Swords were still good but generally were much more expensive so I can see how a axe would be better due to how cheaper it was and how it could do better against armor due to blunt force and had some sharpness too but swords could find gaps unless it's some full knight armor that covered all gaps
I imagine most people also used a axe before but it's not very much like a battle axe but either way
I now think axes could be a better side weapon but it all depends on which time period we're talking since medieval era lasted for a thousand years
