I just started playing yesterday and I knew about the dunes and was intentionally avoiding them, but a Reaper still silently snuck up to me on the very edge of them and scared the crap out of me. Luckily it got leashed and had to turn around after a couple of meters, but my heart was in my throat for those 3 seconds of chase time

Here’s a good way to tell where you are: if there’s spikes coming from the ground like rock formations, and the water isn’t greenish, then that’s dunes and not sparse reef, and, if it’s floor is past 200m, it’s most likely the dunes.

The place where the building became a cannon is the Enforcement Platform on the Mountain Island, which is where the Sunbeam (rescue ship) gets shot down. This cannon also shot down the Aurora in the opening sequence where you hop in the lifepod.

The Aurora is the giant ship that your escape pod ejected from that later blew up and is emitting radiation everywhere.
