because Moderators are meant to enforce existing rules, Doomstick, not just give out random instructions. That's how a managed community works. If the mods are free to give whatever instructions they want, there is no system of rules, just a heirarchy of normal members and those "above". I won't comment further however that is the obvious response to your question.

I have no problem with moderation when applied to rules logically. I have moderated big discords before and I know it's required or things unravel fast. I find random shutting down of on-topic conversations a bit weird, banning someone for a comment on heirarchical authoritarianism questionable (and a bit ironic), and mocking someone after they've been banned also very distasteful. but as oomie is gone and the conversation was about his feedback there's nothing left here so i will not fill up your channel further

How do you guys feel about not allowing datamines of the MSQ trial boss to be posted in #archived-lore-spoilers? I'd like to be able to view other datamined stuff like minions and gear, but there's a risk of being spoiled of the bosses and other msq elements which will ruin the surprise 😦

We removed our data mining channel, where a couple of members were exclusively sharing datamined content. The only other change we made was limiting the discussion and sharing of datamined information to #archived-lore-spoilers. That's it.

So I’m making my own Discord server for my FC and am looking at getting Kupo Bot for it. I’m trying to figure out exactly what all it does (i.e., does it gives roles when ppl join or like can I set a welcome page up and they have to type in a command after 5 mins to acquire the member role or something and whatever else it can do id like to know lol) or is it better to go with DynBot for such things as handing out roles, etc

I'm fine with keeping it around in general for overall spoilers including current patch, personally. Gives it a clear purpose and it has more than enough traffic to warrant it.. at least, currently. It'll probably fall off in awhile as the 5.3 chatter dies down, but it's still a solid place to just dump spoilery stuff in general.

I noticed still people posting 5.3 stuff in #archived-lore-spoilers and it's kinda entirely unavoidable, but maybe if they're spaced out a bit, peoples knee-jerk reaction would be the temporary channel instead of looking further down for the regular #archived-lore-spoilers.

I like the patch specific channel. It eliminates any drama (enter that channel at your own risk) as well as making so you dont have to spoil tag everything (which is a pain in the ass), and also makes the other channels more "usable" in the days following a patch

In the future, I agree it's a good idea to have it separated in the channel list away from #archived-lore-spoilers. It makes sense to draw away any potential overlap of spoilers and discussion between the two channels. We're also gonna keep an eye on how active things are in that channel in terms of unique participation, and see if adjusting the time the channel sticks around after a major patch is reasonable. Currently, the channel will be archived on Tuesday, but that could change.

To clarify the purpose of the channel and major patches, it's intended for discussion of spoilers specifically about the most recent major patch when it arrives and for a while afterwards. For example with Patch 5.3, there should ideally be limited discussion about MSQ/side content in #archived-lore-spoilers unless it pertains to older content (Patch 5.2X and older), and this is especially enforced for anyone sharing datamined content. Once enough time has passed (currently one week), allowing the majority of folks to have completed the MSQ and other content from Tuesday (when the patch is live) and over the weekend, the channel will be archived and #archived-lore-spoilers will go back to being the catch-all for spoilerly discussions and stuff.

I'll look at making an edit to the channel topics of #retired-patch-6-3-discussion and #archived-lore-spoilers, and possibly #about-this-server to make the intended usage and distinction between those channels clearer.

The channel was implemented at very short notice, and in the future it'll be around much earlier (It popped up around 1.5 hours before servers opened up early! D:). Even with the short notice, I'm happy with how active the channel has been, and considering the amount of overlap between #retired-patch-6-3-discussion and #archived-lore-spoilers. Thank you very much to the members who helped steer folks to the appropriate channel!
The goal is to have it around shortly before or at the start of maintenance for a major patch, and a day or so before a live letter (this will probably vary depending on the topics covered by the live letter).

I agree but it's really upto you folks to decide whether minor patches should be covered or not. The main focus behind #retired-patch-6-3-discussion being around is to move discussion of new patch spoilers (MSQ, datamining, side content, etc) away from #archived-lore-spoilers so people who don't get a chance to play through the new content as early as other players can, don't have to explicitly avoid that channel (or indeed other channels too) and can continue to safely participate there. Minor patches don't often add anything substantial enough to warrant it, but it enough folks want them to be included in the purpose of that channel, it shall be done!
Same goes for before, during, and after a live letter stream. It moves discussion away from various channels (such as #general-discussion, #archived-lore-spoilers) to one channel for a little while.

Hello! I'm sorry to be a bug :(. I'm setting up a server reorg for our FC and am trying to work in Kupobot wherever I can. We love it to bits so far, so first thanks for all your hard work on it :). I do have a question with reaction roles though--two, actually. Is it possible to have a reaction role have a prerequisite role to be assigned? (This totally isn't a big thing). And, is it possible to set multiple roles to one reaction, so that we could assign all roles listed on a message with one react?

Can you expand on what you mean by perquisite role? As for the second one it is not possible. For an FC have you considered using the automated FC roles?

The best way to do prerequisite roles would be to have your reaction roles message in a channel that you need the prereq role to access. Whether you assign that prereq role manually or have Kupo role reaction messages in multiple channels is up to you @twilit knoll

Ex: Some channels publically accessible, raider channels for FC members that are opt-in, must be FC member to opt-in to raider role. I could very well have missed something with the automated FC roles in the wiki, I'll take another look, though that second message gives a workable solution either way :). Thanks!

We cannot turn up the verification level to what was recommended to us (phone verification), as this prevents new users joining the server from reacting in #612757637813239808, therefore preventing them from accessing the majority of the server. It's also really annoying for genuine users.
We cannot simply hide the user list and prevent the bots seeing who to DM (one way of doing this would be by using duplicate channels, such as a clone of #about-this-server but with different permissions and added role reactions), as it's apparent the accounts sending the RMT DMs are hijacked accounts using self-bots, which can always view the server members via Discord's API. These accounts are not new, and they don't stand out; there's no way to distinguish them from genuine accounts.
Until a better solution comes up, ourselves and other popular Discord servers being hit by these RMT DM bots are in the same situation: I'm afraid there's absolutely nothing we can do right now to prevent these bots joining the server and/or sending DMs to server members. Discord themselves need to step in at this point and take action. They need to provide us with the tools we need to prevent this kind of thing, such as disabling new members without roles from sending DMs to server members.
Please send us a #discord-modmail for any RMT DMs you receive and we'll take action as necessary. You can also report them directly to Discord, which is more appropriate as it technically isn't taking place within the server and the accounts can be suspended rather than just get a ban from us.

It's a possible solution for most Discord servers, but as we're both a Partner server and a L3 boosted server, both of which means we have a very accessible server, by way of a permanent invite URL and visibility on Server Discovery, it's not viable for us.

The Captcha Bot basically allows access to the server, but not any channels or the members list until they verify. It wouldn't stop people being able to join the server, just having access to features on the server until they perform the Captcha

This is what has to be done to prevent bots from seeing the server members.
When a new user joins, they don't have access to any channel that normal members usually have. And then one channel where only new members have joined.
That means, you need a complete seperate category/channel outside of what normal users have access to. If you want to include for example #about-this-server , but not allow the bots to see the members, you would need to create a copy #about-this-server where only the new members can see it.
What i could see is to have a different category just for new members and block the rest of the categories.
As long the bots does not have access to any channels that all the other members are in, then they cant see the members

The mobile validation I've seen deter more legitimate members than actual bots. But it does work for the bots because if they aren't verified then they cannot send DMs to server members.

Whilst there might have been a slither of truth in it at some point when it was fun, it's never been overly true or applicable to every player it's implied to affect.

So I just read up on the replies, didn't get a ping so didn't know I got responded to.
On the RMT bot spam and the lack of a verification option I have a suggestion. I don't know the limitation of Discord bot API, but if a bot can send friend requests / remove friends then this could work. Have the "verification" level of this server set to "phone verification". This will not affect users with a role, meaning those of us already here are unaffected. Upon users joining the server, the bot will send the new users a DM stating the reasoning for the extra security measures, and tells them to accept the friend request from the bot so that they are able to DM the bot while still not having a role here in the server. Some sort of randomized password system (Captcha?) will need to be sent to the bot in order to verify they are human and apply a role to the user. Have a separate entrance channel for un-roled users with similar instructions on how to get verified as well in case for some reason they have DMs turned off.
Another option would be to use have a "proxy" server. New users receive a DM from the bot to join the proxy server where there is an automated human verification process in place. Once done, it'll assign the user a role on this server and then kick them from the proxy server.
I know its a lot of work, but you gotta work with what you have

However, the captcha idea can still work. Assuming users do not have DMs disabled by default, it could send a message with optional captcha to bypass the mobile verification as granting a role will negate the need for the mobile verification should they choose that instead.
The problem then becomes what about the users with DMs disabled, that is a notable amount of people.

You can have a separate entrance channel informing users that they need to have DM's enabled.
If you have "phone verification" enabled then they can not reply to the bot while in this server and not having a role/phone verified then. That's why I first mentioned friend requests because friends are allowed to DM each other regardless of server settings.
You can still have the bot DM a user the proxy server, and have a link to the proxy server in a cloned entrance channel for verification purposes.

The proxy server isn't an ideal solution. I get the purpose but a lot of people will be put off by the notion of having to join another server just to gain access to one.
If the bots are dying down, anything extreme wouldn't be very worth the investment. That of course depends on why the decrease, it could be waiting for the decrease in security measures or just waiting for accounts to mature, or fingers crossed they gave up.

I'm don't know numbers/goal this Discord's trying to reach. I co-founded the main Discord of another, smaller game and as we got larger we had to give up some freedoms and implement checks to deal with certain issues that we faced. Always had to weigh whether or not a check was just too much and would deter people
It really sucks that Discord doesn't have more features in place for security. It was a reason I really liked Mumble with it's ACL permissions that allowed for a lot of freedom, customization, and security all at the same time

The vast majority of our spoiler damage comes from users flipping out over something being posted and being unable to hold their tongues.
In any case, it's been 3 weeks since the release of 5.3. I told people back when E8S released to keep mum on the topic when outside of #endgame-lounge or #archived-lore-spoilers, for 2 weeks, then be light on the topic in other channels afterwords. We're well past that point now.

It's not just about mods being uncomfortable - this is a Partnered Discord server, which is held to a higher standard than a typical server you might frequent. We adhere to strict Community Guidelines as a Public server as well, which only decreases the amount of flexibility we're allowed to give with this sort of thing. The two big showstoppers for Purge are either Kupo doesn't have send_messages, embed_links and manage_messages in the channel you're trying to Purge or you don't have the action logs channel set up (which you can read about here - https://gitlab.com/kupo-bot/KupoBot/-/wikis/Configuring-KupoBot#action-channel)
I'll look to add some error handling for that second case today so it informs the end user if that's the problem.

Probably better to have something in the channel topic of #translations-and-liveletters, since no one reads the pins (that channel's pins serve a specific purpose anyway). But, it has come up many times in the past; it's frequently been mentioned in the liveletter channel (e.g. https://discordapp.com/channels/100463940835762176/151558839005741056/623021186384658442)
The limit is ridiculously low (10 per hour) but that's intentional. It's an 'announcement' channel, for those irregular infrequent announcements/important messages, not 'hundreds of messages per hour' channel.

was told to leave a few thoughts on endgame stuff in this server.
it feels like this discord could potentially be the more "casual" friendly alternative to endgame content as the balance is a more uh harsh enviroment to put it lightly. feels like thats a space in particular thats missing in the xiv community and i think we could do a good job of filling it. it feels like the balance is a bit more for people who already have an idea of what theyre doing. stuff like explaining mechanics which arent easily explained via videos to some people, explaining why 80 rotations are Like That, tips for individual classes in endgame etc.
i would start with reworking endgame discussion pins entirely, theyre outdated and dont help anyone and might as well mostly be purged at this point and replaced with guides/tips for the current raid tier, ex, stuff like castrum/pb potentially dungeon speedruns :^). theres a ton of resources out there which can be easily compiled into one neat package so the more common questions can be 
at the same time the individual longues for the classes are kind of weird? feels like the dps ones dont get traction at all and the other ones get questions that would be better suited in an endgame discussion channel. i would move the endgame discussion channel up and renamed it to endgame-questions instead. role longues feel a bit unnecessary. i wouldnt have them deleted but i feel like a endgame-questions channel would be better suited to answering questions rather than individual lounges (also because its easier to call out someone for giving bad advice which ive seen.. a bunch.)
this wouldnt necessarily be like a big break through but i feel like these suggestions could help a bit to make this server more introduction to endgame content friendly. i wouldnt compete with the balance, but provide an alternative to it thats less intimidating.

This discord is already considered casual to be honest.
I personally havent found the balance to be harsh if you keep yourself to the class channels, as a black mage myself i found the caster channels to be super cozy/fluffy.
Also, the endgame discussion channel is meant to be for both discussion and questions, remaking it into a questions and help clone for endgame content will leave people out of a place to discuss endgame content/raids.
I brought up the lounges to the team and we will discuss them, this doesnt mean that anything will happen regarding them, but we will discuss them.

yeah i was trying to find a way to find more traffic to the channel esp because i think that it could end up having more under the right circumstances and dispelling that aura of "casual discord" a bit when there are a bunch of people who do endgame content and answer questions related to it all the time. even without a questions channel discussion could end up having a lot more traffic if it was just reworked a lil or pushed up to the ffxiv category chats

It was an oversight on the part of all of us that voted that the rule-breaking entry got through at first. The staff keep an eye out and remove entries that break rules throughout the whole process of submissions but no one realised that one had been modded until too late

Everyone was notified at the start of the contest that if there was too many submissions, they would be culled. You'll notice if you read the rules that full body shots were not required for this contest.
My directions to our staff when we did the culling vote were "pick your favorites", same as for the final vote.

But it's also kinda dangerous to leave everything up in the air, see /r/ffxivglamours with no voting criteria that has top all time mostly taken up by boring but heavily reshaded glam shots.

Pretty much i think the contest was half assed, more so than before. Probably because you've ran the contest every month by now. You've missed some rule breaks before even culling.

Not sure this has been suggested or thought of yet, but is it possible to add glamour to trivia? Participants would be shown a certain glamour and they would have to name the specific piece. Of course these pieces would be hand picked by someone Kael knows about lots of glam. But I feel like something like this would open people's eyes to some really underlooked sets out there.

I really wouldn't suggest this one. Glamour is far too specific, and a colossal majority of players probably can't name glamour pieces off the drop of a hat. This is especially notable with variants that have minor differences, such as the Rebel Coat. It's a neat idea, but not exactly ideal imo.

I think it's a neat idea.
Consider that each trivia question has an associated difficulty that changes depending on whether it has been answered correctly or not and that some glamour sets are far more common and known than others. Perhaps if a question with an image had more time to be answered, that would also help.
As for glamour sets that are variants of others, all the names of the variant sets/pieces should be acceptable answers. That would eliminate the issue.

A true glamour savant can tell the difference between the rebel coat and the urban coat. That's not a good example as the differences are quite apparent. I think it becomes a matter of determining what is obvious and what is not. A lot of sets are shared models, those I think would obviously classify as accepting all possible versions. But I would disagree at urban/rebel because they're different.

But that would create the precedent that the only real glamour names worth knowing are the shortest names to type. A difference in a few keystrokes makes a hell of a change when theres 40, 50 people all vying for the first answer. I'll freely admit that can be taken as a bit of a stretch (and not being a glamour person, hell if I've got an answer), but I guarantee that's 100% what will occur.

The difference there is we're talking statlines, something literally everyone that plays the game is exposed to on a regular basis. Not merely the names of an outfit. DH sticks because you're reading it over and over. How often does one randomly mention or come across the manderville top in comparison?
Don't get me wrong, that's potentially a fair argument and is appreciated as a result; but even if you're not a super legend at the game, odds are significantly higher you're going to know stat abbreviations not only through being told, but also just on reading them once you see DH/Det in the conversational context of stats or damage.

Yes, as the bot is unable to assign roles, you can request a role by asking nicely in there.

You can do it in #kupo-bot-spam. People, not one person as many believe, used it to satiate their unhealthy thirst for attention as if it sustained their life force, in the middle of conversation. Adding nothing but an annoyance. Personally I think a per channel cooldown is ideal.

Yeah, I mean it is what it is but they're substituting just fine now without it. The issue with !me is the embed was large and intrusive on mobile when you're in the middle of trying to have a conversation and then after 1 person, everyone, their mother and their cat felt the need to follow. Screenshots aren't as intrusive since they're responsive.
