Vector art can very much be complex, the classic recolor art tools were/are great if you know what colors you want to use and/or a little color theory to direct the output, however if you just want to experiment the beta is faster, you can still use the advanced recolor options to refine your colors with the beta.

Hey there Firefly consists of several different modules for different tasks for constructing images from scratch and Photoshop Beta just has generative fill, which is generally used to enhance alreasy existing images

I've not got the files to hand, it's a pretty general query about the tool though.

I've been doing a map with a sort of cartoon feel of a 1950s village, and I was trying to use generative to make icons on the map like "a small house" or "a church" (with qualifiers like cartoon/comicbook)

But it always just makes holes or tears in the canvas texture, or nothing recognisable at all instead of a picture. Any ideas?

Should I be generating on a separate layer, is the paper texture or something confusing it?

I've found that adding effects like yours is best done after generation. I do a lot of colour grading and if there's a grade on the image before i generate i get wild responses that just don't look right. I'd try, if possible, to generate before adding effect if possible.

I was thinking that, I just liked the idea of almost brushing in little villages and things with the tool, but it seemed to really really think what I wanted was a steel bracket printed through the fabric of the map. Which I can't fathom at all, but AI is often like that

I've managed to add villages to things but they have been photos. You could generate icons in firefly or in another photoshop project then bring them over as a workaround. Find something online that has the vibe your going for and generate what you need, then lift and shift

Aye, that what I have been doing. It's just the generative effect is seductively easy and you want to just start using it at nibpoint without having to move workflow 🙂

I think it's the cartoony scaling which throws it as much as anything else.

yeah, i recon in the future we'll be able to do that kinda thing as the tech improves, but my workflows have changed quite a bit in the past year or two thanks to ai and i'm finding that in some cases, the old 'use another flow' is quicker than trying to figure out why you've got issues. I've gone from using just premier and ae for example for edits to now using about 6 pieces for different things as its quicker than sticking to the two. Mad how fast things are changing

I'm finding that people are just using AI, and forgetting old skills entirely. Lots of people I work with are hammering away with AI creations over and over, rather than taking a step back, fixing something in 'Shop, or merging layers. It's very functional fixative behaviour. Or dogmatic entrenchment, depending on your psychological interests 🙂

Layers, it's an old map I've scanned, and I'm now rebuilding as a cartoon map. So there are is a base layer (scan) and then I'm putting in boundaries and shapes with vectors, then some pattern spraying for theme/form/depth, and then I was going to add cartoon style buildings to give it the feel of a tourist brochure from the 1950s.

And round it off with some textures from Retrosupply or something

Generative AI is probably better than I am at blending the cartoon iconography together with the feel of the whole piece though, certainly with any rapidity, I don't want to have to do dozens of little village houses.

There's no cutoff, the difference is that one is in a web browser, and one is in the photoshop interface so the way you access them is different. There are other minor differences, but probably best to start exploring first @pseudo hazel
