claude 2 has a context length of 100k, though both antropic and openai have pointed out that it doesn't have perfect recall within that context window, which is where claude 3 is a significant improvement with a context length of 200k tokens
also ChatGPT has a context length of 32k for plus and teams and 128k for enterprise

personally I think the "killer app" that claude 3 currently lacks is a native equivalent to advanced data analysis

Actually, I've been involved since mid-December 2022. The allowed content policy used to be way more strict than it currently is, though the model's slowly adjusting to the somewhat increased freedom of personal use (not API, not shared custom GPT).

I have challenged 3.5 and 4 with the same coding tasks and the answers are quite a bit different. and its great to be able to upload code files in 4. It's amazing

Understood, and I think it's awesome that you tried with both models.

I don't know how long the messages you're sending back and forth are, but the 40 messages/3 hr works out to 4.5 minutes between your input, to never have to wait.

As in, if you send your first message of the day at 5 AM, you get it back at 8 AM, and still have those 39 others use any time; second sent at 5:02 means that one's back at 8:02. Of course, regenning messages counts as a message sent too.

So you can potentially plan your work around when you send messages, be it with built in pauses, say for some email time or a lunchbreak. I often send an input then check Discord or do something else for a minute or two, come back and read, prep my next input - and ration my messages so I use close to my full allotment and am not waiting when I don't intend to be. If I know I am about to go cook dinner, maybe send some more faster for a bit.

But I built 'the delay' into how I think about using the model, and use 3.5 for what I can - sometimes prepping something with 3.5, then taking the prepped form to 4 for finishing, sometimes saving a few messages with 4 by that

Ooh. Be ready to regen a poor response, if you notice one. You can also edit your input right before the lower quality output, to redirect/get another chance at a good output.

The model definitely can go down an undesired path, or I can be surprised by how it inteprets an input, and getting it back where I want it, when it's already there - sometimes that's easier to edit my input or even regen its last reply, instead of try to fix 'after the fact'.

I wonder if it would be useful for you to have a few messages with 3.5, getting whatever 3.5 can do - then copy/pasting that to 4, with instructions to clean it up, or whatever. That might help consolidate more into your message to 4 (no idea if that would even help you) and allow you to maybe get more focused, quality output from 4.

You'd be inputing more total, more time spent typing, but maybe get more made for you in total too, and hopefully less wait time for 4 to be available again

I use Unity some... but 99% Unreal Engine now. If your computer can handle Unreal Engine, I HIGHLY suggest moving to it. The blueprint system helps you deeply until you learn code. You can create a game in about 3 hours using blueprints and some tutorials.

but my first exploration and sims were Python, and it's incredible to see code that I was involved with work. GPT does all the lifting, but I wiggle variables and make the plan, and it's great to see the colors flow in the sims.

Just stick to the facts. Model is from January 2024. It doesn't "decide" which version to use. And like any other LLM, it is indeterministic - meaning the response you get can be different with each time you try or click on regenerate.

It actually felt lucid, and was competent at even slightly nuanced conversations.

That's a generic error message, and can have a lot of causes, so figuring out a fix can be a hunt. Here's the general list of steps I've seen people with the problem report worked for them:

Usually caused by a VPN program. May have to actually turn the program off, not just stop the VPN, to see improvement.

Can also be caused by browser extensions, network settings.

Can see if different devices, different networks can connect.

How about your phone, with either web or the app?

One person reported just restarting their computer was the fix they needed (after we tried a bunch of ideas that helped others, but didn't help them).

Another person stated that uploading an image at the start of the conversation helped them.

A great many people find that a fresh install of Firefox fixes their issue, if they were not running a VPN program.

The model can only handle a certain amount of length, but if you can set up the concepts and design it in chunks, the model absolutely can and will plug in chunks for you.

It can write short scripts from scratch, but you're going to have to help and guide a lot with longer ones.

I'm a novice programmer, but it's helped me write Python code that was about 400 lines and simulated lifecycles and reproduction of a plant simulation, including handling gender, timing of seeds sprouting, color changes throughout the lifespan and decay, generation tracking, tracking distance to see if males are close enough to a female flower for it to reproduce before it fades, seed scattering, pausing, getting information on what's happening in each grid square.

I don't know anything, I just knew what I wanted to see, and it made it all.

It can't handle all 400 lines of code at once, but it can handle each function, or the parts of the longest function, and guide me into weaving it together.

Instead of telling it what not to do, tell it what to do, perhaps in some detail.

Kinda like keeping a dog off the couch; shouting "No" or "Don't jump on the couch" tends to not actually stop the dog, because it's thinking couch and keeps thinking it -

Instead, call the dog, 'sit, stay' - throw a ball for it to chase, give it a treat -

All those things tell the dog what to do, and give it something to think about that isn't jumping on the couch.

When really needed, can give as a negative example what not to do, but always give it as a wrong example, and pair it with 1+ right examples, with the goal of contrasting them, so it can see what not to do, and instead do what is wanted -

"Keep the answer short without much explanation." This forces a guess and doesn't actually tell it what to do instead.

I recommend, try to think of how to describe what you actually want the model do that, and replace this with a description of the desired outputs and responses.

And I'd reword the last line to this: "Use my exact variable, class, and method names".

When it cannot do that (because they don't exist) it'll still make up its own. But if it can use yours, that should help.

But there's zero benefit in distracting the model with 'if' there's depreciated flags in your code, even mentioning it is going to make the model wonder if it is supposed to be looking for that - since you want 'nothing changed' if that is noticed, then not mentioning it is the correct path, while also telling it what to do.

I very often then just tell the AI exactly that, and it's done.

Now, code and me learning, and some things the model's not adept at... so if I or the model have a problem area... it's not that simple.

If I need a correction or change, I usually clarify what was done right - that's to protect it, so a confused AI doesn't guess that the good stuff is also wrong -

And then give some clear instruction, if at all possible, about what I want done next.

If the model messed up, I rarely mention it, I just give the correct instruction. I may use the problem output as a negative example, but if I do, I often rewrite it so that it's an ideal output, and tell the model that.

ADA failures are usually very predictable. They limited it on purpose, otherwise people would be making huge datasets with it and OpenAI would go bankrupt from operating costs. So there is a timeout, meaning you can only use it for simple short scripts which is what it was intended for. It needs to be able to write, execute and get the results from Python in a short timeframe.

instead of prompting it to rewrite the text, why not ask it to generate a 300-word essay based on the information given, and then give specific parameters to get the writing style how you want it?

usually it manages to fit a certain word count if you ask it to generate text rather than rewrite it

Another request you can make that may work well if you want to keep the original paragraph pretty close, you can ask it to fix writing errors in it.

You can also tell it directly this:

"Rewrite this text with different vocabulary, in a different order, etc, while generally maintaining the word count of the original paragraph."

Be sure to tell it what the etc is, or remove that, because the model isn't great at guessing or mindreading.

But telling it exactly what you want is usually an execellent way to get it to do exactly what you want.

ive already been using the method provided by you (rewriting it using a different, professional vocabulary, changing the order of the text, maintaining word count, changing word count, adding filler text in between, etc.), and also just tried the method provided by roshah09, and i get relatively the same output, its never 300 words, its almost always 200 words or lower, ive tried telling it to not shorten the text in multiple ways, and giving a specific word count, or even character count and just doesnt work :/

Nah, model can't count, is part of the problem.

I'd suggest mentioning keep it the same length as the sample, it can do better with comparison than counting.

I guess my point is that their testing obviously isn't perfect because we've had major issues before and the status page reads "All good"

Earlier I had it freeze and manually stopped and restarted GPT4 to get it to become responsive. It's kinda hit and miss. It will go 2 or 3 messages then stop responding as normal. So the issue is intermittent.

I know it's 6am because I live not far from OpenAI's HQ. I just assume they have round the clock staff monitoring the issues. Having one that is pingable by people like @maiden fractal to check in to issues would be helpful.
