Hi everyone,
I am trying to generate pictures with Dall-e-2 based on a set of my source images. Is that even possible?
What I see is that I may generate images based on the text prompts or ONE source image.

What I'd love to achieve is to upload 10-20 photos add some text prompts and then generate images based on that.

Any comments, reccomendations would be much appreciated.

I have seen multple startups that generates different profile pictures based on the selfies people upload, e.g. I as a user upload 10 of my photos and then they generate 20 fancy profile pictures. For some reason I was sure they all use Dall-E under the hood. Isn't it possible somehow to train it that way?

What was your prompt? Were you using the plugin on GPT-4, or labs.openai.com? If you're using natural language, you'll want to use the plugin, as it's more like an assistant for creating images. If you're using the latter, the need to craft your prompt very specifically, as it will literally output visuals based on the text in the prompt itself.

You could theoretically, but it woul ld very super difficult. You'd have to perfectly erase the background with the eraser in the editor and then describe the new one you want to see. I don't think Dall-E 2 would be the best software to use for this (likely photoshop)

I do not know what happens when you're not using it for 6 months. If you've used DALL·E specifically before the 4th of April you should be seen as an Early Adopter.

Many do not realise you actually need to use DALL·E to be seen as an Early Adopter. You need more than just having an OPENAI account.

But I haven't been idle for 6 months, which might be the culprit. It isn't out of the ordinary to turn off or put accounts on stand by when they are idle for months. Might be something like that happened, messing with the early adopter status of the account.

Unfortunately I'm only guessing. I'm not an employee. You might be able to find it in the FAQ somewhere.

That often means you're using some filtered words (or the request is somehow complex to generate). When I used penetrating stare for example I didn't get much in return. If it is often used in risky subjects there is more chance you'll get less. Same for for example kids.

Oops my bad. Your question is a strange one. DALL·E is based on describing a picture. You can do this in any form you want. Requesting "generate a picture of a man in a tree", or just starting "a man in a tree" are equally valid. Especially with the experimental versions you can keep adding descriptions to add to or transform the picture. A man can be in a tree with a certain style watching a bird, or knitting socks.

All you need to do is describe. Broken English is easily acceptable as well.

I'm a fan of checklists, it's easier to make sure that "this is mentioned" and "that is described", etc

As art is subjective, you'll need to find that yourself. I often have simple prompts, but one person has created a list of artists and styles he'll add a few for a certain stylistic output. In the end you'll need to watch what is put here with prompts (sometimes in picture name, like I often have) and experiment yourself. Here's 5 I made for the bubble tea daily theme.

One more thing. It is still a work in progress. DALL·E proper has been stable for a while, but experimental versions like the Bing image creator can change. Sometimes it is hardly noticeable, other times you find some things have become impossible. Ink wash is a style I like, but it has been impossible to do right at times due to model changes.

That really depends on what you want. Best is to do it case by case. Ask in the #❌┃prompt-help channel and watch a lot on what other people are creating and the prompts they use.

Best to keep in mind it's only a well trained program and not a human that will make your picture. It has training data based on sentences and words, which it'll apply to your picture. If you want a specific character from an obscure game it'll likely not work. If you want Darth Vader, you'll get accurate results.

Furthermore you need to consider complexity and try to make it as simple as possible. The more complex the prompt, the more chance the AI will not deliver what you want. For example, if you want a western dragon, you do not have to describe it in detail. You can say a dragon with wings or a western dragon. These are plenty in the data, saving many words on describing tails, wings and fire-breathing.

You get better results if you ask for a masterpiece, or studio quality photo, and so on. I am sure there are specific prompt elements that would generally be useful, as you suggest, but I am yet to get to the bottom of this. If you are using the web interface, make heavy use of the negative prompts feature (listing things you want it to avoid). Giving it a prototype from google images etc is also useful to save time if you have an idea of the overall composition.

I'm sure you can feed images to runway's gen-2 as base images, but to create frame-by-frame animations from within dall-e, seeds are a must. Right now consumers don't have any control over seed locking or any other generative parameters for that matter, except for what you describe in the prompt itself.

So, really hardline specific prompting will be essential to create similar looking images, and that's not even frame by frame. Just A to B images which then have to interpolated.

Bing offers the DALL·E experimental version for free via https://www.bing.com/images/create. They do harvest your information and offer the service so you start using their other services.

To use outpainting/inpainting you can use the /daily command and fill in your OpenAI email. You'll get 4 credits that expire in 24h. You can use this for inpainting/outpainting. The exchange here is incentive to use it more and for trsting purposes to improve tgeir service.

There isn't, sadly. It's a trial and error thing. If you feel certain words might tip off the censor, there's a good chance they will. It's uncomfortable, many have griped about seemingly innocous words getting them into needless trouble.

I feel it isn't lagging behind. It is using a different more robust method and already on par most of the time.

In my experience, SD method gives you heavily stylised pictures with little flexibility. SD picks up on a few keywords and makes something of it, which is often pretty similar.
DALL·E (experimental) is much more flexible. I can add more objects and add strange things. DALL·E tries to truly emulate what you ask for,including weirdness or in some cases even text. If the experimental version is released to the public it will absolutely be a leg up on the competition. You can have a taste of experimental at the bing image creator.

This seems more a prompting issue. Any SD technique goes out of it's way to make it stylised. If you give DALL·E any style it can generate it. With the Cerberus it causes some problems, but overall it works. Here's an ink wash version of your request:

You can still 'generate variations' on an image that DALLE creates for you. But it seems you can no longer do this with your own uploaded image - as is shown in some out of date YouTube videos.

So far, I have wasted dozens of credits and DALL-E really just seems to ignore my uploaded image altogether.

There's two ways you can mix. One is adding a perspective or visual. Think of "See top and bottom", or "far away view" and the like. The other is adding more to the picture that can force the perspective. As an exple, I wanted a small table with something on it, but also see the legs and ground. It zoomed in on the table with the item. I forced the right perspective by adding something near the legs. "A bottle on the ground" or "a bottle against the legs" forces the AI to think about this item on the ground, adding a certain perspective.

It gets some correct, others not. There isn't a great way to copy a likeness for some and that's just how it is. DE. I've found if I want a certain look, it won't copy a celebrity but can be similar if you ask chatgpt to describe the celebrity as if to a sketch artist. Then pass that to Dall-E. Hit or miss depending on who, and really not the main use case for this AI art.

Can someone give me some tips on extending (outpainting) with DALL-E? I have a square image from DALL-E - but I need a rectangular/portrait image. Whatever prompt I use ('extend image' or description of what should go in the extended frame etc) - I just get junk back - i.e. random images floating around (that have nothing to do with the main image). Does anyone know how to simply extend the image so that it just flows from the image inputted?

@quartz vale The link comes up with a padlock and 'No Access' 😫 However to answer my own question - I just could not get DALL-E to play ball on this - the best solution I found was to use outpainting in Affinity Paint. It works pretty well, not perfect, but with a little old style touching up....

Let's hope that DALL-E evolves to allow for different ratios. Not everyone wants a square.

i think they are already testing that with some users with an 'experimental' model in the dall-e 2 website. Also, the DALL-E 2 plugin on ChatGPT generates images in landscape, portrait and square ratios ('wide', 'tall' and 'square')

Not since the 6th of April I'm afraid. You can check this in the faq. Any good search engine will give it as the first result if you prompt "DALL·E credits".

You can use the /daily command for 4 free credits a day though (last 24h), and you can use the Bing image creator for free, which uses the generally more liked experimental version.

Such sweeping statements are best supported by facts. DALL·E experimental is working fine for me. It requires better prompting to get good results, but this is because it follows your directions much better. You can add more objects, have a wider range of styles and it isn't automatically stylised to the maximum. If you're good at prompts, DALL·E will carry you further.

Though I'm curious in what way you imagine this, in generally I would say no. DALL·E is a generative application, not a transformative application. It also does not upscale for example. You could conceivably improve with inpainting and outpainting by extending the picture, and erasing and regenerating parts of the picture. But in general it isn't a tool for 'improving' picture quality. I recommend searching other apps that fill those needs.

I have uploaded it as an example, and tried all kinds of prompts, both simple and detailed, and it seems to fail every time. It doesnt seem to understand the principle of 7 circles inside each larger circle, recursively. This was the last prompt I tried:

Out of experience I can say that it's very hard to reproduce real life images, be they geometric, people or whatever. Even generating the same character or object is incredibly difficult, unless you can 'lock down' many things in the prompt.

From my experience, your shapes are particularly difficult. We have similar shapes in similar shapes in similar shapes. Describing one circle can affect the others, as the language model behind it simply isn't perfect. The more object, and the more similar, will start blending the given properties. Unless you can find some words that can capture the repetitiveness of your shape it'll be impossible for the current model I fear.

However, any country can have their own laws and regulations. So it is best to say that openAI will not make any claim, and further information is best gotten from the country you plan to use the pictures. It can be experience. That being said, I actually like a few of the pictures you showed more than my own. Don't discount yourself!

I've seen many elaborate prompts from fellow creators, as well as use chatgpt from time to time to make prompts. I 'specialised' in short prompts before, but with elaborate, purposeful sentences in the prompt you can do truly amazing things. The blacksmith one was assisted by chatgpt, the last one my own.

It isn't so much dyslexia as not trained well on text. It is an image generator, using the same creativity on text as it would on an image. There is no distinction for the model, so it looks gibberish. You can see this best with things that are always the same with text. A stop sign is a particular shape with always the word stop, so it is integral to the picture. However, try to change the text of the stop sign results in gibberish.

A few pictures a short while ago that were posted here had leagues better text, so it is possible that this is learned. However, everything here is still a work in progress. When (or if) it will arrive nobody knows.

Asking too much or complex can make things not being added. Priority is thus important, as well as complexity. Do not describe a dragon with wings and 4 legs, but a western dragon. The earlier in a prompt the higher the priority. I feel it also has multiple areas it does this priority separately, so a request for a picture style will have it's 'own' priority compared to what is in the picture. That us why describing a style at the end of a prompt or at the start hardly seems to matter, while addingcan extra item to the picture where you already have a lot can make it not show up or distort the picture.

I think it's instability. It is often not showing results for me, but once every so often it does. I expect the team to know if it and work on it. Might be as simple that the rolling limit just started, limiting our inputs.

That being said, my first errors were because of a different plugin that I wasn't autorised for any more. Make sure all plugins you have are working, or single out the DALL·E plugin.

First of all it's the first time Ive seen AI do such clear text. it nailed almost all requested text in great fonts!

I also compared it to my friend (who is promidjourney )and dalle ate it big.
I also asked chatgpt to change the ratio and it seems like the api request looks different now and more clear, which is pretty cool.

On top of that the new realism features are great, this is just a massive upgrade from anything weve had!😍

Changing the weather might be possible using transparency and the upload+ edit function. It will recreate transparent areas of an image based on the prompt. So if you take a photo of a sunny landscape, remove the sky with the eraser or an external tool, and prompt it with "stormy day" you can change the weather. Broad style transfer isn't possible with this model though.

This OpenAI Discord went from over 2,000,000 members to about 51,000 now. Went from around 200,000 logged in at any given time to 16,000 now. 98% and 94% respectively. That was quite the thinning of the herd alright! Rather impressive actually! This was the 2nd biggest Discord. Now it's insignificant.

The 'trial' is only if you've used it before the 6th of April. You can still do a sort of trial by using the /daily command every day for 4 credits (lasting 24h). You can also use the Bing image creator for free.
