Humans for now, but they're working on elves. So it's possibe for them to come around later, it's probably going to come either as the 3rd race or one of the last races (if they do more than humans and elves)

So from what I understand is, this isn't a typical MMO where you get your weapons go out into the world and kill 20 squirrels so you get a squirrel hat with +2 stat and a nut finding attribute attached to it. But there will be some sort of scripted combat you can do with friends? If this is true, how do you work around (for the lack of a better example) losing the fight because of a lack of mechanical skills (which IMO, isn't a bad thing, its just something to work towards in a game) with no "death" systems in the game?

Now I've been gaming MMOs since around 2004, i've tried the majority of them, and still play them to this day. So in seeing Palia's unique concept, it got me a little excited about the possibilities. I've always thought that having a "The Sims" type of MMO would be exciting, where you work to improving your home, sims, job, and so on but with an online community also actively doing the same. Then putting that into a fantasy setting would make it just a bit more enjoyable. So im curious on how server zoning is going to work, are we able to pop a house down anywhere and create communities where we as a player base or neighborhood want them or will there be specific plots and predetermined sizes? Following that, are we able to design the floor plans to our own homes like The Sims, or will it be somewhat like Skyrim home building, where you start small and pick and choose which additions you want, or perhaps like LotR:O homes where there's specific sizes and layouts and thats what you get?

I have more questions... but this seems long winded and ill leave it there.

In here it's mostly just other people who deep dive or have some knowledge on what the devs said. @copper juniper my guess is at max a month and a half until pre-alpha release. Alpha will either release later this year, or early next year (probably) and the game release will probably be a couple years after that point (24 or 25 are my guesses). There aren't any official release dates for anything yet, so it's just a waiting game. Monetization takes time to figure out and they're probably more focused on how their game is looking and functioning atm rather than worrying about monetization for the game (f2p, p2p, monthly sub) which probably won't matter for at least a few years in the future.

I just finished reading through the pinned doc (quite a bit of info there). The details on the player economy and inventory management are kind-of vague, but they seem to have given it some serious thought. One thing I really, really like is that the game seem designed not to appeal to two categories of players....those who solely want to PvP, and those who want to minmax their characters to make the most efficient killing machines. Plenty of games for those people - I want something different, and Palia is looking good in that respect.

Why did you choose the name "Palia" for the game?

While I can't say exactly why we settled on "Palia" over others (I wasn't part of that explicit process), I can say that finding a name for a game is really hard! From what I understand we had a long list of names, some lawyers had to check a buuunch of things to make sure there were no IP or copyright issues and just a few made it out of that process. You can't just pick the best name and go with it, unfortunately.

theres a matchmaking type system ingame, it was talked about a little bit, theyre using a machine learning system to bring people together. which means people who usually play together (or on a friends list maybe?) will most likely be matched together. the system learns what your preferences are, and does whats needed.

How will trading work in this game? Can you specialize in a specific profession (hunter / farmer, etc.)? Player economies though... As a gatherer/crafter/explorer type, I'd love to have a system that involved player run shops, regional resources, with some kind of searchable "listings" that you could discover the best deals in a region, etc. Something that'd encourage exploration, but at the same time having NPC run shops that would make it easier for the non-explorer types. It's ambitious and perhaps overly complicated. Sorry that's probably more a suggestion than question, but relevant to the conversation. 🙂

Currently our housing is instanced off in private spaces - there will be ways for players to show off their plots but it will not be so free [edit - as running by someone's home]. As such, there is no shortage of real estate for players to have access to housing.

This is from the pinned doc, and raises a lot of questions. How can Palia be an MMO without server selection? This reads like Animal Crossing or Terraria, where you host your world and invite others into it.

Hello! Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask/discuss, or even premature to ask already...
But one thing that I immediately thought of with how the players themselves would build the towns/cities in the world is how latecomers to the game will fare. When the game is first released, the world is open and unspoiled, no land is taken, no player-made cities to be seen. You can explore the world, find your own little cozy place and build your home there. But eventually, the world will run out of space(I assume), so new players will have nowhere to build their own houses and will be forced into one of the already existing villages/cities.

Any promises they throw out about mtx are nothin worth nothin, 1,2,3+ years down the line they can backtrack and people who are invested in the game wont do anything about it because theyre invested in in playing or financially invested already. Better to operate under the assumption that theyre gonna put in some scummy shit at some point, best case scenario youre pleasantly surprised if they dont. No one with an interest in selling you something is trustworthy or your friend.

Ok I just thought of something that might and might not be a valid question, but Im gonna ask anyway 😅
For the players that get into the pre-Alpha - do they get to only play the game as casual players? Or would they be allowed access to, let´s say more materials, so that they can advance through the content faster? It was said that there is quite a big chunk of the game for the testers to play in, but will there be enough time to really explore that chunk? Some players might not have as much time on their hands and wouldn´t be able to "farm" all the resources needed. Please don´t take this as If Im spoiled and want benefits or anything 😅 At this point we don´t even know who gets to play the pre-Alpha. I thought of this simply because Im one of the players that would rather build and explore, rather than farm resources and Im not sure If there will be enough time for people like me to enjoy building and other resource-expensive things.

In the past the tests I've been involved with have had optional NPCs to generate whatever you want or need, so players can make that decision themselves. But it all depends on what the devs are looking for feedback on. If they want feedback on the entire process of collecting, crafting, etc. being able to spawn materials defeats the point. But now I see WhoaNonstop is responding so I'll let him answer lol

Will there be long-term/grind able skills for the activities in the game? Something akin to RuneScape, like for example, you could level up your woodcutting on Palia and it would provide some small bonus.

It´s not skipping content. It´s skipping resource gathering. But then again, It was said that there is some sort of unique mechanic for resource gathering and respawning.

Well resource gathering can have bugs as well, it's part of the content ^^

Yeah, but the general idea is if our plan is to launch a game with resource gathering, we don't want to pull that out of any tests for convenience as we won't get the signal on if resource gathering is reasonable and at least somewhat fun.
