They change direction yes. They aren't all in Grassy Plateaus though.

For instance here are the spawn locations for the adults.

Creatures have a component called SwimRandom, behaviors are controlled by a priority system. Each time this action has the priority they'll pick a random direction.

You can see the current action being prioritized on creatures with the command dbc <radius>.

Dbc stands for debug creature.

I originally made a storage room below the lifepod bc piles of boxes was getting old, then it WOULD NOT let me place a moonpool anywhere connected bc the shallows is not flat, so I moved to that awesome spot (between 2 wrecks, next to the hole to my fave biome, beside my second fave biome, flat land, low danger, close to spawn) and then I FINALLY unlocked ||alien containment|| and figuring out where to put that turned into an entire thing w the base lol, I've been having so much fun designing it

Nope no tool but they only spawn in safe shallows (and in kelp forest wrecks) so just check boxes and wrecks in the safe shallows

If you need more fragments get laser cutter, but check what you can craft with the mod station in your recipe browser first, it has a little tab (some is auto unlocked and anything to be found won’t show)
