Today, 1644 years ago, the Battle of Adrianople (now Edirne) took place between the army of the Eastern Roman Empire led by Valens and the Goths led by Fritigern, which was one of the biggest, if not the greatest of the Roman defeats. The losses of the Goth, non-Goth and Alans tribes are unknown (but estimated around 10k+), but up to 20000 Roman veteran legionnaires and auxiliary units of Batavians, Iberians and Thracs (about 70% of the whole army), including Emperor Valens himself and his generals, fell on the Roman side. Historians then and now consider this battle as the climax of the entire Gothic War, which led to the fall of the Western Empire 98 years later.
It is assumed that the battle took place a few hours' march from Adrianople between the rivers Tonzos and Hebros, where Roman troops marched all day over difficult terrain and arrived at the scene at night tired and surprised by the Goths. Some units moved into battle without orders, assuming they could take on the "barbarians", on top of which all the fields in the area were scorched and both factions had to fight in heavy smoke

Sad story. There was a similar problem in Vietnam, where the goal was clear - to defeat the communists and preserve at least the south of the country under the installed government. Maybe the army professionals (or people who are in the army professionally as staff and the like) are largely paper tigers. For you as a member of the combat unit, every mistake can cost you life, but in the less readable positions it doesn't matter anymore how capable you are or how efficient you are. Even if you had 10 promotions.

Can't WIN a war unless you are willing to wage an actual war. Didn't in Vietnam, didn't in Afghanistan. Also made huge mistakes in Afghanistan from the jump sending so few combat soldiers. It's the entire reason the Taliban slipped away into Pakistan.

The system started forming as the Visigoths sacked Rome and pretty much sped up the already eroding governmental system.
In the country side you had fortified compounds of Romans who owned lots of land. Along with typically a small cadre of well trained/paid soldiers who guarded it.
As things sorta fell apart, the local farmers started looking for basically anybody to protect them. The legions were not coming to save them. So they turned to these people for protection, and sorta agreement of "We give you food, you protect us with your guards".

@ionic eagle so the way I see it christianity is a polytheistic religion because of the trinity. I'd say islam is fairly monotheistic, though I think Allah refers to himself in plural form which is debatable, some say it's royal plural. there's a pantheon in mormonism. New-age is pretty syncretic so you have tons of deities. Gnosticism has the christian god the "demiurge" at the bottom of the divine order of beings with many emanations of "true god" above him like sophia, christ, aeons etc.

The religion itself didn't simply spread by eliminating competitors. The Crusades for example, didn't see the entire middle east, or even portions of it get converted to Christianity. It could be considered one the first religions to really organize and whole sale itself. Like compared to some other religions that were more grounded in reality like Greece and Rome. The monotheistic idea of "Wait, doesn't matter if I'm a poor farmer or king? As Long as I praise this dude I get into paradise?" Was very strong compared to other religions.
Add the supporting logistics of the church who learned from Rome itself how to support long term campaigns. You bet it's still crazy how it became a dominate force.
Like the way I see it, it really was just the luck of the dice. Any religion could have done it, it's just who was ambitious enough to convince those in power it needed to be spread to the world.

Strategically (resources / production, esp. fuel) the war was already lost for germany at that point. As far as I'm aware they're liable to civilian courts, not military. Military courts are separate from Civilian and would never deal with civilians (PMC are not military, they are civilian)
I don't know how PMC companies are able to get away with the shit they get away with... maybe because that shit is all outside the country they're based in?

I'm looking for British History involving the period between the Falklands and the Gulf War (around 1980-1990). I should say right away I'm looking for this information for a Reforger Modpack that contains the British Army during that period. Some questions I have that google hasn't helped me clearly:
• What would a standard Rifleman be equipped with during 1989? I'm talking full kit. Down to the type of bandages they carried.
• Weights for some of these are missing
• Doctrine and Structure of a standard platoon. Doesn't have CM levels of structure so anything more than a standard Company I think is stretching it. This still includes Armor and Supply.
If anyone is really wise on this stuff (maybe you even served in the Gulf War) then I'd love to talk to you and pay you for your time. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to send me links and if you feel uncomfortable cluttering up this channel you can DM me instead.
