First make sure they close the game, as backup save files can get overwritten if you keep playing.

Then, have them check to make sure that cloud saves didn't accidentally get turned on (or off, if it was already on before). That is the most likely reason this would happen. You can enable/disable cloud saves by right clicking the game in steam, clicking properties>general>enable cloud saves.

If that doesn't seem to bring their saves back, they might have to dig through their backup save files, which is a lot more complicated. Here's instructions on how the save file system works https://enshrouded.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/17764283835677-Save-Game-Management

Sorry I just noticed this. No, you're fine to join, the only way you'd impact their quest progression is by giving them certain items (there's some quest items in the game), or by completing objectives in their world. But most of the quests are tied to the world, so they won't be triggered just by entering the world with a high level character.

Remove the Flame altar
Stay away for over 30 minutes
I think then they should be gone

Normally NPCs go poof if they touch water.
Without altar there is no fallback for them.
Means... They should be gone with that setup

Tbh both Breath of the Wild and Tears had some flaws.
They're good games but as a fan of the old games... I was let down by the dungeons, itemization (moreso the lack of it and the puzzle elements altogether for the sake of simplicity. I never felt that "I am smart"-moment finding a cheese strat for shrines etc. more like a "oh yeah, that works too I guess.") and especially the lore offended me as a lore nerd

On the topic of loot...
Yea. We definitely need a way to rig it into our favour. Being honest, the long playtime comes already from building and questing in a vast world.
There is no need to further stretch it with rng / bad loot luck

What values for upgrading stuff to legendary via crafting you'd accept?
It's the reason we can't make legendary weapons to begin with because people would just go shopping.

1. Not enough chests to get / pull loot from, especially at max level. There are like... 5 chests? Do I remember that right? Also most of them are silver and in the middle of nowhere.
2. Loot RNG is ranging from everything and not what you actually play. Which could only be combated by having more loot to begin with.
3. Crafting does not work because people can exploit it via ressource worlds anyway.

4. Bosses should always drop legendary gear

they are infinitely more work than "open a chest" and thus should always give a better reward

and they used to not drop resin...
specifically dead conifer trees, they always dropped conifer wood
...now they drop resin OR conifer, cause they recently updated ALL dead trees to drop resin (cause people complain about not having enough resin, although now I am drowning in resin )
and now... the conifer logs, quite often... don't drop conifer anymore! yaaaaaa- wait no that's bad

luckily planted conifer trees do drop conifer usually so... it's still... passable but gosh darn, I wish the loot from trees was just guaranteed at this point

I didn't know that the "red leaf trees" were more likely to drop resin

cause when I chopped some... it just didn't drop resin

cause it's RNG based

so I just assumed resin was random from all trees

now I wish it was a guaranteed, of the 6 drops:
red leaf trees drop 5 drops of resin, 1 drop of logs
green leaf, 1 resin, 5 logs,
conifer? 4 conifer, 1 resin, 1 log, ect

yucca palm? 3 drops of fruit, 3 of palm wood

whatever the drops are, just... set it in stone, my experience isn't going to be made better by the fact sometimes I get more twigs or more resin when I chop a tree...

I have to admit the first play through i did I died 30 or 40 times and just about gave up. I was level 35 then, the max. I didn’t realize I could tone the monster down so I basically did just to get past him. All the other bosses I did ok with but that arena and the boss was just too freaking difficult.

Some things are excluded from being calmed. Such as crabs, tigers and crocodiles. Also scavengers and Dal'Drak, along with all of the boss mobs like Vukah brawlers and all the shroud critters.
