Hey everyone! 👋 Exciting news coming your way!

Starting this week, we're rolling out a bot designed specifically to link your OpenAI and Discord accounts together. ✨

As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the security of all members within our server, we are introducing mandatory account verification. This applies to both new arrivals as well as existing users in our community. We will be implementing this process gradually throughout the week until the end of the month so stay tuned for those notifications!

You will receive a notification when the verification bot becomes available to you. This can be found at the top of our channel list. Once your account has been successfully verified, the verification channel will disappear and you'll be able to resume normal use of the server. Members who remain unverified by early August will be removed from the server; however, they may rejoin promptly using our Discord invite link: discord.gg/openai

DALL·E 3 is OpenAI's latest text-to-image model, able to generate images from simple text descriptions, and available via ChatGPT Plus and OpenAI's API. But beyond its use for creating fun and interesting images, what practical applications does DALL·E 3 have?

To explore this question, we caught up with a few members of the community who have been using DALL·E in their workflow & projects. Let's see what they have to say!

➜ EVERCHANGING DESKTOPS 🖥️

One creative use of DALL·E comes from member and curator, @frreiheit, who has been using the model to create ever-changing desktop backgrounds. With the power of DALL·E & some clever automation scripts, @frreiheit has been able to spotlight their favourite DALL·E-generated images on their desktop every 30 minutes.

@frreiheit shared their inspiration for this project, "Because I found it sad to generate wonderful/cool/interesting images and not see them again, I created a daily slideshow in Windows with all my images" - what a great way to showcase the amazing images generated by DALL·E!

For those interested in trying this out for themselves, create an album of your DALL·E images, and set your desktop background to rotate through the album every 30 minutes. This can be done easily on most operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. 💻

➜ POSTER GALORE 🖼️

@movoza has been using DALL·E to create personalized posters for their sports team. By simply providing a short description of the game & team's personality and style, DALL·E generates unique and eye-catching posters that embody their team spirit.

He shares, "I also printed some, like these as a trophy to take home after a tournament. After upscaling they were great!". This demonstrates the potential for DALL·E in creating customized posters and graphics for events, teams, and more.

He also uses DALL·E to create and send personalized reactions to friends and family, adding a fun and creative touch to their communication.

As briefly mentioned in a past Spotlight, member @karasu_toragara has been using DALL·E to recreate childhood memories and sentimental moments. With the help of DALL·E, @karasu_toragara has been able to visualize and honour these special moments in a unique and heartfelt way.

In a recent project, @karasu_toragara shared that they have started the 'Memory Salvage Project', where he recreates special memories that he holds close to his heart, for both himself, and his local community.

He mentions he is currently working on a memory of an old nostalgic radio that he used when he was 8 years old with his father. "Since I cannot share the finished image with my father, I set the scene in America this time to visualize the joy." We are excited to see more of these heart-warming projects from @karasu_toragara and how they use DALL·E to bring these special moments to life.

Last week, we hit quite the milestone: 100K members of our community! We couldn't have done it without all of our amazing community members, so thank you all for being a part of our journey! 🥳

To celebrate, let's take a look back to when we first started. 🚀

➜ OUR BACKGROUND 💭

Our journey began back in early 2022, when the OpenAI Discord server was created as a communication platform for members of the closed-beta for the second version of DALL·E. During this time, only a select few had access to the impressive technology, and the server was a small, tight-knit community. Once the beta period ended, the server was opened to the public, as a place for all AI enthusiasts to come together and discuss the latest developments in the field. 🌍

To first gain access to the server, OpenAI staff had to manually invite each member one by one. Talk about dedication! 💪

➜ OVER THE YEARS 📅

Fun fact: This isn't the first time we've hit 100K members! 🤯

Back in November of 2022, we reached this milestone for the first time, just in time for the release of ChatGPT! Our server grew rapidly as more and more people became interested in the advancements of OpenAI's models; by the start of 2023, we had surpassed one million members, and reached three million last May! 🚀

However, in an effort to ensure the server remained a supportive community for genuine AI enthusiasts, we decided to implement a verification process in the middle of 2023. This resulted in some inactive & non-verified members being removed, bringing our numbers back down to just under 50K. 👀

➜ WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL? ❤️

But numbers aside, what makes this community truly special are its members. With such a diverse group of people from all backgrounds, the discussions and ideas that come from this server are unlike any other. Like @Eskcanta shares, this community "has nooks and crannies where folks 'make it their own'... and it 'feels different'". 🤝 And it's not just about AI—our community also focuses on giving back and making a positive impact.

As @karasu_toragara shares, "Improving alone holds little value to me... Achievements unattainable alone become feasible through our community's growth." And as @mrsyntax sums it up, the engagement from OpenAI staff, members, and community leaders is what makes this community stand out. 👏

Last week, OpenAI unveiled OpenAI o1, promising enhanced reasoning abilities and improved safety measures. The new models, available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and Tier-5 API users, OpenAI o1-preview and OpenAI o1-mini are set to redefine user experiences with features such as real-time streaming of model outputs, knowledge retrieval, and code interpretation capabilities.

By utilizing large-scale reinforcement learning, the o1 models can reason through a chain of thought, which not only enhances their performance in STEM areas. The introduction of these advanced reasoning capabilities has allowed the o1 models to excel past GPT-4o in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) exam. GPT-4o solved 13% of the problems, while the reasoning model scored 83%.

OpenAI remains committed to fostering a safe AI ecosystem, continually refining its safety protocols and collaborating with industry leaders to safeguard user interests. Specifically, OpenAI partnered with the U.S. and U.K. AI Safety Institutes. During jailbreaking tests, GPT-4o scored 22 (on a 0-100 scale) and o1-preview scored an 84.

➜ Dec 5: OpenAI o1 & ChatGPT Pro

OpenAI released the full version of its o1 model to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This model represents a significant advancement in AI reasoning capabilities, employing a "chain of thought" methodology to tackle complex tasks. Along with o1, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Pro. Subscribers to ChatGPT Pro receive unlimited access to OpenAI's most advanced models, including o1, o1-mini, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice features. While these models won't be fully released until 2025, they are in public safety testing today. OpenAI's o3 model surpasses o1 in coding, math, and science benchmarks, expanding the frontier of this developing technology.
