Sleeping pills, weed or cheap vodka are a great way to get sleepy, otherwise journals and playing cards can be used to "pass time".

I agree that simply waiting around shouldn't require an expendable item but it is what it is, you can use the console to give yourself some of said items

You don't really need to skip time all that much though, if you want to refresh traders, you can change the timer from the mod settings to they refresh quicker
