I don't agree with the direction they took the series but without a doubt I don't think they took very many creative liberties. Most of the content is as real as it can be without getting into infringements like you mention. I just think they never** really invested any time into making a high fidelity experience when it came to the dialogue. However that has just been par for the course since OFP. I don't fault them for it but it's just an interesting oversight that Kerry refers to Adams as Sir instead of the proper courtesy which would be Sergeant.

I wouldn't personally say it is the best way to play Arma 3, it stretches the engine and changes the basic gameplay loop quite a bit but it is quite popular.
I prefer the game as a military simulator as that is what it excels at above all other games.

I don't think its that bad, I just didn't think it was particularly good. I think like most of these new game modes that the Arma community has created some developers will pick it up and make a real game from it and do it much better. PUBG is one of those and DayZ was genre defining as well. It is another one of those types of things that will likely inspire multiple very popular games over the next 5-10 years.
It isn't very Arma like. But Arma and its engine continues to be a good prototype engine for shooter games with other mechanics. If the base game itself was less janky and more performant BI might actually benefit more in the same way Valve did with CS on Half life back in the day, but they seem intent on aiming for 30 fps so other devs will make the big bucks from these mod modes.

And even VBS benefits from the success of Arma (and visa versa).
So saying that Arma doesn't help the gaming industry is incorrect...

as far as air combat simulation goes DCS and BMS are the best on the market, Arma is like in between but it doesn't feel that good to fly around in it. To me it feels like it takes none of the good stuff from sims like DCS and none of the good stuff from arcadey plane games like AC

Arma is very arcadey in terms of flight dynamics for fixed wing. Helicopters with advanced flight model enabled are quite good though.
If you get the AWESOME mod it will add some things like payload drag and weight (for external pylons), a bit more realistic ground effect, and some real wind effects. Otherwise it's pretty meh. The modded aircraft in the game make up for it with the level of detail the authors provide - the F/A-18 by Tetet is particularly good, as well as anything by Firewill.
The US Air Force mod also released a couple months ago with some larger aircraft. I haven't tried it yet, and I've heard mixed reviews of it, but, it's still early days for that release so plenty of time to iron out bugs.
The largest of the maps are typically 20km wide, so you jet across that in seconds. There is one or two poorly detailed 100km wide maps that would be better, but would suck for anyone on the ground.

but still self hosted squad.xml can be used. i'd prefer the arma 3 units way tho since it is way easier for people to use and set up

Hello everyone, I'm here to ask a question which I don't really know if it's allowed to even do, or if just no one ever just thought about asking about it.
Anyway, I'm here to ask if it's possible to know where can I get the audio files which ArmA III uses, just for personal usage.
The only reasons I would use it for are custom audio sounds for my phone, since I just thought some sounds would be pretty nice for notifications and such.
Again, by the nature of this very question I don't really think it's legal, and I will not pursue into searching these from my own due to some fears on corrupting something, or generally because it isn't allowed to do so, hence why I'm here asking about it.
I do hope this doesn't trigger a ban or kick or anything, it's just a genuine question on something I would enjoy to use.

As Arma is having a free week I would like to point something out. This something was pointed out by our new Community Manager, Nillers, I am just paraphrasing here.
The following should occur everyday, but especially so with an influx of new users upon us.
Don't be a jerk, be helpful instead. Be sure to guide them to the correct places/resources (I'd recommend Forum threads/sub-forums as it will give them a chance to read up first). Don't make them feel dumb for their cluelessness or lack of knowledge. We were all clueless once, and some of us still are at times. Not everyone will be Discord savvy either and may not know that #channel is an actual channel that they should be navigating to, please explain this if mentioning channels.
Additionally, lets keep certain types of banter to a minimum lest new users say "but he did it!". All it takes is for one new user to try and one-up you and find himself banned for NSFW content or similar.
If you do not feel like being helpful (for one reason or another), we ask you not to comment.

We have a #hardware_vs_arma channel for hardware questions.
Don't expect 60fps with that cpu i'd say. but should run fine.
no numpad, is.. unfortunate.
But the number keys are mainly just used for looking around. Numpad enter is used to switch to 3rd person (which is disabled on probably most multiplayer servers anyway)
numpad +/- is used for zooming, but besides some tank visors you usually can do that by holding right mouse button.
numpad * switches scope modes (looking through/over) scope, but I thiink shift+right mouse can do that to.
So.. No its not that big of a problem, you can rebind all the hotkeys that are on numpad to other keys anyway
