Anyways, point is. A lot of people have that one game that they know is inexcusably bad but they play it anyways because they genuinely addicted to finding that one fun match. DBD is that game for me. And in the thousands of hours I’ve put into that game I feel safe in estimating that less than 10% of the playerbase are interested in doing anything other than hard meta and of those less than 10%, half of them are new players who don’t even know what the meta is.

yeah I feel you, most of the top tier killers I see are like that for sure and playing against meta survivor squads is just plain boring but I still find enjoyment with the game especially when I do run into the rare Wraith or Trapper, even some of the dlc like Demogorgon can be fun imo

I think it’s just a matter of how DBD is made as a game, really. The wildly asymmetrical nature just breeds entitled players who are entirely focused on an us-vs-them mentality. There are veritable oceans of survivor mains out to ruin killer players’ days out of pure spite and vice versa. The number of players I’ve come across who outright pride themselves on making matches as abjectly miserable as possible for the other side is one of the many reasons I almost never interact with the DBD community, ever.

I do have to admit, my viewpoint is likely skewed by the fact that ever since the start of 2019 I have continuously fallen in love with killers that people just HATE. And no doubt that’s spurred my matches in a more sweaty and spiteful direction over the years. But even when I play “nice” or with “fun” killers running “fun” builds the sweat squads are still extremely common.

Same goes for survivor. My username is no coincidence; No Mither is my favorite perk in the entire game but I can’t run it anymore because every quad stall zoning killer Andy is so desperate to tunnel out the weak link that they see the broken sign and audibly shout “AWOOOOGA”

When Legion first dropped I was all over the edgy teen who Dying Light parkours over stuff. But we all know how disastrous release Legion was.

When Pyramid Head dropped I was stoked to play as the very face of Silent Hill and snipe people through walls at that. But Pyramid Head is the zoniest zoner to ever zone so I got reamed constantly for a playstyle I didn’t even use.

When Twins dropped I was in LOVE with the idea of two separate killers in the same trial with vastly different movesets, learning the mechanical ins and outs of Victor’s pounce—it was awesome. But of course Twins is, well, Twins, so I got CRUCIFIED for that.

Fell in love with Knight for similar reasons as Twins, loved fighting everyone at once with my guard squad and being able to play defensively with area lockdown.

Imagine if Malenia got added to DBD and whenever you played her people whined and moaned and reported you and went full sweat because “You’re a Malenia player, you’re a sweaty tryhard”

I have completely different issues with each Maliketh phase. Second phase I have no problem punishing him, that’s the first phase. My issue with the second phase is that between all the red stuff covering the screen and Maliketh’s crippling addiction to Titanfall 2 movement I can barely SEE the guy let alone read his telegraphs.

Oh, and the DoT. The DoT is absolutely infuriating. I would much rather he actually two-shot me outright instead of almost two-shotting me only for me to burn to death immediately after anyways. It is INSULTING.

Trying to learn to read his second phase has been an exercise in frustration and dying immediately to one combo makes me feel as if my best option is to go and level Vigor but I know if I do that then I’ll be coming back to the fight overlevelled and then that’ll feel like I cheated and didn’t get the full experience.

So instead of trying to work through the moral dilemma of “should I level my health up in a video game” I just started a new run.

No intention of powerstancing, either. ER is one of the few RPGs where I feel like I’m really allowed to be form over function and I despise that powerstances have like one dedicated attack where the offhand weapon is even used. If I wanna dual wield, I’m going paired weapons.

Also I have no controller and powerstancing/guarding keybinds are the literal worst thing ever created on KBM even after rebinding everything.

ah, playing souls games that aren’t Sekiro with keyboard can be rough, I’d still give power standing a try if I were you since aside from a few lesser used mechanics you still maintain all the benefits of what you would have with just one anyways, you can still normal r1 and heavy attack just fine and can two hand either weapon as well so you aren’t really penalized aside from weight and if you wanted to use a shield instead I suppose, obviously if the controls are really that awful I get it but most players really fall in love with dual wielding after giving it a chance so you might find you like it more than you might think if you give it a shot

Even paired weapons bother me sometimes. I thought I was gonna love Starscourge but it felt so SO wrong when the colossal sword charge attack that makes my brain do the happy chemicals did LESS damage per swing than a standard light attack because the charge only uses one sword even when paired.

I probably could’ve beaten Maliketh if I’d stuck to Scarscourge because the paired light attack’s damage per swing is just so comedically absurd even by colossal standards but it just felt wrong.

I’ve personally never used them myself bc I’ve seen so many others use them to broken effect but I’ve heard spamming jump dual attacks with claw talisman to be the best strategy, can even just straight up face tank and trade hits with malenia with it bc of the absurd poise damage it does

using Raptor of the Mists with that and two heavy greatswords would probably be pretty funny too since they’re normally so slow

I probably misworded it before but I need to reiterate that I am very form over function when it comes to my builds—hell, I think it wasn’t until I was like RL 110-120 that I finally swapped off of Grafted Blade Greatsword despite a bunch of people telling me it was a garbage colossal because it just looked cooler than all the other colossals.

And the single biggest reason I don’t like powerstancing is that it simply just does not look cool.

oh yeah earlier you said function over form so I was a little confused based on what you were saying, but fortunately ER let’s pretty much any build work with enough practice and patience, even Grafted can be solid if you use it right, it’s stats are low sure but the AoW is pretty great especially on lower leveled/jack of all trades quality builds

and fair enough on the power stancing with big weapons it can look a little goofy sometimes I’ll admit, stuff like katanas and other fast hitting weapons look pretty great with it though which is probably why that style is so popular with most players

I’ve never liked the visuals of dual-wielding anything larger than a dagger. If I see some dillweed running around with two battleaxes I just sit there wishing he’d just two-hand one battleaxe instead.

Ironically the AoW lost the function over form battle when I started finding other weapons and builds. Like, which of these weapons skills sounds the coolest:

-Psychically project your sword forwards to let it viciously drill into enemies
-Use the power of gravity itself to pull stones up from under your enemy’s feet
-Summon a squad of magical swords to stab the hell out of whoever gets near you
-Equip Moonveil and literally become Vergil from DMC
-Stat buff

sucks that sometimes the cooler looking ones are worse, Eochad’s dancing blade for Marais is so sick but the sword is just awful, even worse than grafted imo, the only use it has now is a glitch to multi hit actually good ashes of war and even that’s pretty niche with its range

honestly if you want one that looks incredible, has a high skill ceiling, and can be pretty strong once you figure it out, the Godslayer’s Greatsword from the bottom of the Divine Tower of Caelid is genuinely one of the coolest colossals imo and has a pretty lengthy process to unlocking it too

Context: I think katanas are extremely boring. They’re a bland, basic weeb sword that everyone simps over and outside of funi Vergil build I despise katanas in Elden Ring. Going from colossal to a katana build made the game staggeringly easier. I hate katana builds. They are boring as hell.

Problem: Malenia uses a katana. Malenia is also my favorite character.

I think Godslayer Greatsword is the goofiest looking colossal in the entire game. And that’s including the giant pizza cutter and the weapon that is literally just a massive stick. Godslayer looks like a wine bottle opener designed to look like a sword that they resized to be as big as an actual sword.

The most satisfying move to hit for me isn’t an AoW, it’s a colossal sword charged heavy. It’s the reason I’m doing my first playthrough with a colossal build in the first place.

Especially against late game bosses, finding an avenue to even hit an attack with that windup, let alone without trading damage, is not something my ape brain can figure out easily. But seeing that massive chunk of health just disappear is just… MMMM. And those moments where that instant 44 stance damage sends them on their ass? GOD it makes the difficulty curve worth it, no questions asked.
