I got it to cite sources by asking it a series of questions (regarding the health benefits of plant based meat vs animal meat). When the answers started to inclued sources, I asked it to cite the 10 top sources it used. After its usual diclaimers, it listed ten studies attributed to ten journalsb(some duplicated from the same journal). I looked up the journals and the studies were there. HOWEVER, I got this disclaimer from the bot - "the studies I listed in my previous response were not real studies, I made them up as an example and I apologize for any confusion it may have caused" WTF? I get citations whch are MADE UP? This doesn't make sense. "Making things up" requires actual thought, not just regurgitation of facts. I thought I was on to something, now I am just perplexed;

Well, the prior conversation you had serves as input for the bot. So if it told you it can't do something, it will take that response into account with its next answer.

So you may want to avoid continuing using chat windows where such responses came up

You probably have been misinformed about how the bot works. Everything it says is made up. It uses response templates based on the vast database it has and guesses the right word transformation to continue. It does this almost word by word, so it doesn't even know what it is going to write when it starts. But you can ask it again after it is finished and it will likely better be able to evaluate if the response really matches its dataset information. However, even if it does, there is no guarantee for it to be right. After all, all evaluations are only based on rather unprecise text on a lot of different topics.

I have gotten messages that what I am asking is beyond its capabilities, but by rephrasing the question from different angles, I can usually get it to reveal something it has said it is incapable of doing. This thing is in its infancy and we need to learn its quirks to best use it to our maximum advantage ..... before it no longer needs us, and we all know what that means ......

I did discover that the answers are "made up" (which seems to imply a will of some kind), but the journals it cited were real journals, and the data about which it commented was contained in those journals, lining up with the "made up" answer. Isn't every answer WE make "made up" on the spot to fit the criteria of our conversation? I know that sounds like splitting hairs, but what good is AI if it has to "make up" stuff. We used to have a president for that.

No. an AI can't have IP, therefore it can't have IP on the contents of the work you created together. You completely own the work yourself. However in the context of academics your educational body could claim academic dishonesty. Because you didn't really create the work through your own effort.

In any business context it is totally fine.

Also the TOS state that you have to tell if you used chatGPT. So I guess if you were doing it correctly. You could use ChatGPT when you hand in a work at university as long as you say that used it to generate the answer.

I just uploaded an original interview response I did and it thought an AI wrote it the above-highlighted sections. as opposed to a prompt I had chatgpt write based on a question I'm currently writing an essay for. I gave it random criteria for the response and it only thought 3 sentences were written by AI out of 6 paragraphs. I would say it has a long way to go before it can discover a significant amount.

Edit: I personally would never use Chatgpt to do assignments just in case something ever does come out, but I was curious to see the effectiveness of GptZero when I saw the video posted. The critical point here is that if all your homework is checked by a plagiarism checker, then all of it needs to have a consistent writing style, one that matches the style you yourself write with. Otherwise, the plagiarism checker may be able to detect the change of writing style between your submitted homework assignments and perhaps your exams or so and highlight this for your teacher(s). Things can get very bad for you if one of your teachers decides to make sure that you yourself can write in front of them the same way you write your homework.

Thus, it's better to use ChatGPT as as a sort of "tutor" or helper for certain steps of doing your homework, while you write your stuff yourself.

Does anybody have links to quantify the computer power and electrical energy associated with chatgpt returning resources to queries? I read some one from OpenAI say it’s a “ridiculous” amount of compute power per response. Feels like some more nuanced queries take much longer than others to resolve (but could be sever load). To my mind there’s a lot of my everyday search engine enquires where I want a quick answer I can imagine going to for a chatgpt service for instead of duck duck go. If the resources existed such that everybody online did same, I imagine the increase in server loads would be significant. Would love to quantify, even if it’s spitball/back of envelope stuff.

I just opened a chatGPT account and it doesn't seem to work. Whenever I type in a prompt and hit "enter" it simply adds a new line. Even the example prompts just fill in the prompt box and do not work. I tried on firefox and chrome and even on my phone, so I don't think it's a browser issue.

I haven't been able to get ChatGPT to access web links, so for the time being, I doubt you can use LinkedIn links. Copying & pasting the content may give more consistent results.
