Code option. If you don't, it means you're having the issue that seems to be plaguing everyone and the solutions below might be able to help you.
As client that connects to a farm: Click Co-op, and if you only have Connect by LAN in the following screen it means you're having the same issue.
Another quick way to figure out whose side it's on is if you as client can right click and Join game in Steam. This means it's working on the host's side. If your game does nothing while you clicked this it means the issue is on your side.

As for solutions: There have been many, and I've seen people have success with several different methods.
The list to try to fix it, in order of least effort first:

  • Restart the game.
  • Restart Steam.
  • Start a second instance of the game, close the first. (Do this by going to the game directory and simply starting Stardew Valley.exe while the game is already open. (StartdewModdingAPI.exe if using mods)
  • Restart your computer.

I've been able to fix it so far without rebooting my computer once so I'm guessing the connection that the game needs is nothing short of random. All I can suggest is keep trying. Just make sure that you're the one who needs to keep trying and not your friend.
If there's other ways that seems to work for people I'll edit that in as well.

As addendum, these are just the ways to fix the problem, not bypass it like port forwarding or using VPNs.

i should probably remove that now 😓 but there are a few things to try. it's worth noting though in the past few days people have had trouble connecting to steam, so first and foremost you should make sure steam is not the issue (i.e. can you send and receive messages on steam chat, etc.)

@peak isle hello i read the pins and im having those issues, only seeing the LAN option, can confirm it's not my internet, can't join through steam, but can play other steam games online. It worked before, I bought the game sometime late last year, nobody else in my house plays on Steam, haven't changed my steam name. A friend also had an issue where they didn't have the host button - they're the same for all of this.

Additionally, reinstalling the game fixed it for me, but then the next time I launched stardew it was just LAN again

For multiplayer issues we just keep restarting the game until the "Enter Invite Code" option shows up. Host should do the same so the others can join.

The first chest was fine for awhile, but that was in a different season. Maybe it’s the fall paths that are messing it up? I’ve also been leveling friendship with the villagers, if that could affect where they go. I’m just worried about losing my stuff since it’s happened more than once 😱

Hi lovely people! I just got Stardew Valley and I'm having some issues joining friends and having friends join me. I have no option to make a invite link, nor a option join through a invite link. I can't send invite to join through steam (Except remote play, which also doesn't work), though people can invite me, but when i accept the invitation, literally nothing happens in the game. I've tried updating VC++ (this was a 2018 fix), I've tried restarting my router, I've tried reinstalling (cleanly), I've restarted my PC, I've shut off all firewalls and antivirus (to try to narrow down the issue). Yet no solution so far.

Does anyone have any clues as to what more I can try?

Yeah, so your problem does seem to be the same one everyone else is having. As stupid as it might sound, I think you're just getting unlucky and have to keep trying. Alternatively, perhaps something in your network setup might be causing some delays, causing it to happen more often.

I'm highly convinced it's something that has to do with a connection between the game and steam not being made, and I reckon a bad network might exacerbate the issue. This is just from personal experience though.

Is there a known issue with dog disappearing a day or two after getting it on mobile. Not just missing on the farm, but like the event never happened. It doesnt show a dog on the profile screen. Other save on the same device had a pet, but this one and any future ones created it wont stick around. Even tried deleting and reinstalling app.

Is anyone else having an issue even starting the game in steam? Every time I try to start it it says “running” for 10 or so seconds only to revert back to “play” nothing pops up. cabin layout i would suggest maybe all near each other. profit margin keep it as is otherwise i think the game will be a bit harder and let everyone have their own money to spend. that way nobody can do anything the other doesn like in regards to money

Having an issue with the "A Winter Mystery" quest (for the magnifying glass). Can't get the cutscene to trigger to start the quest. Have tried entering the Bus Stop from the Farm (a modded farm layout if that impacts anything) during Winter while both snowing and not snowing. No cutscene. Any help?

Patience is not they key in this option, something is broken and devs can't fix it, you can search the internet, people on forums complaining about these issues since 2018 and some of them reporting back in 2021 that they still can't play it.

I just tried troubleshooting and tried deleting config file, it helped, but only for the first run, after restarting the game problem is back and deleting config file again doesn't seems to help

The current problem is caused by some kind of mismatch between the Steam API that connects to the game. Seeing the game has had this problem since way back when and it didn't start right after a new update, it's likely something that broke because of Steam. Perhaps it could be fixed by the dev (like retrying the connection to the steam API until it succeeds), but until then we're just going to have to deal.
Right now the single solution that has worked for me consistently is simply restarting your game.

Every other solution out there (given you're actually having this problem) is nothing short of a placebo, the only reason it works is because it'll randomly work.

Thanks, the host had no "invitation code generated" at the starting of the game. Leave and relaunch Steam et the game made it appear

Yeah, I had to restart the game like 2-3 times today for the "Enter Invite Code" button to show on the Co-Op Page. Every other time I start it it'll only say "Join LAN Game".

No need to restart your system; just exiting and re-starting the game (possibly a few times) does the job.

Something wonky going on there. Haven't really been able to make sense of it. Once you get to connect to your friend the co-op does work, so it's definitely not entirely broken.

If people are connecting/not hosting, I suggest getting a code rather than an invite link over Steam.

IF you wanna try a Steam Invite (the thing that you just click on in chat), make sure the game is already running and actually showing the "Enter Invite Code" button. Otherwise the Invite isn't gonna work either. At least that's my observation.

I noticed problems with dialogs with multiple choices on different languages. It shows text that does not match the choice, or that is too long to fit in the dialog box. I saw it a couple times when watching streamers playing the French version. Is there a way to fix this? Ex: festival of ice, when talking to Penny.

I'm fairly sure CA is aware of the MP issue (it'd be ludicrous if they weren't at this point). Just not sure if it can be solved short term. Could possibly mean a rewrite of code, or wait in the hopes that steam fixes whatever it's doing wrong. Or perhaps they're already testing the fix, who knows.
All you can do is make sure the right person is restarting their game. Got the invite code? It's not the host.

Yeah, I am really hoping they are at least aware of the issue. As far as I know this issue has been present for a long time (some months). And I believe this isn't caused by Steam, rather the game itself. It just feels like there haven't been any announcements, news, updates or even mentions from the developers that I have seen. Ouchies. You can try a few things. First would be going to your save files, make sure to back up said saves of the 7-10 hours progress (copy and paste the entire folder), just in case. Then remove the saves that have your farmer name and numbers that don't end in _old, and then remove the _old part from the saves left in the folder.

If that doesn't give you your old save back, I'd suggest trying ios' Time Machine on said files.

Only thing you can do is keep restarting, just make sure the right person is. If there's no invite code the host needs to restart, if it doesn't allow you to join through steam or enter a code the friend needs to restart until it works. More detailed info in pins.

For future reference, always tell steam to use the local save. The only reason you'd ever use the cloud save is if you're playing on multiple machines.

Does anybody know why I suddenly can't play Co-op with my fiance? We both have Steam Copies of the game, and we were able to play just fine yesterday, nothing changed at all, but when we woke up this morning, I went to Host the Farm, and not only did it not give him the chance to join, it won't give me an invite code for him. The settings just says "Start Local Co-op" and when I click on that, it starts up a split screen thing that then freezes my game

Not sure where to put this but something is borked for me. I had started the Mr Q quest chain, had gotten to level 100, put the battery pack in the tunnel, and I BELIEVE I did the shell, & the mayor's fridge. However, everything is GONE. There is a green book in the mayor's house at the top left of his house that allows you to give x amount of g to another player of your choosing. This will instantly give the amount so you don't have to wait till next day or whenever. Hope this helps

With a fast sword (you can do it with a slow sword, but ti takes more time), stand right in the entrance of your coop, facing the blackness, and swing your sword repeatedly. You will very slowly move forwards, and eventually you can move around in the blackness. Do it a lot, and make sure you are clear of the exit before you start moving with the moving controls
