For 2 reasons. 1 it split the community which for now 75% of the games life enjoyed it without shields and balanced it without shields and 2 the implementation is spotty

I guess thats 3 reasons

I could live without them. If they added them way sooner it would have been generally better for the health of the game but they took too long and people left over shields being added

The lack of balance around them was the main issue though. We had given so many moves tons of whiff time and shields just made those moves worse than they needed to be

Like bro even these last few final months of multiversus could have genuinely saved it if they just made it so much easier to unlock your characters, y'know, to actually keep the new players engaged when they get excited by new announcements.

Everytime there was a small quality update in this game, there were still dozens of YouTubers would make announcements that multiversus was "good again" and "improving!" with genuine positivity that the audience was influenced by

Even just the game giving like 5 characters for free then letting you choose the next character with a less grindy system would have been the hugest announcement that all the video game news youtubers would have been talking about for months

Or like, why not make Rifts be the way you unlock characters, like at the very end of a Rift you just straight up get the character, instead of only getting like the worst currencies as rewards (seriously who cares about the perks that are only usable in single player Rifts)

Rifts was honestly the worst gameplay aspect since it required you to play the SAME LEVELS OVER AND OVER WHILE HAVING TO MAKE ARBITRARY CHANGES TO YOUR LOADOUT LIKE 4 TIMES EACH LEVEL FOR ABOUT 20 LEVELS JUST TO EARN ENOUGH STARS THAT DON'T GIVE ENOUGH PLAYER REWARD SATISFACTION, AND THEN YOU HAD TO DO ALL THAT ALL OVER AGAIN 4 MORE TIMES JUST TO . .. what exactly? Distract the player from the PvP gameplay that is the real draw of this game?

There could be a chance to get Glenium, but you can get other stuff like Battlepass xp, Fighter xp, Pretiges, fighters, or any old cosmetics from previous seasons 1-4 (Profile banner, profile Icon, Ringout, Badges, Announcer voicepack, emotes, and maybe skins too)

For character xp, efficient way is to get the fighters to lvl 5 and 10 respectively, to get 500 xp and 1000 xp

Which isn't enough for 15K for a singular fighter in the fighter road

Tho fighters have the "Fighters mission" in the mission tab, where there's 5 missions for a character and you do their objective for 300 fighter xp each

Its a question of vision though, gold was a better system than fighter currency but having to spend the currency to buy fighters on perks also feels bad so I get why they split it. They definitely messed up the ratio of how each of those should be delivered to the player though

We used to not get the gleamium back from passes either, and not get xp per game. I didnt get the last 3 levels of the pass that one time they added gold borders to some of the frames. wasnt interested and they made that grind massive

I preach that a lot. New player gets the game and just has shaggy permanently unlocked then they have to grind events to get some currency that might not even be enough tog et who they want, then they have to wait for the next event. Couldnt make a worse system really

Perk currency shouldn't have been a thing. Players should just have been given perks. I would have even taken the leveling for perks system beta had. levels for loadouts was also ridiculous when swapping/picking perks in the pre game lobby was perfect

They had options. My personal favorite was make all the previous seasons characters free and make the 2 coming out in the current season unlockable in some way through gameplay. Then when next season rolls over anyone that doesnt unlock them gets them as they get added to the free roster

Instead on release I had to win 10 games with a character from steven universe to earn xp or character currency to progress

The beta players that already had every character unlocked were benefited but the new players would probably spend that in characters

Beta players didnt struggle for characters or perk currency but new players struggled with both. So they created this weird disconnect where they had to give out perk currency and people hated it because they already had enough but others desperately needed more

Also another massive issue. The game got balanced on dodges and whiff frames. Adding a shield and just giving it whiff frames on block broke the balance of the game

The top/good players in this game are such a small minority, most ppl just do not know how to play or straight up are sore losers bc they suck.

Still see ppl who don't know or just don't attempt to fast fall after an attack in the air, ppl who can't parry, ppl who don't wavedash, still see people barely using shield (till this day), still see ppl who don't IAD ever

This game has had a "falling upward" issue since the beginning of season 3 when they made climbing ranked a lot easier. Playtime started to trump actual skill because it was easier to gain rank and harder to lose it. Now though with the imminent shutdown a lot of the actual talent left the game. Mainly because they have the ability to go be good somewhere else in a game that won't die and maybe turn that into something.
