Today, 1644 years ago, the Battle of Adrianople (now Edirne) took place between the army of the Eastern Roman Empire led by Valens and the Goths led by Fritigern, which was one of the biggest, if not the greatest of the Roman defeats. The losses of the Goth, non-Goth and Alans tribes are unknown (but estimated around 10k+), but up to 20000 Roman veteran legionnaires and auxiliary units of Batavians, Iberians and Thracs (about 70% of the whole army), including Emperor Valens himself and his generals, fell on the Roman side. Historians then and now consider this battle as the climax of the entire Gothic War, which led to the fall of the Western Empire 98 years later.
It is assumed that the battle took place a few hours' march from Adrianople between the rivers Tonzos and Hebros, where Roman troops marched all day over difficult terrain and arrived at the scene at night tired and surprised by the Goths. Some units moved into battle without orders, assuming they could take on the "barbarians", on top of which all the fields in the area were scorched and both factions had to fight in heavy smoke
Was it 1644 years ago, or the year 1644?
Today, 1644 years ago
it happened in year 378
Roman Empire…! 😬
My cousin
Dumb question I know, but I'm a dumb person so it's balanced
no no, mb - I come across as an unsufferable PITA here.
This one is obvious to me but I also fail on so many other history facts
mb again 👍
I didn't see it like that at all. Sometimes I'd rather just ask a dumb question I don't know and engage in the conversation instead of spending 10 seconds on Google to find out without making myself look dumb
Why was my post deleted?
Because is crosspost

Why does everybody joke about getting drafted to vietnam, WW2 drafts were worse
never really thought of that
but i guess thats kinda true seeing as to how brutal the pacific front was for us
Each individual soldier/marine avg 28 days of combat during the entirety of WWII. Each individual soldier/marine during Vietnam avg around 267 days of combat in just a year. Something tells me being drafted during Vietnam was worst lol
Not to mention that during WWII people were (more) willing to fight because they (in general) supported the war against Hitler. While (in general) most people were against the was in the pacific.
Most people were for the pacific war considering Japan directly attacked US land
@vivid siren Can't lose if there was no objective. Was apparently more of a distraction the the Bush admin that they broke and couldn't fix enough to pull out.
Sad story. There was a similar problem in Vietnam, where the goal was clear - to defeat the communists and preserve at least the south of the country under the installed government. Maybe the army professionals (or people who are in the army professionally as staff and the like) are largely paper tigers. For you as a member of the combat unit, every mistake can cost you life, but in the less readable positions it doesn't matter anymore how capable you are or how efficient you are. Even if you had 10 promotions.
Can't WIN a war unless you are willing to wage an actual war. Didn't in Vietnam, didn't in Afghanistan. Also made huge mistakes in Afghanistan from the jump sending so few combat soldiers. It's the entire reason the Taliban slipped away into Pakistan.
How long were you in Afghanistan?
I am surprised that people are willing to participate in such nonsense. Then I am even more surprised that half of the society believes that they are winning somewhere for 20 years even though there are clear indicators that they are not (territory under the control of the Taliban).
I was only there for 7 months in 02.
I think that's a misconception of what was going on at the time. Most people here in the states didn't think we were winning. I can't stress enough, there was nothing to win.
More of a "You broke it, you can't leave till you fix it".
Most people? I can't dispute it, because I don't know society in US. In our country, people regularly believed in this based on their pro-Western political mindset.
Basically, no one even questioned it, no one from politics, the military, the media.
The soldiers on the ground from what i heard knew it wasnt the same war their fathers and forefathers fought. There is hardly justice or heroism in war. Mans leave broken and feeling defeated. I wish to talk to more veterans and talk about the pre war and post war effects
But all that info is from accounts from middle east. Shit wasn't pretty

The Royal Marine Commandos of Port en Bessin 1944 Then and Now
https://youtu.be/7dG6hOz_gvs
Two recent interviews that I have done with Steve Bernston, Combat Correspondent of the 1st Marine Division. These interviews covered some of his stories in Sea Tiger, how he wrote, combat with E/2/1, Operation Medina, Quang Tri, Con Thien, and the differences in fighting along the DMZ compared to Da Nang.
Today's interview with Michael Harris, the FO from 2/5, was phenomenal. Today, we talked about some maps and images of him in the field, his first wound, his first significant operation, an untold tale of a posthumous Navy Cross awarded to an officer with E/2/5, and the difficulties Mike had with PTSD after the war. Please pay close attention to the video beginning at 01:15:43. Mike goes into great detail about his PTSD struggles and the effects the war had on him and his family. It is quite emotional to hear this portion of his narrative since it is one of the most profound and stunning accounts I have ever heard a veteran recount PTSD.
In the coming weeks, stay tuned for more from Mike Harris.
I had the incredible opportunity today to start an interview series with General James Livingston, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his conduct in May 1968 while serving as the Company Commander for Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines. A truly modest guy, General Livingston has an amazing tale to share. Since this conversation was conducted over the phone and taped, I made a podcast so that anyone could listen to it. Watch this space for more from me, other veterans, and General Livingston!
In this episode, Steve and I discuss the beers that he enjoyed in country, some terminology, some of his more humorous memories, and how he ended up getting into Hue City for R&R and the Tet Offensive, and a friend of his, Tom Young, who worked at the AFVN Station in Hue City.
WW2 believed in the legitimacy of war, The Vietnam generation saw it as the sham that it was.
Let's not treat this channel as ad space for your own channel though. It is more a space to discuss a historical topics/events and while mentioning you got related material midst conversation could be OK, your listing gets a bit over the top.
I see your point, but no one has posted in here in over a month.
True. But maybe try starting a conversation.
I’m just posting relevant primary source history as I come in to contact with it and sharing it for the education of others. If it’s an issue I won’t post here
If you'd like to discuss history, there are loads of people who would engage with you. The vast majority don't want to engage with a YT channel.
I have no idea if this would even be considered the right channel, but it is what it is; Does anybody know if the US Army still used the H-34 in the late 70-80s? Can't find any information regarding its service on google
hm, I would have figured it would have been much later on, like in the mid 80s or such. Also very helpful, thank you

Good day. Bąk II - a Polish pre-war motor glider designed by engineer Antoni Kocjan. The most modern motor glider constructed before WW2 in Europe and a turtstic glider for exploring Europe and had records. It's flying again! 4/1 #History #avgeeks #aviation #WW2
Rebuilt on the basis of the original technical documentation preserved before its destruction during WW2. Rebuilt thanks to the Polish Sky Monuments Foundation. Thanks to the speed of 152 km/h and easy flying and acrobatics! None of the built motor gliders survived WW2 4/2

considering the YDB https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HytJn6uaRk (watch it whole before dismiss)
it's very plausible , we know there are huge craters in greenland and canada under ice too
ofcourse not 'it were aliens' ... e.g. the moai figures at Easter Island were easily movable by just dozen of men (all you need is just knowledge of balance and ropes)
proved e.g. by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavel_Pavel#Experimental_archaeology he moved 30 tons rock with just 6 people and was sure he could move 800 tons with around 160
the stone cutting techniques aren't anything mysterious too, same goes with placement and transportation
i remember that for the pyramids clever systems of counterweights and layer shell was used, may explains the need for the internal 'ramp' tunel
our ancestors were way more clever than most people want to admit, way sooner than most people realize
devices like this one were more likely more common way sooner than 2k years ago https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism
it would also explain why some of the Greek and Roman empires had quite advanced mathematics, physics and even doctors (they were capable of brain, eye and teeth surgeries)
not always because they were first, but because they learned it via trade or absorbed via conquest
knowledge which was 'lost' for another 16-20 centuries
ie. at minimum 1-2 advanced civilizations were erased 1600 BCE https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_eruption
that Minoan civilization was capable of building cities with complex layouts, drainage, sewage, doors & windows with lintel, multifloor, terraces
also from the so far known information Women were probably on similar equality as Men in those (or the status was high enough to not be what was later)
likely Crete culture was what was leftover of Minoan civilization (tho most of the northern ports were obliterated by tsunami triggered by exploding Thera)

@velvet imp I guess the question would be for you. Do you think the onset of conquest was more of a loss or gain per conquest?
Like the Visigoths loved Rome, they loved it's culture. It's what allowed a lot of that knowledge to be some what preserved. But they didn't have the knowledge themselves to maintain it, hence the dark ages.
it depends on what type of conquest, for example Mongol expansion and also Golden Horde were equivalent of extinction and extermination events
total war, included biological warfare and erased whole empires not just cities with people
I'm pretty convinced humanity is in a great filter event right now
Oh I agree, science and advancement is being attacked. But I think the internet shelters a lot of that.
Can't burn the internet per say vs books.
e.g. Attack on Abbasid Caliphate https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Baghdad_(1258)
Don't think humanity has more than a couple dozen years
I will see food shortages and huge droughts and heat events in my life.
the outcome was not just slaughter of all civilians in the city but surrounding areas and it's beleived to be reason why the irrigation channels in the whole iraq ceased to exist
@warm bough yup
why, simply because there were no people to maintain it and thus desert took over
I never understood the Mongols in there thinking. I read a couple books about them. Mainly https://www.amazon.com/Mongols-Islamic-World-Conquest-Conversion/dp/030012533X Book
sure the Mongols left alive Christians and allies but that was just fraction of the population
Like how could they be so civilized with adapting stuff, but also be like "Welp you killed our messenger, guess we got to erase you".
also this specific case obliterated the moderate modern branch of islam culture and science which tossed it back centuries
Yep....to think there was a time when religion and science were perfectly fine with each other.
Greeks have even predicted the idea of atoms, just as a side discussion between philosphers.
but modern physics is kinda moving away from the atomic worldview, especially if string theory is true
but it weren't just this case, e.g. the attacks vs kingom in Georgia by mongols literally obliterated one of the oldest christian kindom, twice
and that gave rise of Timur, his armies for example were responsible for tens of millions of dead ... probably 5-10% of mankind at that time
and this is just history we have records of ...
I mean it was a dog eat dog world out there.
one day mankind reach stars and realize that inbetween those beautiful sparks they wanted to explore, in the cold dark Universe, terrific monsters live and they will destroy anything humans love and then kill all what remains ...
ofcourse there will be lot of clubbing vs own specie on various levels cause we have tendency to not learn from our past enough fast
unfortunately I don't think humanity has a future in interstellar space
We are progressing as a society to some degree. Warfare has gone waaay down since our ancient times.
we have chance, we have passion, adaptability, resilience and are on edge of crazy insane 😉
maybe our AI descendants will make it
I don't think we'll get that far
Warfare has gone waaay down since our ancient times.
it shifted to psychological, instead of physical
unfortunately I don't think humanity has a future in interstellar space
not if we kill all recourses in this solar system before we gained the tech for interstellar travel
which will most likely happen
the the killing and wasting
Yea, ideology conflicts happen, but there is a big difference IMO that I will argue all my life with some one, vs well I can't win so I'll just kill you.
psychological and biological / chemical warfare was known for mileanias, it just wasn't named that way
Sam Harris' latest podcast has some interesting discussion regarding existential threats to humanity
it was just matter of how get hold of well fortified position ? well let's lob in some dead corpses of various beings, extremens and such, let's poison the wells etc.
they didn't need to know what microbe or bacteria is, it was about the result
I think the issue for us now is we have conquered most of the immediate threats to society. Now we have to deal with the long term ones.
Like if Covid-19 was dropping people left and right, there would be zero problem getting people to quarantine and wear mask.
Now we have to deal with the long term ones.
human race...
sorry...
@ionic eagle ye but that fits more into #offtopic_politics channel haha (gotcha)
see? told ya that history and politics are very tight 😂
constructive talk about actual disease in offtopic channel is more valuable than random politics
I guess this is example of me comparing historically what humans actually have properly corrected vs what we drag our feet with.
and this is why dark ages and burning books, libraries and killing everyone (clan, group, religion, ethnics) always was bad idea
only really wise leader would realize how absurdly stupid waste that was
now, ofcourse exclude wars which were directly related to lack of resources (water, food, livestock, fertile soil)
and this is why dark ages and burning books, libraries and killing everyone (clan, group, religion, ethnics) always was bad idea which is why it keeps happening again and again and again
btw quoting is > not ``
cause generally mankind had lack of very wise leaders long term ... 🙂
best example: the effect of quarantine during an pandemic. history has proven it works, but "leaders" ignore the facts
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/2020/03/how-cities-flattened-curve-1918-spanish-flu-pandemic-coronavirus/
Well to be fair wise leaders tend to be kind, which then tolerate the bad eggs that eventually unsurp the power.
and usually even if ther was wise leader capable to establish successful (wise) dynasty, sooner or later buerocracy would ruin it from inside like parasite or cancer
or before that happened some 'incident' would struck, usually in form of poison or assasin
I know Alexander the Great pretty much was like "Well I know I can't convince you to work together" to his generals.
before he died that is.
well he wasn't best of dealing with others either and not listening enough either ... but he was good on military tactics and empire expansion
but the hot head cost him life and several lives of great leaders including successor
Definitively lived the Kleos life
I'm trying to think of this specific Turkish/and or Sultan that tried to solve the whole issue of fragmenting his kingdom.
Not sure what his name was, but the story goes that he pretty much went on killing all of his family except for the one he wanted to inherit the throne, then that person died before he did.
singular point of failure ... 😉
I don't think will ever solve the failure of the state/government though. What we can do is set the standards high enough that we don't devolve.
I mean China as a whole has went through tons of rulers, but ultimately China is still China.
Japan has definitely fared better culturally vs some other countries. Only going through one caste shake up, and a very passive culture change.
True, but we are up there too 🇬🇧
Think it goes Japan, Cambodia, Marroco, some other country then Britain I believe.
i would say that nearly any civilization went thru own dark-times period but each time there was total cut of continuity it was massive race back to near-starting line
while you may get easily wood cutter within generation, it will take time before someone build up water powered mill or forge
It makes me wounder why governments haven't invested in compiling knowledge for the sake of quick recovery.
they do, some of them, since we got nukes
the real question still remains , if those who survive will be able read / recover it
As long as its in english or better yet binary :D
with manuals/books with picture it was simpler as the amount of information was many orders magnitude lower than now
But it comes down to people forgetting history many times and doing a "Year Zero" type thing nowadays
So deliberately destroy the history and knowledge of the past
I mean there is history then there is scientifical knowledge.
I guess it would just have to be a cou toss. Do you keep the knowledge pure and strictly science or add history in assuming humans would never change.
You have to add history given that we are just another animal that without restraints will revert back to our past... BTW, that is science too and demonstrably provable
Technocrats may deny that, but they've generally been proven wrong every time they have
Norway has the seed archive, so you (the norwegians) can start growing plants after the apocalypse, or something
Also the Internet is a lot about distributed data storage, though I guess more about instant access
Might be a good time to check how is your local mirroring (hint hint wink wink; I hope I didn't conjure up the apocalypse 😅 )
the seed archive was on brink being washed out by flood from melting iceberg, they somewhat late realized that construction didn't account fo event of e.g. tsunami or floods 😉
Lesson learned: to survive an apocalypse, build A LOT of redundancy
Somebody needs to make a strategy game out of this
And what happens to your internet archives and data storage if they are powered up when nuclear weapons or EMP devices are exploded... especially since governments in the west decided that EMP-hardening was too expensive after the end of the Cold War?
Humanity often isn't very good in preparing for tail risk scenarios
Mainly because they forget history tbh
Like many nations didn't stockpile masks etc before the pandemic
I'm not sure if it's a problem of memory or analysis
Fukushima designers didn't account for major tsunami, because "lol it happens only once per millennium"
It's generally a conceit by those in charge that they know better than those that came before them
Which btw, re: Fukushima was a valid assumption... And the "disaster" was bad, but nothing compared to the human-caused Chernobyl incident
But then the Germans said that their nuke plants weren't hardened against earthquakes so they would shut them down 🤦 Science...
I am so worried that fusion will be dead on arrival in this world that we live in...
But I got OT... sorry

@oak marsh that's where stuff like hologram engraved in resilient crystal comes to fruit but we moving toward the #offtopic_science channel ... i see ... pattern 😉
🙃
on the topic of the utopia that is a "wise leader" - rules for rulers lays it out pretty well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rStL7niR7gs
the only way to achieve that is to "get rid" of all ambitious and power hungry people... which is bound to fail
honestly utopia is scifi and usually it ends as dictatorship dystopia faking the utopia 😉
i would be fine with somewhat optimal merge of all the 'good' parts of the failed systems
what are the good parts of the failed systems? Arent the good parts those that the system didnt achieve in the end?
Merge of all good parts already sounds like an utopia
the desires of individuals to dominate and rule/ stay in power just break every system in the end.
Although there might be a limit how much breakage is allowed. Assuming you are talking in one generation or one election period time span
every little break erodes the system further
just like with democracy - capitalism combo we have now.
there are good parts in most of the systems, it just depends how large the % was vs the bad parts ...
A catch of a system is the parts hang together...
Historically the longest lasting systems have been the Byzantine Empire and Pandyan Empire. Both lasted 1000+ years, but both sorta just shrank in influence as time went on.'
caveat: dont conflate "system" with "empire/kingdom". like... the danish royal dynasty has been ruling for a loong time, but the system they're presiding over changed a lot from feudal to absolute monarchy to liberal democracy. Conversely, Persia was part of a gazillion empires, but the bureaucracy / way of administration is said to have changed very little in pre-modern times
For sure, I guess I'm looking at them as the system works within their own creators and not of conquerors.
That topic is actually very interesting one with the regards of the fall of Rome. Particularly how a lot of regional and local restates started becoming the first steps into the feudal system.
Certainly an interesting period. Could read something on how the feudal system got started and how it operated 🤔
In basic.
The system started forming as the Visigoths sacked Rome and pretty much sped up the already eroding governmental system.
In the country side you had fortified compounds of Romans who owned lots of land. Along with typically a small cadre of well trained/paid soldiers who guarded it.
As things sorta fell apart, the local farmers started looking for basically anybody to protect them. The legions were not coming to save them. So they turned to these people for protection, and sorta agreement of "We give you food, you protect us with your guards".
because we were talking about factory stuff in "other games"...

it always amazes me that there are still all kinds of "dinosaur machines"/plants from the 30's to 60's working every day with only minor alterations.
I love analog machines.
Also, it's crazy how detailed studied the DoD was to Germany when it came to the war effort, having so many specialized units following the main forces.
they knew there was some serious tech to be gained, therefore a considerable orchestrated hunt for any technological material and personel and natural resources. And the powers to be were already thinking about the next enemy...
If americans had known that there was uranium in far eastern germany they would have never left that to the soviets.
I honestly think WWII is very underrated as how crazy it was. It wasn't just about the battles, but the global mobilization(No DLC Pun intended). That happened, like Afghanistan? Sure it's considered long running, but imagine coming to work at a Ford plant and your foreman tells people your now working on tanks.
wasn't it the industry created by WWII that brought the world out of the great depression?
Not "industry" specifically, "successful" wars have generally been beneficial to economies.
My stock in Oshkosh went from $11 to $65
Op Phantom Fury occurred in the latter part of 2004.
of course its profitable, which is why there are way too many people that want war, simply because it makes them very rhich
Well, 1% gets rich, 99% lose everything...
yes, and the 1% have the greater influence a war happening (in these times anyway)
I honestly think WWII is very underrated as how crazy it was. It wasn't just about the battles, but the global mobilization(No DLC Pun intended). That happened, like Afghanistan? @ionic eagle Could be we've come back to normalcy only in the recent decades, and post-USSR. Life doesn't primarily orient around major armed blocks looking to gut each other, so we start to understand how scary the ww2 and how crazy the cold war period was, and all the related insanity like atomic weapons etc.
I mean we don't have nuclear shelter drills anymore, and it's not being discussed in schools so there is that.
I agree with your statement
@ionic eagle so the way I see it christianity is a polytheistic religion because of the trinity. I'd say islam is fairly monotheistic, though I think Allah refers to himself in plural form which is debatable, some say it's royal plural. there's a pantheon in mormonism. New-age is pretty syncretic so you have tons of deities. Gnosticism has the christian god the "demiurge" at the bottom of the divine order of beings with many emanations of "true god" above him like sophia, christ, aeons etc.
I would say your some what right, although I believe the trinity is used to explain how god is called many names, but there is only one true god according to cathlics.
I guess what would we assume is a god? Because all the religions mention believe in 1 true god in literal sense, everything else is below that station.
I tend to view it strictly from the scriptures and records.
As those are sorta the only actual documentation religions have grounds within history.
I read something long time ago that used the bible to show there was scripture indicating other deities in judaism/christianity
lots of "heretical" stuff was scrubbed from the bible early on
jehova was just a jewish tribal god
Yea, check out the Old Testament. Pretty much typical ancient stone people to death sorta views.
For the most part Christianity, and almost all the other mono religions started out pretty open. I mean you have to be when your customer base still believes in Odin, Aries, Mars, ect. When your not in a political power base to enforce your more conservatives views, you have to cadre to those around you.
yes, christianity incorporated a lot of pagan traditions to become more acceptable, like Yule for example
It's honestly amazing how Christianity went from being a small predicated religion to something that use to influence the world at a global scale.
Well the smallest spark can start the biggest forest fire
@ionic eagle Christianity became one of the largest religions because of the colonys. The story behind that is not so amazing
It's more in the fact that early Christians were hunted left and right. If it wasn't for Rome switching religions, they could have easily been snuffed out or forced to a less influential area.
could haaave, please 😖 I'm not British and it still hurts
I mean in the beginning yes but Christians ruled the world because everyone who wasnt Christian was burned alive
I mean in the beginning yes but Christians ruled the world because everyone who wasnt Christian was burned alive
@sinful saffron No
well, he's not wrong tho. just think about the cathars. they where christians also but got killed / burned because they had a different view / interpretation of the religion
christians in the early and mid middle ages where totalitarian. they did not accept other religions beside the one that was declared the "only religion" by the leaders (kings, ect.)
judaism kind of was allowed to be practiced, but we all know how this worked out in the last 500ish years
but beside that... nope...
The religion itself didn't simply spread by eliminating competitors. The Crusades for example, didn't see the entire middle east, or even portions of it get converted to Christianity. It could be considered one the first religions to really organize and whole sale itself. Like compared to some other religions that were more grounded in reality like Greece and Rome. The monotheistic idea of "Wait, doesn't matter if I'm a poor farmer or king? As Long as I praise this dude I get into paradise?" Was very strong compared to other religions.
Add the supporting logistics of the church who learned from Rome itself how to support long term campaigns. You bet it's still crazy how it became a dominate force.
Like the way I see it, it really was just the luck of the dice. Any religion could have done it, it's just who was ambitious enough to convince those in power it needed to be spread to the world.
lol, did you just use a bot to delete your messages when you could of done it by hand? XD
COULD OF 🔨 🔨 🔨
and yes :p
no seriously, type "could" on your mobile, then space, and "of" should appear as a suggestion. hold tap on it, delete suggestion. there is -no- way in the English language for this word to be here (unless "could of course")
there is stuff that as a non-english speaking that I don't even understand how you can get wrong, like your and you're, of that ^ is it because of a common bad habit or do they teach it in schools?
@ionic eagle I mean the current countrys in Africa are mostly christian and that is because of the colonnys that the European empires had
I mean the current countries in Africa are mostly christian
no, not the countries, but general population
Yea, because colonialism wasn't really a religious goal. The church just piggie backed on it.
Also look at that Germany. It's like they had a religious war or something with a certain person named Luthar 😛
pfff... naaah... fake news 😄
the 30y war (1618–1648) was just made up by some greedy peepz
oh, and luther was not involved
It's like Europe was tired of religion pulling strings.
Which makes me wounder why the middle east never did the same...
Glares at Radical Islam (only the terrorist organizations guys, I have zero problems with the religion or its followers)
did i hear Lutheranism? looks at my pfp
I'm speaking more in the historical/political context of Islam. Like what motivated England, and most of Europe to push religion out their government institutions. Vs many middle eastern countries that kept a lot of the doctrine into their government institutions.
It might help some issues but it could also worsen others
I mean I have learned on school that the European empires brough culture and religion to the colonnys
Ah so what you learned is false
brough culture and religion to the colonnys
*brought western culture and religion
More like forced their religion
btw the conflict in the Middle East is pure Political
Agreed, most religious wars are just a excuse to rally up the mass.
the Shia and the Sunnies have lifed in the Middle East for a thousand years and then after the cold war the conflicts started to begin
Think of it this way Creed. Wars like with the Taliban and such are just "there interpretation of Islam"
btw the conflict in the Middle East is pure Political
it strongly depends on the time period. if you look back at the crusades, politics had nothing to do with it
That is true
Yup basically
I am talking about the Saudi and the Iran conflict
Crusades were basically the Pope trying to figure out a way for Europeans to stop killing each other.
which is the biggest conflict in the region rn
Yes and his solution was...kill people
lol
It's also the last sorta stakes the Papacy had at trying to be a relevant political power.
But Aryan the conflicts between the two have gone on for millennia now
But like I have lifed 4 years in Iraq and I have never heared that someone was killed or something else bc of his relgion besides of ISIS ofc
The Conflict started with the Iranian revolution
Accurate Sabre
Crusades were basically the Pope trying to figure out a way for Europeans to stop killing each other.
well, yes... so it was sort of a political move on the european battlefield, but actions in akkon, jerusalem, aschkedon, ect where totally religious dominated moves
ohoh
Because they wanted to take back the holy land
Like there is a "rumor" where Kurds says that Gengis Khan failed with the conqeur of Erbil, I cant find any documents about it but I was just curious if that is true
Because they wanted to take back the holy land
*some place that was occupied by moslems and happens to be the birthplace of christianity also...
That is actually a good question.
Like there is a "rumor" where Kurds says that Gengis Khan failed with the conqeur of Erbil, I cant find any documents about it but I was just curious if that is true
lemme look
Lol
So I know Mongols pretty much Yeeted a good chunk of Iran
according to wiki the mongols never managed to fully take erbil, but went on numerous raids on it
can you send a link in here?
My source book 'The Mongoles and the Islamic World' which I got in my hands right now. states they own all of..
that territory
it's obviously german 😄
lol
According to the secret history of the Mongols, Genghis Khan and his successor Ögedei Khan are said to have given the order to attack Baghdad. [10] In 1236, an army under General Chormaqan attacked the city of Erbil on the northern edge of the caliphate. [11] Afterwards, the Mongols raided Erbil almost every year and came to the city walls of Baghdad. [12] [13] In 1238 and 1245, the Caliphate Army defeated sections of the Mongols. [14] [15]```
I mean now we know the general who was in charge
General Chormaqan
I mean so they were only defeated between 1238 and 1245
ahahahah just got a warning from Arma for profanity
only because I talked about the things what happend in History
No, it was from me and because you used profanity.
this includes harassment, name calling, racism, sexism, homophobia, other derogatory remarks (profanity) or any insults.```
And zero means zero. Thanks!
only because I talked about the things what happend in History
From history, I know that people who simply lie about their wrongdoing and make false accusations against moderators like this, will usually get themselves removed permanently quite quickly
Aight so what did I do I still dont understand
Posted profanity. The F word
Because every thing what I said is that I have learned on school
A weird school you have there if you learn such words there
Yea I mean we have one of the best schools in the world here in the Netherlands
I went to a Dutch school as well, but I've learned to follow #rules and don't drop F-bombs 🤷♂️
But back on topic; the history of the Mongols is actually very interesting and impressive.
Too bad I didn't learn a lot about it
It's definitely interesting, but it wasn't one those "positive" conquest for sure.
imagine getting raided every year as an ordinary village/townsman...
also, about that (mongol invading islamic world) - here is a video animating the battle that stopped the mongols 1260
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNZofJbM0Q4
There is quiet a few historians that compare armies on the move to plagues, even if it's your own army. XD
After Rome, most armies couldn't really afford long term campaigns, and hardly even long range ones.
Even Rome has a limit to the number of armies it could maintain on a campaign at one time, which is why their policing and law was so important. They would be spread thin in newer provinces, so any uprising that got out of control...

Then again on the plus side you’re dead so I guess it’s not a worry lol
or if you end up in hell and it's the same world except you'll be waiting for arma 4 for an eternity

What on earth happened to get a month of text deleted?!
@obsidian talon what do you mean?
hmm… indeed
What happened?
history, written by the victor 😛 /jk
two offtopic crosspost spam messages from today were deleted, nothing else
its propaganda dont believe him
Funny on that topic, a lot of people mention bias history, but once you get deep into history you realize sometimes the winner isn't just the victor but the person who chose to actually record it.
The other curious thing is how some people say “history is written by the victor. X isn’t so bad” when in reality, X was so much worse then the victors understand
"deep into history" if you count the era where writing a thing down was kind of novel, and the writing surviving the years - then sure. Not quite applicable where everyone writes down things about everything
speaking of "written by the victor"

I wonder if the current pandemic will be a major event in history like the Spanish flu...
In the next few hundred years will the 2020 pandemic be a part of history?
Then what are the requirements for something to be big enough to make it into the history books?

In 1865, a Native American named Donehogawa of the Seneca wrote the Articles of Surrender at Appomattox signed by Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant that ended the Civil War. Predictably, the U.S. denied him civil rights before, during, and after that war despite his service

On this day in US history we celebrate the brave men who sacrificed their lives so that we could live together in harmony. Gone but never forgotten.
Thank you
Excuse me but what events are you referring?
d-day maybe?
True, I wouldn't say it's only US history.
Definitely more "world history"
Heck, it's more Canadian history than US history.
how so?
looking at the numbers, the US landed more troops than Canada, the british in turn landing more than US.
so it is perhaps more british history than US history
"more history than X" ... there is no such thing. History is not an e-peen contest
Huh, I seem to remember that the Canadians landed more.
Anyway, it's hardly any one nation's history. Heck, even more so than American, British, Canadian history one could say it's French history since that's where it happened.
It's World history...
all talking about russia, america and britain. waddabout germany on dday

also german so yeah
someone may explain me the sense of pride month? hope this is the most fitting channel
nope, not really
google: "hello mister google, what is the meaning of pride months? thank you"
The only reason Germany lost Normandy is because he didn't listen to his generals and let their tanks shore up the defenses. Hitler was convinced by the Allies 'Army' staging across the channel from Caen and demanded more troops be stationed there. Thinking that the miles of bunkers, barbed wire, cannons, machine guns, and trenches would stop any landing attempts on the beaches. of course we all know how that worked out
Hitler, while evil, was VERY good at speeches and boosting the morale of people around him. He was a horrid tactician and denied the continued research of weapons like the STG-44 and the ME-262
Weapons that could have possibly won the war if he approved their development much sooner
The only reason they were created in the first place is their engineers and designers went behind Hitler's back after he said no and continued working on them to the point where they could show him just how powerful and effective they were. Only then did he approve
even IF everything was in place for defending the landings, sooner or later Western Allies would have made it onto the Land. Strategically (resources / production, esp. fuel) the war was already lost for germany at that point. The only big difference it would have made in how post war germany / europe would have looked - possibly with the Soviets controlling most of germany.
Another thing to notice was even if they managed to beat back the allies at the beaches, they where losing to the Soviet’s regardless. They where still being pushed back.
Wasn't the German's Army more hopful plan (Excluding Hitler's Dillusions at this point) to basically force a stalemate?
Like I believed they were just hoping they could blunt the pressure from the Allies, so they could free up troops to hold the soviets back and why doing so negotate with the allies.
Hi guys! I am looking for structure of Czech mechanized platoon (squad weapons, structure, like squadleader, fireteam leader, etc), any idea? I was googling some time, but didn't find anything about it.

what aircraft was used to fight the mig21?
is it the f4 phantom
if yes , was there any NATO aircraft that was used to fight mig21
Lots of aircraft have been in combat against MiG-21s. US F-104 Starfighter, French Mirage III and British Lightning were probably the most directly comparable fighter aircraft used by NATO when the MiG-21 was introduced. The Swedish Draken too - which was operated by Denmark as a NATO member. Of those, MiG-21s saw combat against F-104 (during India-Pakistan conflict where the MiGs used by India were largely successful against Pakistani F-104s, and kind of the Vietnam war too - but Vietnamese MiG pilots allegedly avoided engagements with F-104 flown by USAF pilots) and Mirage III (during wars against Israel, where Israeli Mirages were largely successful against Egyptian and Syrian MiG-21s). F-4 Phantom came later
Normandy, NWE and Italian Campaign 1943-1945.

They were the most fucked up in poland
I was joking when i said least fucked up
They were a special detachment of the militia
"Communist Gestapo" was one of their nicknames

posted in history because it repeats itself
We've had three main 'police' branches during commies reign. They were MO, ORMO, ZOMO (Police, something like volunteer amateur police, hardcore people beaters). People joked that these organisations names before abbrevating them were They Can Beat You, These Ones Also Can Beat You, Especially These Can Beat You (Mogą Obić, Oni Również Mogą Obić, Zwłaszcza Oni Mogą Obić).

not sure if thats the right topic. are private military companies able to do warcrimes?
to specify if a pmc did a warcrime would they be sued the same as a regular army?
As far as I'm aware they're liable to civilian courts, not military. Military courts are separate from Civilian and would never deal with civilians (PMC are not military, they are civilian)
I don't know how PMC companies are able to get away with the shit they get away with... maybe because that shit is all outside the country they're based in?
yeah im kinda interested thats why i was asking. also i suppose they are pretty often being covered by countries itself
If they're lobbying the relevant politician then I'd say that's a safe bet.
even though it is writing history, I am not sure if this is too recent to be #offtopic_history "worthy"
the question/topic itself being however very interesting…
ive tried to use the most fitting channel
np, but I am afraid it would go #offtopic_politics
there is simply no channel for a general conversation I would think ; now if you asked for an accurate scenario depiction this could be #offtopic_arma for this scope 🙂
shall i continue there then?
Academi was an American private military company founded on December 26, 1996 by former Navy SEAL officer Erik Prince as Blackwater, renamed as Xe Services in 2009 and known as Academi since 2011 after the company was acquired by a group of private investors. The company received widespread notoriety in 2007, when a group of its employees killed...
How do the offtopic channels that discuss historical subjects that includes politics not go against the supposed "rule" #5? Perhaps this server contradicts itself on its own rule in this way.
historical politics is more like talking about historic facts then about political preferences of yourself
theres a difference between historiography and historical analysis
and then theres political opinion
Anyone here got a good rundown on how nazi germany invaded all those countries, or the soviet union invaded all those countries, or the invasion of georgia? Just curious for historic purposes ofc 😉
speed and combined arms was the key
I think he meant they started the war by what were essentially false flag operations, most specifically they attacked to defend the "ethnic germans/russians" that were being "prosecuted/ethnic cleansed".
An accusation that Russia did not long ago concerning Ukraine
and that far-right extremists are doing right now in France, buuut let's not delve back into #offtopic_politics again 😉
talkin about yesterday?
basically blitzkrieg combined with acting unexpectable
especially being the attacker combined with acting unexpected does a good job on negating the defenders natural advantage. this together with speed so the defender cant really do a lot but only react leads to especially nazi germanys really fast ways of conquering
also kinda interesting chart i found about nowadays (quite interesting here is to see the old axis powers)
ah bad @radiant rapids may i send you a chart so you can post that?
sure
thx
(still not to be turned into nowadays politics ofc 😉)
sure just wanted to link that more to the history part of the countries since history is basically the reason of politics
will keep it like that
it was more of a general statement for others, I trust you to know how it works already 😉
Japan 11%
gg
thats the result of a country nuked twice (sorry that was a bad one)
So we're still living in 2D
all those memes about german reparations being tons of money and japanese ones being anime
btw @radiant rapids was the chat in offtopics_politics really that bad?
at some/many point/s yeah, hence the decision to shut it down
I don't think it is accessible to the mere mortal
b b b-but i dont wanna die
understandable. kinda sad although maybe good to keep such stuff on twitter
I believe they've been pushing that line since December.
I suggest you take a look into the 2008 Russian-Georgian War, the parallels with recent news should be pretty alarming.
What about Poland ˋ39?
Well, kinda. But the Russian-Georgian war is more related to the current context
NATO invading Libya, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. That's fine, Russia invading Ukraine. OMG the world is about to go under... xD
btw how old is that chart, and were the responses recorded before or after the russians started moving troops to the border (likelihood of invasion increasing)
however I do think it is quite interesting to see the old axis powers. I believe that everyone loses in war, and that obv the loosers loose the most. And to me, the most impressive is the countries that got invaded by germany: poland...
(lose*! not undermining your point)
sry english is not my first language
Sad to see that 85 million people would fight for a fascist regime. Interesting that Vietnam and Finland has always scored very high on these over the years afaik.
I wouldn't compare an arguably genuine attempt at stopping rampant genocide to a fascist regimes imperialist aspiration. Regardless, the examples you mentioned did receive heavy criticism, so the strawman you're trying to pull obviously failed here.
The sad truth is that the arab spring did actually have potential for good, if it wasn't for the pesky islamists turning it into an islamic revolution and away from the path to freedom. Then again it'd probably just have been wishful thinking to not see something like ISIS coming.
@graceful hatch history, not politics. (I missed that one)
history, not politics.
sorry but I have to bring the shields up quite early on this topic
I wasn't sure what was allowed to be called history, 10 yrs could be a lot of time mb.
no worries, let's say that the reply would not have been triggered had the first message not be posted 😉
thanks for your understanding 👍
Time to learn some history
1991-1993 War in Abkhazia
1992 Transistria War
1994-1996 First Chechen War
1999-2009 Second Chechen War
2008 Russo-Georgian War
And then we have Ukraine, but I won't speak about it since for now it's politics - in several years, it will become history.
dude what happened
@sand flint please. educate if you will, but do not attack.
it's just tough to see this type of comments because it's genuinely part of a larger psyop and he's one of the people allowing these type of things to happen with that kind of rhetoric. My friends right might be dead right now because of a fascist dictator and he's sitting here spewing fascist propaganda disguised as discussion. Either way can't we just delete comments in here that won't be about history anymore, because history repeats itself and right now it's looking a lot like when the soviet union invaded Poland or Finland.
#offtopic_politics is closed for a reason, this is a simple videogame server after all, with allowed offtopic science/history channels.
I obviously do understand your point of view, but I also think better places exist to "really" talk about the current events.
and yes, non-history comments will be removed from here 👍
Oof lmao deleted channel
long before the recent events should I say
Yeah. I’ve been checking around just to see how different communities react. As it turns out, Arma 3 discord is so segmented and compartmentalized that I cant find anything here lol
Since there's not much history here I will post some interesting reads about historical events that we must never let happen again.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. May Europe never forget that freedom isn't free ❤️
The history of the beginning of the modern Russian state elite
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Russian_constitutional_crisis
Don't forget that time putin used the fsb to bomb moskva, killing ~300 and injuring over 1000 people. This false flag attack was used to justify invading chechya which ultimately lead to him becoming president.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_apartment_bombings
There were many cases throught history, when powerhungry people would fake some disaster to boost their popularity, and it's unfortunate that such tactics are being utilised even in modern world
Supporting nationalists on both sides of the conflict is a classic tactic used by Nazi Germany during World War II and by the US in the Balkans in the 1990s. Medieval patriotism always leads to medieval conflicts.
what are you babbling about?
If nationalists (schizo-paranoid patriots) are supported in your country and exactly the same nationalists are sponsored in a neighboring country, then rest assured that you are being prepared for war.
this makes absolutely no sense
let's talk about history
☝️
@calm bone History please, not current events
so from ± 50yo to infinity yo
quite interesting read about civilians and armed civilians legal status https://airwars.org/news-and-investigations/civilian-status-in-the-ukraine-conflict-a-rough-guide/
No comments allowed?
No comments allowed - see my previous message 🙂
Ok if we mark history from 50 years onward, could have pinned it
Shouldn't you delete that aritcle then aswell?
That's apparently the distinction between archeology and grave robbing!
Any way current events are not history
it's close but it's general-oriented - and related to ICRC / Laws of War content too
Grave robbing is when you take personal advantage. Archeology is when it serves the purpose of the general public, no?
yes, but I believe it is also illegal to dig right after someone was buried :p
Well it is a major event what in then 50 years will be a historical event so I mean the lines are really strechable
Is there a specific law for that in most countries? I presume with a police warrant you could dig them up even day after burial
What I want to say with it is that there is no channel to discuss it.
I get that one can argue that history is being written
The history process itself also takes time to be completed (heck, we even learn new things about very old conflicts!)
I get that you might feel "suppressed" on the topic, but the separation is made on purpose to avoid any political "discussion", as trust me it is not something you want in here
#offtopic_politics did exist, and was closed for this reason
I don't mean a political discussion rather than a commentary of the war
but still nope, for moderation reasons
somewhere else than Arma Server is better 😉
It was foolish of me to think that people interested in milsims might be interested to talk about real conflicts
Yep ^^
the closest you get is #military_materials
about equipment and potentially strategy - but avoid the red line
hahaha 😜

TIL this happened in the US
"Seeing another chance at publicity, Wardlow and the forces behind the 1982 Conch Republic secession mobilized the island for a full-scale war, sending the schooner Western Union out to attack an incoming Coast Guard cutter with water balloons, conch fritters and stale Cuban bread, to which the Coast Guard responded with their fire hoses (quickly ending the battle), and protested to the Department of Defense for arranging this exercise without consulting the City of Key West. The leaders of the 478th issued an apology the next day, saying they "in no way meant to challenge or impugn the sovereignty of the Conch Republic", and submitted to a surrender ceremony on September 22"

80 years ago group of brave men ensured that one Tyrant got what he deserved https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Reinhard_Heydrich#Operation
On 27 May 1942 in Prague, Reinhard Heydrich – the commander of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), acting governor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and a principal architect of the Holocaust – was attacked and wounded in an assassination attempt by Czechoslovak resistance operatives Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš. Heydrich died of his ...
I'm looking for British History involving the period between the Falklands and the Gulf War (around 1980-1990). I should say right away I'm looking for this information for a Reforger Modpack that contains the British Army during that period. Some questions I have that google hasn't helped me clearly:
• What would a standard Rifleman be equipped with during 1989? I'm talking full kit. Down to the type of bandages they carried.
• Weights for some of these are missing
• Doctrine and Structure of a standard platoon. Doesn't have CM levels of structure so anything more than a standard Company I think is stretching it. This still includes Armor and Supply.
If anyone is really wise on this stuff (maybe you even served in the Gulf War) then I'd love to talk to you and pay you for your time. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to send me links and if you feel uncomfortable cluttering up this channel you can DM me instead.
Today is the invasion of Normandy, 78 years since D-Day. We must salute for those who died during the invasion.
But he was the acting governor of the protectorate of Bohemia
and ? the decision to eliminate him was taken in response for him signing execution of several CSR generals (and countless amount of citizens) including those which surrendered peacefully borders in 38 in accordance to Munich treaty and 39 for rest of CSR by forced entry in breach of the treaty ...
But he protects bohemia.
his job was to work for occupying power, not to protect citizens of the protectorate
Bohemia tho
Can a person not make a joke?
this was a hot take, not a joke.
If you insist on deleting legitimate historical recording of a conflict, then I suppose I will not post it @radiant rapids
Thanks for understanding.
I do not understand why you serve such opposition to it anyway
What about it? This is a channel dedicated to history
I told you
this channel is for history, not current events
I posted a historical recording of a conflict. That's history by definition, I just want to know why you're so insistent on deleting it
now you know
So today in 1940 Germany began using the Enigma machine to encode messages during WWII
Moral of the story?
Invading is bad
Today in 1937, Japanese and Chinese troops clashed in an area of what is now Beijing, which marked the beginning of the second Sino-Japanese War
And further back in 1770, a Russian fleet sunk an Ottoman fleet in the battle of Çesme
Today in 1274, Robert the Bruce was born
Who are the men on the Bříství memorial? What is their story? What did it feel like to be a #Czech soldier from the small village of Bříství to fight in the Austro-Hungarian army during #WW1?
