Hello Enshrouded players!
I am Olivier and I work at Kyberplay, the agency that organized a building contest with El Rubius recently.
We have prepared the following form to gather feedback from the Enshrouded community: https://forms.gle/TdvV3bbu2UDqm6jd7
The goal is to consolidate all the learnings and provide them to Keen Games so they can benefit from them.
Enshrouded Architects of Wonder is a contest that was initially supposed to be run between content creators (Youtubers / Streamers) in order to promote the game. When we discussed the concept with El Rubius, he insisted on making it a public contest open to everyone as he thought it would be better for his community and the Enshrouded community in general.
The contest had more than 470 submissions, 75 of which were considered worthy of Nomination by the judges. The judges were a panel of 3 lifelong gamers, with experience in Enshrouded as well as in running multiple gaming contests in the past. The judges started working on the submissions 2 days before the end of the contest which resulted in a list of potential nominees shortly after the end of the submission period. We then spent the next 4 hours, until almost midnight, reducing the list to 25 Nominees - a heartbreaking task when there are so many amazing builds.
Once we had the final list, we contacted almost all the Nominees within the next 3 hours. Within 24 hours, we had gathered the save files and the signed Nominee Form from all 25 Nominees. We proceeded to test each save game twice, making sure that it worked, did not violate the rules, and matched the submission. We also prepared instructions on where to find each base. We finally decided on Saturday to also gather potential instructions and lore from all nominees in order to be fair, as some Nominees had provided it. These files were made available to Rubius, if he wanted to use them.
We had a preparation talk with El Rubius to explain how our admin would switch between builds using 2 servers so he could go from one build to another with minimal loading time, and where to find instructions on the location of each build. Rubius and his community discovered all the Nominees live, during his stream.
Once the winners were decided by Rubius’s community through vote, we prepared the assets, contracted all the winners and provided context and feedback on the contest chat channel on Discord.
Overall, we noted the following improvements on our end:
- The changes made to X made it difficult for some submissions to be visible. While we believe that it is important for creative contests to be visible on social media, we wouldn’t want to miss any submission. Having a dedicated channel on Discord for participants to share the link to their submission seemed to be a good workaround.
- A file with resources could be created and shared in the announcement with everyone who wants to participate as it helps put everyone on equal footing, especially when the goal is creativity.
- While we wanted this contest to be open to absolutely everyone and any idea, we believe that a contest theme would make the submissions easier to judge and nominate.
This is however from our perspective and we need your perspective in order to ensure that we are covering all feedback and learnings. We will consolidate it and provide it to Keen Games so they can benefit from this one shot third event.
