Hey, I've used Vesktop for a while but had to switch to vanilla because screensharing was a lot worse. It's a new Arch install so I was exploring a bit.
Anyways, I looked it up and it seems like 8 months ago Discord did update screensharing under Linux. Did Vesktop somehow not get the update (old build) or is it much complex case? Screensharing is a lot smoother (even its UI) on vanilla, but everything else is horrible, like 2 title bars (actually 3, with the third being blank on screenshare window...)

Also, I think it's using hardware encoding perfectly as the quality is good (because Discord's SW encoding is garbage and my friends can instantly tell) so there's that. It's broken under Vesktop no matter what I install. KDE Plasma 6.4.4

two options to do this:

  • edit the .desktop file (under (flatpak install directory)/app/dev.vencord.Vesktop/current/active/export/share/applications/dev.vencord.Vesktop.desktop) by adding it as a flag to the Exec parameter (difficult/annoying to do for system installs), this might reset on reinstall/update, ymmv
  • maaaaaybe create a (flatpak install directory)/app/dev.vencord.Vesktop/.config/ folder and stick it in there? Unsure if this would work but there's no reason it shouldn't? You might have to pass extra flags to flatpak to get it to mount the override folder, ymmv, check flatpak docs

I'm experiencing an issue where the AppImage of Vesktop currently tries to open the "Install firefox!" thing in the system installer rather than opening any links, because I'm using the firefox Flatpak and it seems to just be... I mean. hm. I don't understand what it's doing there to prompt that behaviour uhhh, I suspect my XDG config is screwed up somehow, or it's not touching xdg properly (xdg-settings says the system web browser is correctly set to org.mozilla.firefox.desktop so...)

Hi :D Usually I'd report this to Waybar but since this only appears to happen with the Vencord tray icon - and because Ive really been wanting to drop in to thank you guys for great work :)) -- I only see the VC tray icon if once a session I deactivate and reactivate it in Vencord settings manually. This is on Arch+Hyprland+Waybar, Vesktop/Canary from the arch repos.

Also sorry if this isnt the right channel, I skimmed the list and this looked the least wrong. If this isnt a Vencord related issue at all sorry for clogging ya tubez, just wanted to do my communal due diligence

Hey so, quick question, on vesktop a few days ago I started having an issue where after a little while (sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes an hour) when im in a VC I randomly wont be able to hear anyone anymore, but they can still hear me, leaving and rejoining the call immediately fixes this but it's really annoying to have to do, has anyone else come accross this issue and/or found a solution? So, this might not be something that is easily fixed but, Discord rolled out an update to me that removed the inbox on Vesktop, and now I only have this little notification bell that never actually shows me notifications. So, I don't use flatpak, and I have rich presence enabled in the Vesktop options.
However, my question is what else do I need to install?

When I launch Steam games (not flatpak either), they are not being detected.
Here's what I found:

  • wine-discord-ipc-bridge -> this means I have to add /opt/wine-discord-ipc-bridge/winediscordipcbridge-steam.sh %command% to EVERY single game (I have hundreds)
  • arRPC -> no idea how to make it work, I guess some coding required to make it automatically discover games
  • JustTemmie/steam-presence (on GitHub) -> this works from Steam API keys and updates your Discord via API key as well, sorta just ignores arrpc altogether
  • EnderIce2/rpc-bridge -> one more rpc bridge, no idea what it does
  • openglfreak/winestreamproxy -> yet another rpc bridge
  • ... honestly, there's just so many options, I'm confused 🤣

I am using vesktop on a KDE Plasma 6.4 desktop (Gentoo Linux) with my displays set to 150% scaling. When I use vesktop it is very clearly scaling up from a lower resolution rather than rendering at the fractional scaling rate.
Attached is a side-by-side of vesktop (left) and discord running in a borderless firefox window (right), note the much sharper thumbnails and text

So, I'm aware Vesktop works better than patching the native Discord App. However, with my StreamDeck from Elgato, it cannot find the Discord application as it's.. with it's reasons, not called Discord. hey. so i've been trying to get arrpc working on vesktop, but it just doesn't work since i am using the flatpak version. (i specifically want to stay with the flatpak version)
i've read that it can be possible to make it work if you run your own instance of arrpc, which i successfully did. the issue is i do not know how to transform that into vesktop actually receiving the info from the server. i've heard you have to enable the WebRichPresence (arRPC) plugin, which isn't in vesktop, due to the already built-in integration, which i cannot really modify the parameters of.

there's hardly any info out there about this, so i would really appreciate some help, i don't have a lot of experience with doing things like this.

Hi Ari, if you go to Settings > Vencord > Open Settings Folder > Settings.json > search for "arRPC" > set to true > restart vesktop it should work. It will boot up and state "failed to connect to arRPC, is it running?" at the top in green, just open Vesktop without the arRPC service running to check its activated, if the proir warning appears then that means it is. Then run whatever you need to.

Also separate note when you install vesktop it asks if you want this active, but even if you tick the box it doesnt active it?

Also, if it helps: Screenshare is still working just fine on OBS and when I use the website with firefox. Also screenshare works with the official discord client. It also doesn't work in the chromium browser.

Just double checking, is transparency for Vesktop broken on Hyprland? just recently go into the liking of transparent backgrounds (now that im on a tiling window manager), but it seems that it just doesnt work, saw someone else with a very similar setup (Arch, Hyprland, NVIDIA GPU), and the only response was "dont use hyprland"

I'm trying to get RPC working using Flatpak, following https://github.com/flathub/dev.vencord.Vesktop?tab=readme-ov-file#discord-rich-presence
I created the symlink and then added the filesystem args to global Flatpak permissions via Flatseal

My issue, I think, is that Vesktop does not create the discord-ipc-0 file upon startup

Let me know if more info is needed but Vesktop keeps giving stream viewers really bad quality when I screenshare with audio.
The first image is an example stream debug without audio, which is mostly fine quality wise.
The second image is an example stream of what people see with audio turned on.
The third is the debug info from the stream with audio
I have hardware acceleration off and I'm using EndeavourOS using vesktop-git from the AUR, however I have noticed this issue with other vesktop packages (flatpak, vesktop-bin and vesktop)

Hello, been having an issue with audio screen sharing. The person watching the stream reports they can hear themselves talking and sometimes do not hear the content I'm sharing at all.
Some details which might hint to something:

  • I have only tried streaming brave browser.
  • I am using steelseries audio sonar driver, which basically creates virtual cables. Brave browser is set to "media channel" and discord is set to "chat" channel. This doesn't seem like the core issue to me.

I have a problem with screenshare on debian 13 xfce. When I click to screen share, the screen share popup is up, but I can’t input anything to the application. It’s entirely unresponsive, but the background (chats and others) is still running. I have to kill vesktop to work it again.

Since the last kernel update (6.16.5-200.nobara.fc42.x86_64 (64-bit)) under Nobara Linux, I can no longer start a stream with Vesktop.

It opens the window selection, but the window for selecting the resolution and FPS no longer appears.

What could be causing this? Is there a quick fix?

I have updated everything and the latest version.

I'm also having strange problems loading websites when Vesktop is open. For example, a YouTube video won't load and I get a loading error. Only when I close Vesktop and reload the video can it load normally again.

Yes, it's normal for developers to always shift the blame or blame users for errors. But it's clearly related to Vesktop.

From a distance, it's easy to dismiss everything as nonsense and leave users to deal with their problems.

But I have a very clean system and know exactly that it can only be Vesktop.

Or rather, since the last updates to Vesktop and/or my Linux kernel. I wish they would take this seriously.

Otherwise, I have to consider Vesktop a buggy virus that got out of control of its developers.

It's a cool tool, unlike the regular Discord client. But it's also a security risk, which becomes even more apparent when something unforeseeable suddenly goes wrong.

I tried deactivating the plugins, but the problem persists.

And my trust and credibility in you is declining more and more.

It's a shame that users are always portrayed as untrustworthy or at fault. 🥺

Hi, odd issue, possibly bug. Starting vesktop sets the default application for HTML files to vesktop. Which means any time I open them (xdg-open or double click in nautilus), it just opens vesktop and ignores the file. Starting means from a fully quit vesktop, not exited to tray.

Hey, I found the error.
Maybe you're interested.

In my Linux setup, "GPU Acceleration" wasn't allowed.
(For Flatpak programs, you can use the Flatseal program or, better yet, Flatpost to view permissions graphically.)

After starting Vesktop via the console with :~$ flatpak run dev.vencord.Vesktop, I was getting the following errors:
` - Could not create a backing OpenGL context

  • EGL_NOT_INITIALIZED / Initialization of all EGL display types failed
  • Automatic fallback to software WebGL has been deprecated`

That's when I realized it had something to do with WebGL/OpenGL.
After some searching, I figured flatpak run --disable-gpu dev.vencord.Vesktop wasn't a real solution either, so I looked at the Vesktop permissions in Flatpak.

And tada, there it was, and I saw it with my own eyes.

GPU Acceleration was disabled.

So I enabled GPU Acceleration.

And screen sharing via Pipewire under Wayland with KDE Plasma worked perfectly again.

By the way, these two processes are responsible for screen sharing in Pipewire. Just a side note.

But that only slowly got me on the trail of the problem. 😄

I saw a couple of posts and searched in the #1257025907625951423 as well, but I have an issue I reproduced on a virtual machine and on my main system very easily. I only get 720p 30fps when streaming with Vesktop. I have nitro, so I know that isn't the issue at all. I can stream on that vm and on my main machine just fine using base discord and get 1080p 60fps. Is there any ideas on what the issue could be? I reproduced this on the flatpak version of Vesktop and built it from source as well. Any help would be appreciated...

Whenever I download something, I get to choose a location and save, thats normal, and previously, if there was a file that already existed with the same name, I would get a warning. Problem is, this warning is no longer being shown to me, it does with other apps (eg. downloading image from firefox), but vesktop just silently overwrites the file

I've noticed that each time Vesktop (Linux [Mint 22.2 Cinnamon], deb package; not Flatpack) is started, it adds entries to ~/.config/mimeapps.list to associate itself with Discord links.
This includes
x-scheme-handler/discord=vesktop.desktop
Which seems appropriate and desired, but for some reason it also adds
text/html=vesktop.desktop
Which is very much breaking things -- it seems to override other HTML link handling on my system and redirects everything of the sort (such as the F1 help button in Libreoffice) to simply open Vesktop instead.
Is there some way I could stop it from doing this?

Hi, I'm a new Linux user (on CachyOS) And recently got vesktop when I'm streaming a music playlist from any source or videos, the start of the music or of the video starts to get really loud for about 5 seconds for the people who are listening to my stream. It then goes to normal audio. I tried finding something about it in the known issues, but I couldn't find anything. I did find things that sounded like the same issue from 2024 but supposedly that was fixed. Does anyone know the reason why? I had another friend who's also on cachyos ed out and the same thing is happening on his computer, so I know it's not just my computer. We tried disabling the auto gain to see if that was affecting things, and that didn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I was going to open a Github issue about the MIME-association problem, which seems like a more appropriate place for this, but the instructions specifically said to only contact you here and wait for explicit orders to open a ticket.
On a quick glance, I couldn't find any part of the program that is manipulating the settings files directly, so I assume this is happening through src/main/index.tx, which calls
app.setAsDefaultProtocolClient("discord");
On line 34, which appears to be a function built into electron, so the problem may unfortunately exist outside this project.

Until this is sorted out, I suppose I can leave my mimeapps.list read-only, but this is obviously not a permanent solution.
